We started putting out map editions earlier so the profits would either be in a different fiscal year or a different quarter, since most people buy new editions soon after they come out.

RM's fiscal year probably turns over in June or July and so by putting the atlas out in April they're splitting their profits between two budget years. Having to do that is generally the sign of a failing business model.

I was thinking about blogging about my 2009 atlas and pointing out things that were out of date. Now I know why -- they pushed the atlas out too early.

I wonder if, besides the online maps like Mapquest, Google Maps, Yahoo maps and Live Maps, Rand MCNally might also be hit by some competition like the Canadian company MapArt? http://www.mapart.com/

On the other hand I can't wait to see the future editions of RMcN showing I-69 popping up at some Kentucky parkways ;-)

I also noticed, and I think this is new, that a few miles of what will be I-69 are marked as under construction just north of I-64 in Indiana.
