There is a compound in Union County NM, called Strong City, a bunch of renegade religoius zealots, hope that's not too close to your friend's place. The area from Clayton NM to Boise City OK, hasn't changed too much from the dust bowl days, a lot of abandoned ranch homes and barns. Sad but pretty scenery.
