ALTERNATE

Delaware 5 Alternate provides a truck bypass for Delaware 5 west of Milton. It begins at the intersection of Harbeson Road (Road 22) & Sand Hill Road (Road 319) south of town. The state route travels west from Delaware 5 (Harbeson Road) along Sand Hill Road 1.3 miles to Delaware 30 (Gravel Hill Road - Road 248). From there the two highways overlap northward 1.1 miles to junction Delaware 16 (Broadkill Road). There Delaware 5 Alternate turns eastward with Delaware 16 to its intersection with Delaware 5.1 The designation first appeared on Delaware Road maps in the 2000s.
