A short distance to the north of the Maryland state line on Delaware 1 (Ocean Boulevard) northbound is the intersection of Delaware 20 & 54's eastern terminus. The tandem connect Delaware 1 and the community of Fenwick Island with interior Sussex County via a causeway between Ocean Boulevard and Bayville. The two routes share 3.9 miles of pavement before parting ways near West Fenwick. Delaware 54 is a Maryland numbering convention stemming from the Maryland 54 east-west highway along the state line near Delmar and the southwest corner of the state. Sign bridge on northbound Delaware 1 at the westbound beginning of Delaware 24 (John Williams Highway) south of Five Points. This area of Delaware 1 has grown tremendously since the mid 1980s with commercial frontage associated with the growing coastal area. Delaware 1 carries six lanes between Rehoboth Beach and Five Points (Junction U.S. 9). The control point of Oak Orchard refers to the area along Indian River Bay at the southern terminus of Delaware 5. Just north of the Williams and Cedar Neck Road intersection on Delaware 1 southeast of Milford is the beginning of a three mile expressway. Known as the Milford Bypass, Delaware 1 bypasses the town to the east with a three interchanges. The first junction is a partial "Y" interchange with Delaware 1 Business (Rehoboth Boulevard). The only Business route of Delaware 1 at present is the Milford route of Rehoboth Boulevard, Walnut Street, and Dupont Boulevard (U.S. 113). Delaware 1 Business follows original Delaware 14 along Rehoboth Boulevard southward from Front Street. Approaching the signalized intersection with Bowers Beach Road at the community of Little Heaven. Bowers Beach Road spurs east from Delaware 1 (Bay Road) to Bowers Beach along Delaware Bay. Construction is planned for 2010 and beyond to remove the intersection with Bowers Beach Road and replace it with an overpass. Traffic signals only govern the movements of left-hand turns from Delaware 1 (Bay Road) northbound onto Clapham Road (former U.S. 113 Alternate) at Little Heaven. Clapham Road used to carry U.S. 113 Alternate northwest to Main Street in Magnolia; State Street (old U.S. 113 Alternate) continues northward from Main Street to Rising Sun and south Dover. The northbound beginning of Delaware 9 (Bayside Drive) departs Delaware 1 (Bay Road) northbound at the south extend of Dover A.F.B. The state route straddles the coastal areas from Dover northward to New Castle, providing a somewhat scenic alternative to the growingly busy Delaware 1 and U.S. 13 to the west.
