The Guide to Delaware State Route 1 Southbound

Dover to Ocean City, Maryland

Highway Guide for Delaware 1 southbound between the SR 1 Turnpike and Ocean City, Maryland.

Delaware 1 Southbound
Delaware 1 (Bay Road) leaves the Dover A.F.B. area and intersects the southern terminus of Delaware 9 (Bayside Drive) and Kitts Hummock Road. Delaware 9 is regarded as the coastal scenic route for the state of Delaware between Dover and Delaware City. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Delaware 9 north travels to Little Creek east of Dover A.F.B. Kitts Hummock Road leaves here to Kitts Hummock along the Delaware River. Trucks bound for Dover A.F.B. must continue south another three miles in lieu of making a u-turn at Delaware 9. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Southbound at the northbound beginning of Delaware 9 (Bayside Drive). The two lane roadway skirts through many small villages, wetlands, and wildlife refuges along the Delaware River. Points of Interest to the east include the Air Mobility Museum and John Dickinson Plantation. Photo taken 04/13/04.
Delaware 1 & U.S. 113 reassurance assembly posted south of the Delaware 9 & Kitts Hummock Road intersection. U.S. 113 signs were vastly in tact two months after the announcement of truncation but are all removed by 2007. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Mileage sign listing the distances to Milford (junction U.S. 113), Georgetown (via U.S. 113), and Rehoboth Beach along Delaware 1 (Bay Road) south after Delaware 9. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Delaware 1 leaves the Dover area and spans the St. Jones River ahead of Barkers Landing. The St. Jones River flows southeast a short distance to the Delaware Bay at Bowers Beach. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Barkers Landing Road ties into Delaware 1 (Bay Road) at the south end of the St. Jones River bridge. Barkers Landing Road stems southwest from Barkers Landing to Walnut Street in Magnolia. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Continuing south, Delaware 1 (Bay Road) continues through rural and marshlands through to Little Heaven. Commercial development is at a minimum between Dover and Milfred. Photo taken 08/05/07.

The intersection of Delaware 1 and Mulberrie Point Road at Little Heaven. Mulberrie Point Road acts as the connector between Delaware 1 and Clapham Road northbound (former U.S. 113 Alternate). The 2004 truncation of U.S. 113 orphaned U.S. 113 Alternate from its parent. Thus Deldot also announced that the designation was terminated. Photo taken by Adam Froehlig (04/04/04).
Delaware 1 (Bay Road) southbound at the connector road to Clapham Road (former U.S. 113 Alternate) northbound. Note the removal of U.S. 113 shields. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Traffic light at the historic south end of U.S. 113 Alternate (Clapham Road) on Delaware 1. Traffic from northbound to Clapham Road crosses the southbound lanes of Delaware 1 here. The alignment of U.S. 113 Alternate between Little Heaven and Dover constitutes the historic routing of U.S. 113. Photo taken 04/13/04.
Southbound mileage sign posted along Delaware 1 (Bay Road) after the merge with Clapham Road (old U.S. 113 Alternate). Photo taken 08/05/07.
Nearing the signalized intersection with Bowers Beach Road along Delaware 1 (Bay Road) south. Southbound trucks bound for the truck gate of Dover A.F.B. are directed to make a U-turn at this intersection for the return trek northward to Delaware 1 Exit 92. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Leaving the village of Little Heaven at the Bowers Beach Road intersection on Delaware 1 south. Bowers Beach Road spurs eastward from Delaware 1 to Bowers Beach on Delaware Bay. Work planned by DelDOT may begin in 2010 on an upgrade of Delaware 1 through the Little Heaven vicinity that includes a grade separation between Bowers Beach Road and Bay Road. Included in the project is the removal of all at-grade intersections from Mulberrie Point Road southward to Barratts Chapel Road and installation of local frontage roads to accommodate private driveways and existing cross roads. Ramps will tie in the new frontage roads to the limited-access Delaware 1. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Delaware 1 & U.S. 113 reassurance shields posted south of the Bowers Beach Road intersection at Little Heaven and the updated shield assembly post-U.S. 113 truncation. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Nearing the junction of Frederica Road on Delaware 1 southbound. Frederica Road carries Delaware 12 westward from Delaware 1 into Frederica itself. The state highway from there migrates westward to Felton and junction U.S. 13 before crossing into the state of Maryland as Maryland 314. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Delaware 1 southbound at the eastern terminus of Delaware 12 (Frederica Road). The east-west highway serves Killens Pond State Park five miles to the southwest. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Delaware 1 reassurance marker posted south of the intersection with Delaware 12 (Frederica Road). Bay Road spans the Murderkill River in the background. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Frederica Road returns to end at Delaware 1 south of town. A Delaware 12 trailblazer is posted for motorists wishing to access the highway via Frederica Road northbound. Frederica Road itself constitutes the original U.S. 113 alignment. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Two lanes of concrete push southward toward Milford on Delaware 1. Ahead is the Tub Mill Pond road intersection. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.

Milford Map - AARoads

Delaware 1 bypasses Milford to the east; Delaware 1 Business travels east of downtown along Rehoboth Boulevard. U.S. 113 serves the commercial strip of Milford west of downtown; downtown centers around the Mispillion River along Delaware 14 and 36. Milford highway map created by Kelly Krapp (October 2007).

1.5 miles north of the U.S. 113 and Delaware 1 split along Bay Road southbound. Since February 2004, the forthcoming partition represents the southbound beginning of U.S. 113. Both routes serve coastal communities: Delaware 1 travels directly to Rehoboth and Dewey Beaches; U.S. 113 remains inland but serves Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, and Ocean City, Maryland via connections with Delaware 26, Delaware 20 & 54, and Maryland 90 (Ocean City Expressway) via Maryland 589. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Delaware 1 southbound at the intersection with Thompsonville Road. At present at traffic signal governs traffic movements between the two roadways. However, Deldot plans for a folded-diamond interchange between the two highways. Construction may begin in the fall of 2010. See the SR 1 Thompsonville Interchange site on Deldot.org for details. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Sign replacements posted after the Thompsonville Road intersection of Delaware 1 (Bay Road) south. A series of signs continue to direct motorists bound for coastal destinations such as Bethany Beach, Fenwick Island, Ocean City, Maryland, and Assateague Island, Maryland on inland U.S. 113 in lieu of the congested Delaware 1 between Five Points and Dewey Beach. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
The original shore points signs were removed and replaced with a U.S. 113 & Delaware 1 Business guide sign listing Milford and the Sussex County seat of Georgetown. U.S. 113 crosses paths with U.S. 9 at Georgetown midway between Milford and the Maryland state line. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Continuing toward the split of U.S. 113 (DuPont Boulevard) south and Delaware 1 (Coastal Highway) south at Milford, signs continue to advise motorists of the beach destination preference of U.S. 113 for points south. Milford is the only incorporated city in Delaware to span two counties. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Older sign bridge for the U.S. 113 & Delaware 1 split on southbound. Delaware 1 Business also begins here and follows U.S. 113 (Dupont Boulevard) for 0.40 miles to Walnut Street. The Business counterpart of Delaware 1 follows Walnut Street and Rehoboth Boulevard along the original Delaware 14 alignment through the city of Milford. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Replaced guide signs 0.25 miles ahead of the U.S. 113 and Delaware 1 split, a partial "Y" interchange handles the movements between the two roadways. The placard on the bottom of the original U.S. 113 panel displayed Fenwick Island before being overlaid with S. Shore Points. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
The southbound beginning of U.S. 113 departs with Delaware 1 Business for Dupont Boulevard. The tandem quickly split at Walnut Street north of town. U.S. 113 stays to the west of the Milford central business district serving western reaches of the developed area. The federal highway reaches Georgetown in 18 miles. Out of view to the right is original U.S. 113, a two-lane concrete roadway serving a handful of residences. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
U.S. 113 sign posted at the gore point between the southbound split with Delaware 1. U.S. 113 carries four lanes of overall travel between Milford and the Maryland state line. Delaware 1 also carries four lanes southward to Ocean City, Maryland. Photo taken 08/05/07.
The split of U.S. 113 & Delaware 1 Business from Delaware 1 ushers in the beginning of the Milford Bypass expressway. The four lane highway features three overall interchanges and two at-grade intersections. Pictured here is the first Delaware 1 reassurance shield of the bypass and the city limits sign for Milford. Photo taken 08/05/07.
The first at-grade intersection of the Milford Bypass is with NE 10th Street. 10th Street travels west to junction U.S. 113 and Delaware 1 Business at their split and Milford High School; eastbound serves the Woods Haven community before ending at New Wharf Road. Photo taken 08/05/07.
South of 10th Street, Delaware 1 (Coastal Highway) intersects the eastern terminus of Delaware 14 (Front Street) and New Wharf Road. New Wharf Road loops east from Delaware 1 & 14 to New Wharf along Swan Creek and northwest back to Delaware 1 (Bay Road) at Tubmill Pond. Photo taken 04/13/04.
Southbound Delaware 1 at Delaware 14 (Front Street) and New Wharf Road northeast of Milford. Delaware 14 used to continue southward along what is now Delaware 1 to Rehoboth Beach and Ocean City, Maryland. In the 1970s Delaware 14 saw truncation to Milford and Delaware 1 was born. The state highway remains on an east-west alignment between the Maryland state line, Harrington (junction U.S. 13) and Milford. Photo taken 04/13/04.
Continuing southward on the Milford Bypass beyond the Delaware 14 eastern terminus. Photo taken 04/13/04.
The only full interchange on the Milford Bypass is that of the Delaware 36 (Cedar Beach Road) diamond interchange. Delaware 36 links the city of Milford with Slaughter Beach on the Delaware Bay to the east and follows Front Street through downtown Milford to the west. New signs were installed by 2007 for Delaware 36. Photo taken 08/05/07.
The Delaware 36 off-ramp departs Delaware 1 southbound at the Mispillion River crossing. The waterway represents the dividing line between Kent and Sussex Counties between Milford and Delaware Bay. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
A diamond interchange facilitates the movements between Delaware 1 (Coastal Highway) and Delaware 36 (Cedar Beach Road). The state highway straddles the northern reaches of Sussex County between Slaughter Beach, Milford, Greenwood (junction U.S. 13) and Scotts Corner (junction Delaware 404). Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
An Interstate style mileage sign, and its replacement, posted after Delaware 36 is the first to identify Ocean City as a control point for Delaware 1. In the background is the partial "Y" interchange that returns Delaware 1 Business (Rehoboth Boulevard) onto Delaware 1. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Junction Delaware 30 shield posted on Delaware 1 southbound at the Delaware 1 Business northbound overpass. Delaware 30 originally ended at Delaware 1 but now follows a frontage road to the west of the Milford Bypass between Wilkins Road and Rehoboth Boulevard. Photo taken 08/05/07.
The Milford Bypass expressway ends at the intersection with Wilkins and Cedar Neck Roads. Wilkins Road connects Delaware 1 with adjacent Delaware 30 (Cedar Creek Road) to the west. Delaware 30 sinks southward from Milford through interior Sussex County to Millsboro (junction U.S. 113) and Gumboro near the state line before turning west toward U.S. 13 via Dorthy Road. The east-west extension of Delaware 30 came into existence around 1980. Photo taken 04/13/04.
Delaware 1 (Coastal Highway) continues south from Wilkins Road to Johnson and Sharps Roads and Argos Corner over the next three miles. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Southbound Delaware 1 at the northern terminus of Delaware 5 (Union Road). The state highway veers southward from Delaware 1 towards the city of Milton (junction Delaware 16). The state highway continues from there to Oak Orchard along the Indian River Bay. Photo by Adam Froehlig 02/18/02.
Approaching the eastern terminus of Delaware 16 (Broadkill Road) on Delaware 1 southbound. The state highway enters the state with Maryland 404 as Maryland 16 west of Greenwood. From there Delaware 16 passes through Greenwood, Ellendale, and Milton before culminating at Delaware 1. Broadkill Road continues east of Delaware 1 to Broadkill Beach on Delaware Bay. Photo by Adam Froehlig 02/18/02.
Delaware 1 southbound at Five Points. The name Five Points is derived from the five-way intersection created by the confluence of Delaware 1, U.S. 9, Delaware 404, U.S. 9 Business, Delaware 23, and Delaware 1D (Beaver Dam Road). The junction composes the joint termini of Delaware 23 (north), Delaware 1D (north), and Delaware 404 (east). U.S. 9 north & Delaware 404 east enter Five Points by way of Georgetown from the west. U.S. 9 than turns southward for a short overlap on Delaware 1 between Five Points and the Kings Highway. Former U.S. 9 between Five Points and Lewes stems from the north as U.S. 9 Business. Delaware 1D & 23 depart Five Points southward via Beaver Dam Road and split nearby Delaware 1D turns southeasterly along Plantation Road to Midway. Photo by Adam Froehlig 02/18/02.
Approaching the split of Delaware 1A (Rehoboth Avenue) on Delaware 1 southbound at Hebron Road. Delaware 1A provides a loop into the heart of Rehoboth Beach itself as Delaware 1 continues southeasterly toward Dewey Beach. Delaware 1A provides access to the Henlopen Acres community by way of 1st Street, Lake Avenue, and Surf Avenue. Delaware 1B provides a second route into Rehoboth Beach from Delaware 1 further south. Photo by Adam Froehlig 02/18/02.
Southbound Delaware 1 at the east end of Delaware 26 (Garfield Parkway). Delaware 26 composes one of two inland routes from the Delaware Atlantic Coastline to U.S. 113 and points west of Indian River and Rehoboth Bays. Photo by Adam Froehlig 02/18/02.
