Interstate 580 East - San Joaquin County

Interstate 580/William Elton Brown Freeway east
Path 15 and 66 power lines pass over Interstate 580 prior to Exit 67. Photos taken 07/06/04.
The next exit along eastbound Interstate 580 is Exit 67, Mountain House Parkway/Patterson Pass Road, one mile. Use Patterson Pass Road west to pass by a major electrical substation, then continue east over Patterson Pass to meet California 84 and Alameda County Route J-2 in Livermore. Photo taken 07/06/04.
Eastbound Interstate 580 reaches Exit 67, Mountain House Parkway/Patterson Pass Road. Photo taken 07/06/04.
This reassurance shield is found along eastbound Interstate 580 after Exit 67, Mountain House Parkway and prior to Exit 72, Corral Hollow Road. Photo taken 07/06/04.
The next exit along eastbound Interstate 580 is Exit 72, San Joaquin County J-2 (Corral Hollow Road), one mile. San Joaquin County J-2 extends west from Interstate 580 through Corral Hollow, crosses into Alameda County, and turns northwest into Livermore, following Livermore Avenue and Portola Avenue through Livermore to its end at Interstate 580 again. Photo taken 07/06/04.
Eastbound Interstate 580 reaches Exit 72, San Joaquin County J-2 (Corral Hollow Road). Use San Joaquin County J-2 northeast to Tracy; it then follows Tracy Boulevard across Union Island and onto Roberts Island. The county route ends at California 4 on Roberts Island (within the California Delta). Photo taken 07/06/04.
The next exit along eastbound Interstate 580 is Exit 76, California 132 east to Modesto and Tracy, with a connection to Chrisman Road, one mile. Photo taken 07/06/04.
California 132 begins its easterly journey here at Exit 76, connecting Interstate 580 with Modesto via a very busy two-lane highway. East of Modesto, California 132 passes through Empire, Waterford, and La Grange before ending at California 49 (Gold Country Highway) in Coulterville. Merced County J-20 continues east from Coulterville to connect with California 120 before entering Yosemite National Park. Photo taken 07/06/04.
Eastbound Interstate 580 reaches Exit 76, California 132 east to Vernalis and Modesto. Use Chrisman Road north to reach Tracy. The ramp to Chrisman Road is located after Interstate 580 traffic transitions onto California 132. Finally, use this exit to reach Interstate 5 northbound. Photo taken 07/06/04.
This mileage sign provides the distance to Fresno (via California 152) and the control city of Los Angeles. Of course, Interstate 580 not does reach either of these two cities. Photo taken 07/06/04.
After the California 132 interchange, this is the final Interstate 580 reassurance shield along eastbound. After this, Interstate 580 prepares to merge onto southbound Interstate 5. Photo taken 07/06/04.
Interstate 580 eastbound assumes characteristics of Interstate 5 in the Central Valley, with wide open spaces, limited development, and vast views of irrigated agricultural land. Services become a premium along Interstate 580/Interstate 5, and it is never wise to have less than a quarter tank of gas due to the lengthy spacing between exits along Interstate 5 as it passes through the western edge of the Central Valley, away from most cities and towns. Photo taken 07/06/04.
As Interstate 580 prepares to merge with Interstate 5, a Rest Area is located along Interstate 5 immediately after the two routes merge together. The overpass ahead carries southbound Interstate 5 traffic over Interstate 580 in anticipation of the merge; Interstate 5 will merge onto Interstate 580 from the right. Photo taken 07/06/04.
End Eastbound Interstate 580 shield assembly as it approaches Exit 78, Interstate 5 (the overpass in the distance). This marks the eastern terminus of Interstate 580. On some weekend days, Interstate 5 can be backed up due to high traffic volume. We've seen cars backed up on this overpass, here in the most rural areas of the state. This back-up is largely due to the fact that traffic from Interstate 580 assumes the two left lanes, while traffic from southbound Interstate 5 must merge left to remain on the freeway. Even so, after Thanksgiving 2003, southbound Interstate 5 was jammed with traffic from here all the way to the Grapevine with relatively few areas of limited traffic. Photos taken 07/06/04.
The left lanes of eastbound Interstate 580 prepare to merge with southbound Interstate 5. Photo taken 07/06/04.
Eastbound Interstate 580 ends as it merges with southbound Interstate 5. From here, Interstate 5 continues south along the Westside Highway toward Los Angeles, with connections to most Central Valley cities via the state highway network. To Fresno, follow Interstate 5 south to California 152 east; for Bakersfield, follow Interstate 5 south to California 46 east. Photo taken 07/06/04.
