California 1 North - Ventura County

California 1 north
Northbound California 1 at Emma Wood Beach. This sign is at the foot of the off-ramp from northbound U.S. 101 onto northbound California 1 (Exit 72). The highway is actually heading due west at this point, and while this is part of the Pacific Coast Highway, signs refer to it as "West Pacific Coast Highway." Emma Wood State Beach is one of several state beaches along this portion of the California coastline. An original segment of U.S. 101, complete with seawall, is located within the campground portion of the state beach. Photo taken 06/01/02.
Northbound California 1 between Emma Wood Beach and Seacliff, parallel to the U.S. 101 freeway. Although it was sunny in the Simi Valley, coastal fog dominated the beaches on this day, which is a typical weather pattern for coastal California in June. Note the recreational vehicles that line the seawall to the left (south). Photo taken 06/01/02.
Northbound California 1 approaching Solimar Beach. This little section of California 1 is not shielded (with the exception of a couple of trailblazers near U.S. 101 and a guide sign in each direction indicating that this is California 1). This is merely a state-maintained stretch of old U.S. 101 that serves some state beaches just west of Ventura between Exit 72 (State Beaches) and Exit 78 (Seacliff). Photo taken 06/01/02.
Northbound California 1 at U.S. 101 at Exit 78 (Seacliff Exit). This signage is placed to indicate that California 1 rejoins the U.S. 101 freeway at this point. As is standard along this stretch of the coastline, California 1 is rarely cosigned with U.S. 101, and the signage for this on the mainline do not mention California 1 at all. Photos taken 06/01/02.
Northbound California 1 at U.S. 101 Exit 78. California 1 breaks off from U.S. 101 between Exits 72 (Emma Wood State Beach) and Exit 78 (Seacliff). This extant section of California 1 is not always clearly shown on state highway maps. California 1 subsumes to U.S. 101 from here until reaching Gaviota. Photo taken 06/01/02.
