California 99 - Madera County Northbound

Highway Guides

The California 99 photo guide is broken down into the following pages:

California 99 north
Northbound California 99 meets Exit 144, Avenue 7 and Road 33. Madera County uses a grid system to number its county-maintained routes. Avenues run east-west and roads run north-south. Avenue 12 is approximately 12 miles north of the southernmost point of the county (which is located along the Chowchilla Canal southeast of Firebaugh along the San Joaquin River). Since California 99 does not enter the county at its most southerly point, the first numbered route it encountered was Avenue 7. Photo taken 08/15/03.

The next exit along northbound is Exit 153B, Junction California 145. The routing of California 145 is shaped like a backward "7," with the kink in the route at Madera. California 145 leads south toward Ripperdam and east toward Millerton Lake. Photo taken 08/15/03.
Northbound California 99 meets Exit 153, Junction Southbound California 145 in Madera. California 145 leads southwest from Madera to connect to California 33 and Interstate 5 near Coalinga. Photo taken 05/20/03 by Pete Sison.

Northbound California 99 meets Exit 163, Avenue 22 1/2, Fairmead. This is another intersection that will be upgraded as part of a project to make California 99 freeway-standard. Photo taken 08/15/03.
As part of the effort to convert California 99 to freeway standards, one of the improvements will be to close off access at intersections such as this one, which is located just south of the California 152 interchange. As part of a proposed upgrade to this stretch of California 99, this intersection is proposed to be eliminated. A well-known hamburger joint that features a large orange is located at this intersection, and the business may be ruined with the closure of the intersection. Photo taken 08/15/03.
The next exit along northbound California 99 is Exit 166, Junction California 152 west (left exit). This interchange marks the eastern terminus of California 152. Photo taken 08/15/03.
California 152 is a major, east-west expressway connecting the Central Valley with the Central Coast, with connections to Gilroy and Watsonville via California 152 and Monterey via California 156. With interchanges at California 33 (eastern) and Interstate 5, much of the expressway between California 156 and California 99 is almost like a freeway. Photo taken 05/20/03 by Pete Sison.

Northbound California 99 meets Exit 170, Junction California 233 west in Chowchilla. California 233 leads southwest through Chowchilla to join California 152 a few miles west of here.
