Business California 60

A notable bridge relic is at Carlson Park, on the east bank of the Santa Ana River in the city of Riverside. In 1923, a Mission Revival style bridge (including the tower shown here) allowed vehicles to cross the often dry yet occasionally flooded Santa Ana River. In 1958, the bridge was replaced with a new bridge that is still in use today along Business California 60 (seen in the background of this picture). A bike trail parallels the river and connects to Carlson Park and nearby Mt. Rubidoux. Photo taken 06/24/07.

Routing

Business California 60 has two instances, one in Riverside and the other in Moreno Valley. Both follow former alignments of U.S. 60 before they were bypassed by the modern freeway alignment. Both instances of Business California 60 were also known as Business U.S. 60 before U.S. 60 was eliminated in California. The Riverside business route begins at California 60 Exit 43 and follows Mission Boulevard, Mission Inn Avenue, and University Avenue (returning to Interstate 215 and California 60 near the University of California at Riverside at Exit 32B). The Moreno Valley loop follows Sunnymead Boulevard between Exit 60 and Exit 62.

After crossing the Santa Ana River, Business California 60/Mission Boulevard enters the city of Riverside, the seat of Riverside County. Riverside is home to 255,166 people as of the 2000 Census. Like other Inland Empire cities, Riverside is growing (2006 Census estimate is a population of 293,761 people). Founded in 1870 by John North, Riverside was incorporated on October 11, 1883, consists of 78.4 square miles, and sits at an elevation of 860 feet above sea level. Photo taken 06/24/07.
Turn right here to visit Carlson Park at the foot of Mt. Rubidoux. Riverside grew around the burgeoning citrus industry, although the number of active citrus groves in Riverside are not as common as they once were. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and other citrus became the economic engine for Riverside; a grove is preserved as part of California Citrus State Historic Park. Citrus was first planted in 1871, and nearly half of the 500,000 citrus trees in existence in California in 1882 were located in Riverside. While orange groves have gradually yielded to development through the years, several citrus groves remain actively cultivated in Riverside today. The historic Mission Inn is a major tourist attraction in downtown Riverside; it started with the core Glenwood Cottage in 1876, and eventually it expanded to encompass an entire city block. Today, the inn remains in business (despite being closed and restored between 1985 and 1992) complete with overnight accommodations, restaurants, and related attractions. Photo taken 06/24/07.

Scenes Pertaining to Business California 60: Santa Ana River Bridge
This suite of pictures shows the approach and remnant infrastructure from the original U.S. 60 bridge crossing over the Santa Ana River near Riverside on Buena Vista Drive. Carlson Park, which is located on the south/east bank of the river at the foot of Mt. Rubidoux, includes the remains of the old bridge and mission-style approach towers. The multi-arched bridge (referred to as the "West Riverside Bridge" by some or as the "Raincross Bridge" in 1931 expansion plans) was originally built in 1923 and expanded in 1932 (as indicated by a concrete date stamp) and was later removed. A newer bridge now carries Business California 60/Mission Boulevard traffic over the Santa Ana River. Note the mission-style theme for the old bridge railing that remains intact. The parking lot is the original approach to the 1932 former bridge; an art-deco, blue and white "Riverside" sign is posted on the hill above the bridge approach. The current bridge for Business California 60 is shown in the last picture; it was built in 1958.1 Photos taken 06/24/07.
