The Guide to Delaware State Route 3

Delaware 3 serves the Brandywine Hundred and Edgemoor communities of northeastern Delaware between Interstate 495 and Delaware 92 (Naamans Road). The state route for the most part travels through residential areas and constitutes just two lanes. Four lane segments however exist along Marsh Road near Interstate 95 and Edgemoor Road near U.S. 13. Delaware 3 has been around since at least 1950.

Delaware 3 features interchanges with both Interstate 95 (Exit 9) and Interstate 495 (Exit 4). The southern terminus occurs within the Interstate 495 partial cloverleaf interchange at Edgemoor. The exit with the Wilmington Bypass opened in 1989 in an effort to improve access to northeast Wilmington, Edgemoor, and U.S. 13 (Governor Printz Boulevard). Economic decline has taken its toll on U.S. 13 (Northeast Boulevard & Governor Printz Boulevard) since the 1970s.

The southern terminus was originally at Business U.S. 13. When the interchange for Exit 4 on Interstate 495 was constructed in 1988-89, Delaware 3 saw extension southeastward to Hay Road. Two end Delaware 3 shields exist however. A second end installation is posted at the intersection with U.S. 13 (Governor Printz BoulevarD) to the west of the partial-cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 04/00.

Hay Road northbound at Edgemoor Road (Delaware 3) to the east of Interstate 495. Hay Road travels northward from Twelfth Street alongside the Dupont Delaware River complex to Fox Point State Park. Delaware 3 begins from Hay Road at the Exit 4 interchange of Interstate 495. Photo taken 03/20/04.
The northbound off-ramp from Interstate 495 loops onto Hay Road just north of Edgemoor Road (Delaware 3). Hay Road travels southward from Fox Point State Park and nearby industrial areas to the southern terminus of Delaware 3 here. A northbound on-ramp to Interstate 495 departs Hay Road just south of Edgemoor Road independent of the U.S. 13 (Governor Printz Boulevard) ramps to the west. Photo taken 03/20/04.

Delaware 92 (Naamans Road) westbound approaching the northern terminus of Delaware 3 (Marsh Road). Naamans Road underwent a lengthy reconstruction and widening project between 1985 and 2000. Road work at the northern terminus intersection of Delaware 3 was only completed in 2000. Photo taken 08/04/04.
A small guide sign is posted for the southbound beginning of Delaware 3 (Marsh Road) on Delaware 92 (Naamans Road) westbound. Delaware 3 intersects Grubb & Harvey Roads 0.75 miles to the south near the Ardens. One mile south of there is the confluence of Silverside, Wilson, and Veale Roads. These five roads compose the main network of through roads through Brandywine Hundred. Photo taken 08/04/04.

U.S. 13 Business & Delaware 3 overlap between Edgemoor Road and Washington Street Extension near Bellefonte. The state highway used to travel Marsh Road northward from Edgemoor Road without the U.S. 13 Business overlap. However around 1990 DelDOT relocated the Delaware 3 path to bypass residential areas of Marsh Road between Washington Street and Edgemoor Road. The relocation likely stemmed from the potential increase in truck traffic due to the 1989 opening of the Interstate 495 interchange with Delaware 3. Photo taken 04/09/04.
U.S. 13 Business & Delaware 3 northbound (Philadelphia Pike) at the five point intersection with Marsh Road and Lore Avenue. A Delaware 3 shield points northward to Philadelphia Pike indicating that the state route no longer follows Marsh Road through here. Out of view is Lore Avenue to the right. The surface street links U.S. 13 Business & Delaware 3 with the incorporated village of Bellefonte (pop. 1,249). Marsh Road intersects the Exit 9 interchange of Interstate 95 one mile to the north. Otherwise Silverside Road is part of a longer through route between U.S. 202 (Concord Pike) and U.S. 13 Business (Philadelphia Pike) through the heart of Brandywine Hundred. Note that Silverside Road westbound sees a pair of dog house signals. Photo taken 04/09/04.
