Highway guide for Delaware 1 northbound from St. Georges to Churchman's Crossing.
U.S. 13 joins the SR 1 Turnpike between Exits 152 (Wrangle Hill) and 156 (Tybouts Corner). The two mile stretch of the six-lane freeway overtakes the original Dupont Highway alignment between the Red Lion Creek and Exit 156 trumpet interchange. A mileage sign indicates that Wilmington is 12 miles and the Delaware Memorial Bridge is 11 miles north of Exit 152. The sign posted within the median mentions that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintenance of Delaware 1 ends. Photo taken 08/10/04. |
Auxiliary guide sign for Interstate 95 bound motorists advising traffic to remain on Delaware 1 for the Delaware Turnpike, Wilmington, and Baltimore. With that stated, many drivers remain on U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) northbound to the Farnhurst interchange with Interstate 295 instead. Once the Delaware 1 & Interstate 95 cloverleaf interchange at Churchman's Crossing is upgraded, more drivers will likely choose Delaware 1 over U.S. 13 to Interstate 95. Photo taken 08/10/04. |
Attached to the School House Road or Lower Twin Lane over crossing is the one-mile diagrammatical sign for the upcoming Exit 156 split of U.S. 13 north from Delaware 1. Signage directs Delaware Memorial Bridge and Interstate 295 bound traffic onto the Dupont Highway northward instead of Delaware 1 to Interstate 95 to Interstate 295. Photo taken 08/10/04. |
Nearing the Red Lion Creek on U.S. 13 & Delaware 1 northbound one half mile south of the Exit 156 trumpet interchange. U.S. 13 merges with U.S. 40 3.5 miles to the north at State Road. From there the tandem travels four miles to Farnhurst and junction Interstate 295. Delaware 1 intersects U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) in two miles at Bear (pop. 17,593). Photo taken 08/10/04. |

Winter time view of the 0.50-mile diagrammatical overhead for the U.S. 13 & Delaware 1 northbound split. The use of "NJ-NY" as a control point for U.S. 13 refers to Interstate 295 and the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Photo taken by Adam Froehlig (02/13/04). |
U.S. 13 returns to its Dupont Highway alignment at Tybouts Corner as Delaware 1 veers northward to Bear and Christiana. Delaware 71 ties into U.S. 13 within the pervasive trumpet interchange from the hamlet of Red Lion. Both U.S. 13 and Delaware 1 maintain four overall lanes north of the Tybouts Corner partitioning. Photo taken 08/10/04. |
The one-mile guide sign for Exit 160 (U.S. 40) is posted along Delaware 1 northbound as it leaves the U.S. 13 (Exit 156) trumpet interchange. U.S. 40 represents a heavily developed suburban corridor with both numerous subdivisions and shopping plazas. With that stated, the federal highway has lost its usefulness as a through route between Bear and Elkton, Maryland. Photo taken 08/10/04. |
Traffic from U.S. 13 southbound onto Delaware 1 northbound utilizes an on-ramp via adjacent Bear Tybouts Road. The 0.50-mile guide sign for U.S. 40 resides just north of the merge of that ramp. Known as the Pulaski Highway, U.S. 40 exists as a four to six lane divided highway between the Maryland state line and junction U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) at State Road. Photo taken 08/10/04. |
A partial-cloverleaf interchange facilitates the movements between Delaware 1 and U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) at Exit 160. U.S. 40 bisects the heart of Bear nearby at its intersection with Delaware 7 (Bear Christiana Road). The intersection holds the dubious distinction as Delaware's most dangerous based upon the high accident rate it entails. Overlays exist on all Exit 160 signs covering up tabs for Exit 96. Photo taken 08/10/04. |
Utilizing the Exit 160 off-ramp to U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway). The Pulaski Highway is the name for all of U.S. 40 between the city of Baltimore, Maryland and the merge with U.S. 13 at State Road. Large guide signs are in place for U.S. 40 on both off-ramps of Delaware 1. However the westbound sign for Elkton was missing at the time of this photograph. Photo taken 08/10/04. |
Numerous traffic lights govern the end of the Exit 160 off-ramp for U.S. 40 westbound to Bear, Glasgow (pop. 12,840), and Elkton. The one-lane turn lane from U.S. 40 west onto Delaware 1 north and u-turn lane for U.S. 40 east each receive three left-turn signals. Note the error Delaware 40 shield posted for U.S. 40 west. Photo taken 08/10/04. |

Delaware 1 northbound reassurance shield posted after the partial cloverleaf interchange with U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway). The segment of Delaware 1 between U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) and Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) is the oldest of the turnpike system. The four lane freeway opened to traffic in 1991. Photo taken 03/27/04. |
A recently (2004) replaced guide sign for Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) on Delaware 1 northbound. Delaware 273 is a heavily traveled commuter route between the city of Newark and town of New Castle. The four lane divided highway saw widening in the mid 1990s to increase the capacity between Newark and Interstate 95 and Delaware 1 and U.S. 13 & 40 (Dupont Highway). Photo taken 03/27/04. |
Nearing the Exit 162 diamond interchange of Delaware 273 (Christiana Road). Delaware 273 locally serves the village of Christiana via connections with Delaware 7 and Old Baltimore Pike. Until 1987, Delaware 273 shared a short overlap with Delaware 7 into Christiana itself. A four lane divided bypass (Christiana Bypass) realigned Delaware 273 between Delaware 7 and Interstate 95. Photo taken 04/03/04. |
Traffic to Delaware 273 departs Delaware 1 northbound. Until April of 1993, all traffic on Delaware 1 was forced to use this off-ramp as the connection between here and Delaware 7 adjacent to the Christiana Mall was yet to open. The upcoming mile of freeway took longer to complete due to area wetlands. Photo taken 04/03/04. |
Junction Delaware 273 shield assembly posted on the Exit 162 northbound off-ramp from Delaware 1. Delaware 273 travels west from Exit 162 to Newark and Cecil County, Maryland and east of Delaware 1 to Hare's Corner and New Castle. Photo taken 12/21/04. |
Delaware 7 trailblazer posted on the Exit 162 off-ramp of Delaware 1 north. Delaware 7 parallels Delaware 1 closely between U.S. 40 at Bear and Delaware 273 near Christiana. The state highway enters Christiana to the northwest before merging with Delaware 1 at the Christiana Mall (Exit 164). Delaware 273 intersects Delaware 7 west of the Exit 162 diamond interchange. Photo taken 12/21/04. |
The 0.50-mile guide sign for Delaware 7 south and Mall Road is posted above the Delaware 273 under crossing. The upcoming Exit 164 interchange sees the merging of Delaware 7 northbound onto the final 1.50 miles of Delaware 1. Delaware 7 saw realignment in 1992 to tie into a folded cloverleaf interchange with Delaware 1 via a new access road between Christiana-Stanton Road (original Delaware 7) and Mall Road (for the Christiana Mall). Photo taken 04/03/04. |
A third northbound auxiliary lane adds to Delaware 1 to deposit merging traffic from Delaware 273. The lane quickly becomes the off-ramp for Delaware 7 and Mall Road in one half mile. For whatever reason this overhead was removed in 1997 and replaced in 1988. When comparing the guide sign to other SR 1 Turnpike panels one will notice that the Exit 164 sign here does not have rounded corners. Older Delaware signing practices allowed for the removal of the area outside of the "white border". Newer signs however adhere to the standards used by the adjacent states of New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania and do not cut the area outside of the rounded borders. Photo taken 12/18/04. |
Delaware 1 northbound at the Exit 164 off-ramp to Delaware 7 and Mall Road. Contrary to what the sign displays, there is no official "Christiana Mall Road", rather Christiana and Mall Road refer to two separate entities. The aforementioned wetlands here mandated a few short bridges for the Delaware 1 mainline and Exit 164 ramps. The Delaware 1 & 7 pull-through panel to the left originally displayed "Metroform" as the destination. In 1999 "Metroform" was officially renamed "Churchman's Crossing". The name applies to a geographical area bounded by Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway), Delaware 273 (Christiana Road), Interstate 95 (Delaware Turnpike), and Delaware 7 (Stanton Christiana Road). Photo taken 12/18/04. |
Delaware 1 and 7 trailblazers posted toward the end of the Exit 164 northbound off-ramp to Stanton-Christiana Road (Delaware 7). Delaware 7 southbound departs Delaware 1 for the village of Christiana to the southwest. Traffic continuing straight through the upcoming intersection enters Mall Road for the Christiana Mall. Photo taken 12/18/04. |
Attached to the Delaware 7 overpass on Delaware 1 northbound is the first guide sign for the upcoming Exit 165B/A cloverleaf interchange. For some reason or another the Exit number suffix convention for Exit 165 on Delaware 1 & 7 is counter intuitive. In other words Exit 165B comes first in both directions rather than first for southbound and second for northbound. The overhead pictured here is a 2000s replacement of the original 1993 assembly. Photo taken 04/03/04. |
The stretch of Delaware 1 & 7 between Exit 164 and Interstate 95 is one of the most congested stretches of freeway in the state of Delaware. Traffic merging from the Christiana Mall from the right interacts with the heavily crowded two northbound lanes in close proximity to the Exit 165B off-ramp to Interstate 95 northbound. The movements between Delaware 1 north and Interstate 95 north and Interstate 95 south and Delaware 1 south are by far the busiest at the upcoming cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 12/18/04. |
Pictured here is the original Mall Road overpass for the Christiana Mall and Delaware 7. A partial interchange once shuttled traffic between Stanton Christiana Road (Delaware 7) and the 1980 opened mall. The junction featured a tight loop ramp from Delaware 7 south onto Mall Road east. The Mall Road ramp to Delaware 7 featured a traffic light adjacent to the loop. The southbound Exit 164A loop ramp is a modified version of the original connection. The Mall Road overpass here however will be removed and rebuilt in conjunction with the upcoming Delaware 1 & Interstate 95 interchange reconstruction project. Attached to the overpass is the only original guide sign for Interstate 95 remaining from the interchange construction of 1979/80. Photo taken 12/18/04. |
The Tybout's Corner to Christiana section of Delaware 1 was the only to ever feature mile based exit numbers. When the Smyrna-Dover Bypass portion opened in 1993, it was decided to go ahead and sign the SR 1 Turnpike in metric units. A conversion of the northernmost exit numbers to kilometer based measurements occurred in 1997. Pictured here is the original Exit 101B/A exit tabs and the former Delaware 1 end sign. Note the missing Interstate 495 trailblazer as well. Interstate 495 shields did not appear on Exit 101B/165B related guide signs until the 2000s. Photo taken 03/95. |

The updated overhead for Exit 165B on Delaware 1 & 7 northbound at Interstate 95 north. The configuration here will drastically change in the next five years. Deldot agreed in May of 2004 to redesign the failing Delaware 1 & 7 interchange with Interstate 95. The three year project entails several elements including the segregation of the Christiana Mall and Delaware 1 & 7 northbound on-ramps to Interstate 95, the expansion of the current one lane scenario from Delaware 1 to Interstate 95 to two, and the creation of a new two lane high speed flyover to carry Interstate 95 southbound motorists onto Delaware 1 & 7 south among other changes. Photo taken 12/18/04. |
A new overhead for Interstate 95 southbound (Exit 165A) saw installation in 2000 to coincide with the completion of the Exit 166 interchange with Delaware 58. Deldot however failed to remove the previous guide sign posted at street level to the right. Traffic entering Interstate 95 southbound must contend with motorists destined for Delaware 1 & 7 southbound via a congested collector/distributor lane above. Photo taken 12/18/04. |
| Delaware 1 & 7 northbound depart the Interstate 95 cloverleaf interchange and enter the Exit 166 junction with Delaware 58 (Churchman's Road). The auxiliary lane gained from the Interstate 95 north to Delaware 1 & 7 northbound ramp becomes exit-only for Churchman's Road. The Delaware 1 & 7 overpass over Delaware 58 was complete by late 1998. Photo taken 12/18/04.

| A cloverleaf ramp facilitates the movements from Delaware 1 & 7 northbound onto Delaware 58 (Churchman's Road). What was previous a heavily congested intersection was upgraded to a partial-cloverleaf interchange between 1996 and 1999. Upon the opening of this interchange Delaware 1 saw extension from just south of Interstate 95 to this location. Photo taken 12/18/04.
