A cutout for Delaware 4 remains in place on Monroe Street between Lancaster Avenue (Delaware 48 east) and Maryland Avenue (Delaware 4 east). The relic remains the first westbound reassurance shield for the 14.12-mile route. Ahead Monroe Street ends and Delaware 4 westbound joins Delaware 4 eastbound on Maryland Avenue. Delaware 4 westbound turns onto Maryland Avenue and intersects the one block Elm Street before intersecting Adams Street southbound. Elm Street provides for the right-hand turn movement for Adams Street southbound. An original Interstate 95 Delaware shield remained in place at Delaware 4 and Elm Street pointing toward Adams Street; the shield was replaced by August 2007. The closest on-ramps to Interstate 95 are Adams and Second Street for southbound and Adams and Tenth Street for northbound. Photos taken 03/21/04 & 08/05/07.

Delaware 4 westbound leaves the city of Wilmington at the five-way intersection with Broom Street and Latimer Avenue/Place. Broom Street brings traffic onto Maryland Avenue from the West Side and Hilltop neighborhoods of the city. Ahead Maryland Avenue reaches Canby Park, junction Delaware 100 (Dupont Road), and the community of Richardson Park. Photo taken 04/23/04.

County of New Castle
Three blocks west of the Wilmington city line is the signalized intersection with Alban Drive. Several older style Eagle signals remained in use along Maryland Avenue between Wilmington and Newport until Summer 2004. This particular assembly served a nearby shopping center and residential area. Photo taken 04/24/04.
The southern reaches of Canby Park extend to Delaware 4 (Maryland Avenue) between Clayton Road and Race Street. A junction shield for Delaware 100 (Race Street) resides ahead of the Germay Drive intersection. Like all of the older Eagle signals along Maryland Avenue, the ones in place here were replaced during the Summer of 2004. Photo taken 04/24/04.

Dupont Road becomes southbound for Delaware 100's final two blocks between Race Street and Maryland Avenue. The state route intersects Delaware 4 at an angle, tying into the southern component of Dupont Road to the left. Note the unusual traffic signals for Dupont Road northbound featuring double red and green arrows indicating the one-way direction of Dupont Road north of Delaware 4. Photo taken 04/24/04.
Delaware 4 (Maryland Avenue) westbound at the eastern terminus of Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road). The state route becomes the Newport Pike west of Boxwood Road en route to Newport itself. Boxwood Road carries Delaware 62 northwest to junction Delaware 141 (Newport Freeway) at Centerville Road and the GM Boxwood Road Auto Assembly Plant. Photo taken 03/20/04.

Delaware 4 splits between the one-way couplet of Justis Street (westbound) and Main Street (eastbound) through the town of Newport. Pictured here is the Newport Freeway viaduct and Delaware 141 & Interstate 95 trailblazers for the upcoming intersections with Marshall Street (access to Delaware 141 northbound) and James Street southbound (access to Delaware 141 southbound and Interstate 95). Delaware 4 (Justis Street) westbound passes under the Newport Freeway between Marshall and James Streets. Delaware 141 southward bound traffic is directed onto James Street south for the Market Street (Delaware 4) eastbound on-ramp to the Newport Freeway. Delaware 4 west & 7 south (Wilmington Christiana Turnpike) southbound after the intersection with Delaware Park Boulevard. Delaware Park Boulevard provides the main entrance from Stanton and Delaware 4 & 7 to the east. Delaware Park is home to horse racing, slot machine betting, and a golf course. Photo taken 05/20/07.
Delaware 4 & 7 span White Clay Creek and intersect a connector to old Stanton Christiana Road (original Delaware 4 & 7). Pictured here are reassurance shields posted beyond the signalized intersection. Old Stanton Christiana Road parallels the six-lane bypass to the east through an industrial area. West of the second entrance to the Chrysler Assembly Plant is where Christina Parkway bottlenecks from four to two lanes to cross the AMTRAK northeastern corridor. A Delaware 4 shield is posted along on the ascent above the railroad line. Photo taken 04/30/04.

Delaware 2 westbound returns to its original alignment on Elkton Road for the one-mile drive into the state of Maryland. The state route becomes Maryland 279 at the border and intersects the Exit 109 interchange of Interstate 95 one mile south of there. An access road continues northward from Christina Parkway to Suburban Plaza Shopping Center. Photo taken 04/30/04.

Harmony Road southbound at junction Delaware 4 (Ogletown Stanton Road) southeast of Newark. Harmony Road composes a north-south through route between Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) at Interstate 95 (Exit 3) and Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway). The intersection with Delaware 4 lies between Christiana Hospital and two campuses of the credit card bank MBNA. Despite the usefulness of Harmony Road for through traffic interests, local residents lobbied successfully for traffic calming measures to be implored between Delaware 4 and Delaware 273 on Harmony Road. The DelDOT preferred route between Delaware 2 and Delaware 273 is for traffic is to use Delaware 273 west to Ruthar Drive and Red Mill Road for Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) or vice versa. The Newport Gap Pike becomes James Street southbound in Newport and Marshall Street northbound in Newport. The one-way couplet facilitates the movements from the Newport Freeway southbound to Delaware 4 west (Justis Street) and east (Main Street) and from Delaware 4 onto Delaware 141 north. The Exit 4A off-ramp of Delaware 141 ties into James Street just one block north of Delaware 4 west. Photos taken 07/31/04.
