California 58 West - Bakersfield to Temblor Range

California 58 west
After leaving California 99, much of California 58 is industrial, but it quickly changes to residential/commercial. California 58 is now on its own; U.S. 466 did not follow California 58 west of Bakersfield. U.S. 466 instead continued north along with California 99 a bit further, until it turned west along the present alignment of California 46 toward Paso Robles. The next intersection along westbound is Fruitvale Avenue. Photo taken 01/21/04.
Much of the traffic along westbound California 58 is tied to the shopping amenities in west Bakersfield, including the Promenade, which is located at this intersection. approaching Van Buren Place. Photo taken 01/21/04.

Between Interstate 5 and the town of Buttonwillow, California 58 passes by this massive substation. Power lines enter the area from the north, southwest, south, and southeast, each feeding into the state's primary transmission corridor. Photos taken 01/21/04.
West of Buttonwillow, California 58 becomes a fairly quiet two-lane road, with rolling hills and low average daily traffic counts. This is one of the least traveled sections of California 58, which is a far cry from the freeway sections east of Bakersfield. Photo taken 01/21/04.
