California 53
Routing
California 53 is the Clearlake Expressway, connecting California 29 in Lower Lake with California 20 near Clearlake Oaks. The expressway is generally four lanes wide, with two-lane sections bypassed through the late 1990s and 2000s. Old Highway 53 is the old alignment for California 53 through the city of Clearlake. The expressway bypasses the city center of Clearlake. Historically, California 53 used to extend south to Middletown, but it was truncated at Lower Lake when California 29 was rerouted off of Cobb Mountain and moved to the present alignment through Lower Lake.
