The Guide to Delaware 2 Eastbound in Delaware

Eastbound

Delaware 2 Eastbound
City of Newark
Entering the Diamond State by way of Maryland 279 (Elkton Road) through west Newark. The four-lane arterial becomes concrete between the state line and Delaware Avenue. Ahead is a 2000 installed mast arm traffic light assembly for McIntire Drive and an industrial park. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Eastbound Delaware 2 (Elkton Road) at the western terminus of Delaware 4 and merge with Delaware 896 (Christina Parkway). Delaware 2 turns eastward along Christina Parkway with Delaware 4 east & 896 southbound to bypass central Newark. Elkton Road continues eastward into downtown carrying Delaware 2 Business & 896. Note the error referencing Delaware 2 Business east as north and Delaware 896 north as east. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Delaware 896 departs the overlap with Delaware 2 & 4 for South College Avenue. East of there Delaware 2 & 4 become Chestnut Hill Road. Pictured here is the four-lane divided highway and a DART bus ramp for a Park and Ride lot. Photo taken 04/17/04.
Chestnut Hill Road eastbound at Argyle Road, the entrance to Robscott Manor. This intersection was slated to become a diamond interchange in the 1970s as part of the Newark Beltway plan. Argyle Road would tie into a north-south road serving the athletic facilities of the University of Delaware to the north. Staunch opposition from residents curtailed the plan from ever coming to fruition and a traffic signal resides at the intersection today. Photo taken 04/17/04.

Delaware 2 is poorly signed along Chestnut Hill Road between Delaware 896 (South College Avenue) and Delaware 72 (South Chapel Street). The state route is signed at the intersecting state routes however. Between Argyle Road and South Chapel Street is a crossing of a Norfolk-Southern Railroad branch. Photo taken 04/17/04.
County of New Castle
Delaware 2 & 4 eastbound split at junction Delaware 72 (South Chapel Street) just outside the Newark city limits. Delaware 2 & 72 overlap 2.8 miles along South Chapel Street, Library Avenue, and Kirkwood Highway northward through east Newark. Photo taken 04/17/04.
Delaware 72 southbound intersects Old Baltimore Pike in 1.4 miles and U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) in four miles. The state route arcs from there southeast to Wrangle Hill and Delaware City. Delaware 4 (Chestnut Hill Road) continues eastward to Ogletown and Stanton. Photo taken 04/17/04.
City of Newark
Delaware 2 east & 72 northbound travel Library Avenue over the AMTRAK Northeast corridor into the College Square area of east Newark. The two-lane highway expands to four overall lanes between Wyoming Road and the junction with West Main Street (Delaware 2 Business & 273). Delaware Avenue carries Delaware 2 Business & 273 eastbound to Delaware 2 & 72 at the upcoming intersection. Photo taken 08/31/04.
Library Avenue northbound at the eastern terminus of Delaware 2 Business (Delaware Avenue) and merge with Delaware 273 east. An entrance to the College Square Shopping Center ties into the intersection from the right. Delaware Avenue itself is eastbound only. Photo taken 03/27/04.
The only sign bridge in all of Newark resides on Delaware 2-273 east & 72 north (Library Avenue) ahead of the West Main Street/Newark Christiana Road intersection. The assembly saw installation in 1980 to guide motorists through the upcoming junction where Delaware 273 eastbound splits from Delaware 2 & 72 to Ogletown. A greenout over "WEST" above the Delaware 2 shield displays "BUSINESS" for when Delaware 2 relocated around 1990. Photo taken 03/28/04.
During the Summer of 2004 the left-hand panel of the sign bridge displayed on Delaware 2-72-273 (Library Avenue) northbound was replaced. The new sign includes a trailblazer for the Newark Public Library and a Delaware 2 shield with Highway Gothic Series E Font. Photo taken 08/31/04.
Mast arm assemblies govern the movements between Delaware 2, 2 Business, 72, and 273. Delaware 2 Business begins to the left along East Main Street with Delaware 273 west. Delaware 2 & 72 continue northward onto the Robert Kirkwood Highway ahead. To the Delaware 273 travels the four-lane Newark Christiana Road to Ogletown, Interstate 95, and Christiana. Photo taken 03/27/04.
Kirkwood Highway passes underneath the CSX Railroad between Main Street and the intersection of Cleveland and Woodlawn Avenues. Cleveland Avenue provides a third east-west route between west Newark and Delaware 2 & 72 parallel to the railroad line. Woodlawn Avenue travels eastward into a residential area to the right. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Nearing the White Clay Creek crossing on Delaware 2 east & 72 north (Kirkwood Highway) at Anna Way. A Delaware 2 westbound sign is posted for Dillwyn Road and an adjacent u-turn lane for trucks that are unable to make the left-hand turn from Kirkwood Highway westbound onto Cleveland Avenue. Photo taken 04/24/04.
Delaware 2 east & 72 north reassurance shield posted near the Dillwyn Road intersection and White Clay Creek crossing. The pair depart the Newark city limits east of the creek. Photo taken 04/24/04.
County of New Castle
The split of Delaware 2 east and 72 north occurs at the Kirkwood Highway intersection with Possum Park Road. Delaware 72 turns left onto Possum Park Road northbound 2.9 miles into northeast Newark, the Middle Run Natural Area, and White Clay Creek State Park. Photo taken 04/24/04.
Kirkwood Highway eastbound at the north end of Harmony Road. Harmony Road connects Delaware 2 with Delaware 4 (Ogletown Stanton Road) near the Christiana Hospital. The north-south roadway continues from there to junction Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) and Interstate 95 (Delaware Turnpike). Photo taken 03/28/04.
Pike Creek Road ends at Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) one mile east of Harmony Road. The road loops westward to Upper Pike Creek Road and Polly Drummand Hill Road to the north of Delaware 2. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Delaware 2 eastbound at Milltown Road. Milltown Road begins here and ends at Delaware 41 (Newport Gap Pike) near the Delaware 34 (Faulkland Road). The east-west highway is a busy commuter route in and around the confluence of Delaware 7 (Limestone Road) and McKennans Church Road. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Kirkwood Highway transitions into a commercial strip between St. James Church Road and Prices Corner. The four to six lane arterial features commercial frontage throughout the stretch and several traffic signals. Pictured here is the eastbound intersection with St. James Church Road, a popular short cut road between Delaware 2 and Delaware 4 & 7 at Stanton. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Approaching Delaware 7 (Limestone Road) on Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) eastbound. The junction between the two surface arterials exists amid strip malls, car dealerships, restaurants, etc. Therefore numerous traffic movements occur in and around the large intersection and the area is very congested during the evening peak hours of travel. Photo taken 03/20/04.
Delaware 7 constitutes the primary arterial between Churchman's Crossing (junction Interstate 95 and Delaware 1 & 58) and the Pike Creek Valley. Limestone Road saw expansion from a two-lane roadway to four-lane arterial between Milltown Road and Valley Road near Hockessin between 1980 and 2000. The state route continues northward from there into Pennsylvania to junction Pennsylvania 41 (Gap Newport Road). Photo taken 03/20/04.
Eastbound at Duncan Road near the Red Clay Creek crossing. Duncan Road begins at Marshallton nearby from Greenbank Road and Newport Roads just to the south. North of Delaware 2, Duncan Road intersects the west end of Delaware 34 (Faulkland Road) in 0.9 miles before its end at McKennans Church Road and the Delcastle Recreation Center (county park). Photo taken 03/20/04.
A six-lane high level bridge provides the crossing over the Red Clay Creek between Duncan Road and junction Delaware 41 (Newport Gap Pike). The modern span replaced an aging four-lane bridge in the late 1980s. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Nearing the merge with Delaware 41 southbound at Newport Gap Pike and Prices Corner. Delaware 41 enters the state along the Newport Gap Pike north of Hockessin. The pike constitutes a historic route between the towns of Newport and Gap, Pennsylvania. Nowadays the route is busy trucking corridor between northern Delaware and U.S. 30. Delaware 41 continues Pennsylvania 41 southward to Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) and the Newport Freeway (Delaware 141). Photo taken 03/28/04.
Delaware 2 & 41 merge at the Newport Gap Pike. Coinciding with the 1999 reconstruction of the Newport Freeway, Delaware 62 shields were posted for Newport Gap Pike southbound on Kirkwood Highway. Delaware 62 at the time was touted as the preferred alternate route to Delaware 141 from Delaware 2 & 41 in lieu of the Exit 6 interchange at Prices Corner due to closures. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Delaware 2 east & 41 south reassurance shields on Kirkwood Highway between Newport Gap Pike and Albertson Boulevard. The half-mile overlap was a result of the 1979 opening of the Newport Freeway between Delaware 2 and Interstate 95-295-495. Construction of Delaware 141 between Prices Corner and Newport displaced Delaware 41 (Newport Gap Pike) as the through route. Thus Delaware 41 was truncated from its terminus at New Castle northward to the Exit 6 interchange of Delaware 141 with Delaware 2. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The right-hand lane of Delaware 2 east & 41 south becomes exit-only for the Newport Freeway at Prices Corner. The six-lane highway crosses over Centerville Road between Albertson Boulevard and the partial cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 12/19/01.
Depicted here is the same overhead sign assembly as portrayed above but with a new sign affixed to the old panel. The control points of Delaware 141 include Newport for southbound (junction Delaware 4 and Interstate 95 & U.S. 202) and Fairfax for northbound (junction U.S. 202). Photo taken 03/28/04.
Delaware 41 southbound shield posted at the east exit of the Prices Corner shopping center and Centerville Road undercrossing. Centerville Road parallels the Newport Freeway between Greenbank Road and Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road). Ramps between Delaware 141 and Delaware 2 interplay with the roadway below. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The original sign for the Delaware 41 & 141 southbound on-ramp from Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) eastbound. Note the greenout for Delaware 41 & 141. The placard overlaid badly worn shields from 1979. Photo taken 12/19/01.
Replacement overhead for the southbound Newport Freeway off-ramp of Delaware 2 east. The inclusion of Delaware 41 here is out of convenience and an overall misnomer. An end sign for Delaware 41 is posted where the ramp joins the southbound Delaware 141 collector/distributor roadway. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Kirkwood Highway reduces from six to four lanes east of Delaware 141 on the way to Elsmere. The right-hand lane departs Delaware 2 east onto a cloverleaf ramp for Delaware 141 (Ferris and Centre Roads) northbound. Delaware 141 was proposed to continue as a freeway north of here. However community opposition and economic costs precluded the extension from ever happening. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Town of Elsmere
Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) eastbound at the south end of Sanders Lane and west end of New Road in central Elsmere. New Road parallels Delaware 2 eastward toward the Wilmington city line. The two-lane roadway however is discontinuous east of Delaware 100 due to the CSX Railroad tracks. New mast arm traffic light assemblies are placed throughout Elsmere on Delaware 2 as part of a beautification project along Kirkwood Highway through the town. Photo taken 03/20/04.
Eastbound Delaware 2 reassurance shield posted between Sanders Lane and Birch Avenue. Brickwork exists within the median of Delaware 2 and at various crosswalks and intersections enhance the aesethetics of the state route through town. Photo taken 03/20/04.
Junction Delaware 100 (Dupont Road) at the foot of the CSX Railroad bridge on Delaware 2 east. Dupont Road is the primary north-south arterial through the town of Elsmere. The roadway skirts the eastern reaches of the city between Richardson Park (junction Delaware 4) and Faulkland Road (junction Delaware 34). Photo taken 03/20/04.
A four-lane span traverses the CSX Railroad tracks east of Delaware 100 (Dupont Road). The bridge replaced the New Road railroad crossing below. Opened in the late 1980s, the current four-lane bridge replaced an aging two-lane span in the mid 1980s. Ahead is the New Road merge onto Delaware 2 and the Prospect Road traffic light and Wilmington city line. Photo taken 03/29/04.
City of Wilmington
Eastbound Delaware 2 (Wilmington Avenue) at Prospect Road near the Wilmington/Elsmere city line. Prospect Road stems southward from adjacent New Road at the intersection with Wilmington Avenue. The two roads serve an economically repressed residential area south of the state route. The signals themselves are enforced by a photo cop. Photo taken 03/29/04.
Delaware 2 enters Canby Park and partitions between the one-way couplet of Union Street (westbound) and Lincoln Street (eastbound). The two north-south roadways carry at least two overall lanes through the Hilltop and Little Italy neighborhoods of the city. Photo taken 03/29/04.
Eastbound at the junction of Delaware 48 east (Lancaster Avenue) on Lincoln Street. A unique "TO I-95" guide sign directs motorists onto Lancaster Avenue for the Jackson Street on-ramp to Interstate 95 southbound. Delaware 48 provides the fastest access to the freeway from Delaware 2 and Hilltop. Photo taken 04/27/04.
One block north of Lancaster Avenue is Delaware 48 west (Second Street). The state route merges with Delaware 2 west on Union Street for one block before uniting with Delaware 48 east on Lancaster Avenue. Delaware 48 provides the main route between downtown and northwest Wilmington, Hockessin, and the Delaware 41/Pennsylvania 41 corridor to Gap, Pennsylvania (junction U.S. 30). Photo taken 04/27/04.
Drawing near the intersection with Delaware 9 (Fourth Street) on Delaware 2 (Lincoln Street) eastbound. Delaware 9 follows Fourth Street southward from Union Street (Delaware 2 west) to U.S. 13 and the Christina River. From there U.S. 13 & Delaware 9 take a southerly course through Southbridge and the city line. Fourth Street represents the main arterial between Hilltop and downtown. Photo taken 04/27/04.
Lincoln Street eastbound at Fourth Street. No Delaware 9 signs are posted at the Fourth Street intersection itself. The city of Wilmington undertook cosmetic improvements at the Delaware 2 east & 9 intersection to create the gateway to the Little Italy neighborhood. Note that two ground level signals join the mast arm supported signals for Lincoln Street eastbound. Photo taken 04/27/04.
Delaware 2 (Lincoln Street) eastbound within the Little Italy neighborhood of Wilmington. This sequence of photos looks at the intersections with Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Street. The city embarked upon a beautification project in 2000 through the corridor that entailed the placement of new ornamental lighting fixtures, new mast arm traffic lights, trees, and brick sidewalks. Photo taken 04/27/04.
An end sign is posted for Delaware 2 at the intersection of Lincoln Street and Pennsylvania Avenue (Delaware 52). Lincoln Street becomes two-way across Delaware 52 for one block to 13th Street. Lincoln Street is discontinuous between 13th and Liberia Street due to the placement of the CSX Railroad line. To the left Delaware 52 travels out of the city to junction Delaware 100 & 141 at Greenville. Southward Pennsylvania Avenue ascends toward Broom Street and downtown. Photo taken 04/01/04.
Scenes pertaining to Delaware 2
Otts Chapel Road northbound approaching junction Delaware 2 (Elkton Road) in western Newark. Otts Chapel Road / Pleasant Hill Road provides a through route between Elkton Road and U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) near the Maryland state line. Otts Chapel Road carries four overall lanes from the Interstate 95 under crossing northward across the AMTRAK Northeast Corridor to Delaware 2. Photo taken 05/15/05.
A closer look at the signalized intersection of Otts Chapel Road and Delaware 2 (Elkton Road). A local business driveway ties into the intersection from the north. Westward, Delaware 2 continues less than a half mile to the Maryland state line and junction Maryland 277. Elkton Road eastbound splits with Delaware 2 at junction Delaware 4, Delaware 896, and Delaware 2 Business in 0.6 miles. Photo taken 05/15/05.
The north end of Harmony Road at Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) east of Newark. Harmony Road links Kirkwood Highway with Delaware 4 (Stanton Ogletown Road) and Delaware 273 (Christiana Road). The two-lane roadway is a popular short cut between Delaware 2 and Interstate 95 (Exit 3). Because of this, DelDOT implored traffic calming measures on Harmony Road between Delaware 4 and 273 in 1999-00 to reduce speeds on the roadway. Photo taken 12/23/06.
Delaware Park Drive northbound on the approach to junction Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) east of Newark. Delaware Park Drive constitutes the main entrance into the Delaware Park Racetrack and Casino from Kirkwood Highway and points northwest. The four-lane divided highway also links Delaware 2 with Old Capitol Trail. Photo taken 05/01/05.
A pair of Delaware 2 shields direct motorists onto the respective directions of Kirkwood Highway. To the east is the intersection with Milltown Road, to the west is Pike Creek Road. A Hess gas station lies across Delaware 2 from the end of Delaware Park Drive. Photo taken 05/01/05.
Old Capitol Trail (former Delaware 2) eastbound at the Marshallton Bridge over Red Clay Creek. The historic steel thru girder bridge opened on November 21, 1931 and is 119 feet long and 24 feet wide.1 Included on the span are concrete block end posts topped by obelisks, adding to the bridges original appeal. Photo taken 09/01/05.
Just east of the Marshallton Bridge is the signalized intersection with Newport Road. Newport Road leads north to Duncan and Greenbank Roads and south to Kiamensi Road at DelTech High School and Belvedere. Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) intersects Duncan road nearby. Photo taken 09/01/05.
