California 2 East

Angeles Crest Highway east
In La Canada Flintridge, this California 2 trailblazer is posted on northbound Angeles Crest Highway prior to the Interstate 210 interchange after Foothill Boulevard (former California 118). Photos taken 03/25/07.
Traveling almost due north, eastbound Angeles Crest Highway intersects Interstate 210 in La Canada Flintridge. Upon reaching Interstate 210, the first right turn is an on-ramp to Interstate 210 east to Pasadena and San Bernardino. Traffic from California 2 joins Angeles Crest Highway after departing from Interstate 210 east. Photos taken 03/25/07.
California 2 east
Prior to crossing Interstate 210, this sign advises of regulations for parking in La Canada Flintridge. Despite the "welcome" sign, Angeles Crest Highway begins in La Canada Flintridge and continues north through the city. Ahead (after the Interstate 210 underpass), California 2 continues northeast. Photo taken 03/25/07.
The bridge separation sign between California 2 and Interstate 210 is identified as the Angeles Crest Highway Separation. Photos taken 03/25/07.
Northbound California 2 (Angeles Crest Highway) passes over Interstate 210. After crossing the freeway, Angeles Crest Highway will gain elevation as it ascends into the San Gabriel Mountains. Photo taken 03/25/07.
A loop ramp connects Angeles Crest Highway north with Interstate 210 west and California 2 south (west). Turn right here for Glendale Freeway south to Glendale and Los Angeles. Interstate 210 (Foothill Freeway) leads northwest to San Fernando and onward to Interstate 5 for points north. Photos taken 03/25/07.
This freeway entrance shield is posted for Interstate 210 west, but California 2 south (west) is omitted. Photos taken 03/25/07.
Continuing north, a mileage sign along California 2 (Angeles Crest Highway) east provides the distance to Mt. Wilson (19 miles), Palmdale (40 miles via Los Angeles County N-3 (Angeles Forest Highway)), and Big Pines (56 miles). From here, California 2 will leave the urban environs and become an exclusively mountain highway. Due to the winding nature of the highway through the San Gabriel Mountains, a yellow warning sign advises that certain trucks are restricted from the Angeles Crest Highway. Photos taken 03/25/07.
California 2 starts as a five-lane highway in La Canada Flintridge, but it will quickly narrow to a two-lane highway in the mountains. The highway will travel due north, then turn east near the base of the mountains to begin its ascent into the San Gabriel Mountains. Photo taken 03/25/07.

Curving to the east, California 2 crosses over Arch Canyon on this concrete arch bridge, which was built in 1930 and expanded to its current configuration in 1966. The date stamp is inscribed into the concrete below the highway, and a walk below the bridge reveals it. The set of pictures below not only show the underside of the bridge but also show the views from the bridge looking north and west. Photos taken 08/22/09.
Continuing uphill and leaving La Canada-Flintridge, California 2 enters the Angeles National Forest. The state route will travel along the hillsides to gain elevation and work its way up toward the crest. Here, another concrete arch bridge carries California 2 over Slide Canyon, about three miles after the Arch Canyon bridge. The Slide Canyon Bridge was built in 1931 as the Angeles Crest Highway was under construction. Photos taken 08/22/09.
This view looks east from the Slide Canyon Bridge on California 2 toward the San Gabriel Mountains. Below the highway is the Arroyo Seco, which originates northeast of here and flows southwest toward Pasadena. Photo taken 08/22/09.
