Canada

having finished Norway, here are photos from Iceland – all as I prepare for my trip to Yukon and Alaska. Do we detect a theme here? Arctic Circle or bust!

Iceland will be done in about seven batches, just like Norway – even though I spent only four days in Iceland. And of those four days, here are … none of them.

This set of photos is just the flight between Minneapolis and Keflavík – nothing here from the ground quite yet, but here’s some clouds and some northern lights too!

Clouds at sunset. Not long after having taken off from Minneapolis, so I am figuring somewhere over Ontario.

Someone once said (it was me) that a truly great world city has a few traits… great parks, beautiful landmarks, progressive people, and too-low-capacity freeways. This is true of Montreal as well, but what it might lack in freeway capacity in makes up for in sheer numbers of them. Here is a little look at some of the views around the city centre, and as always, click the pictures for larger versions.

I love seeing “USA” as a control point. It would be neat to have more countries-as-control-points in my opinion.
“I-5 south, Sacramento/Mexico” – unlike what I saw further north in Quebec, the Trans-Canada highway is indeed signed here. Lets look at some other Montreal views…

Quebec City is the capital of Canada’s French-speaking Quebec province. The city celebrates its 400th anniversary next year, and has the only city walls in North America north of Mexico that still stand. But how to the freeways stack up? Well, they dont really “stack” but there are quite a few of them for a city of about 750,000.

Autoroute 73 forms the main route in from the south, and connects QC with Maine. I’m assuming the yellow tabs indicate exit only, as it is never expressly stated. Instead of the American A,B,C exits – these get the French O,E treatment for the cardinal directions. This view looks northbound just before the river, a little bit of the city’s skyline is showing to the right. The A20 is the Trans-Canada Highway, but its barely signed if at all through here.
