Delaware 9 (Bayside Drive) northbound splits with Delaware 1 (Bay Road) and quickly intersects Kitts Hummock Road on the outskirts of Dover Air Force Base. Kitts Hummock Road spurs southeast from Delaware 1 and 9 to Kitts Hummock on the Delaware Bay. Photo taken 08/05/07.

Reedy Point Road departs Delaware 9 at the south approach to the Reedy Point Bridge. The road parallels Delaware 9 northward to the Augustine and Canal Wildlife Areas and Dutch Neck Road. Town of Delaware City
Delaware 9 returns to grade at Fort Dupont State Park and the intersection of New Castle Avenue and Polktown Place. The state route becomes 5th Street as it enters the town limits of Delaware City across the Delaware City Canal. Pictured here is the canal crossing and Delaware City welcome sign. Delaware City is a small town along the Delaware River. The community features a small grid pattern of streets with Delaware 9 as the main north-south road and Clinton Street as the main east-west avenue. The only traffic light in town, since replaced in 2005, governs the intersection of Delaware 9 (Fifth Street) and Clinton Street. Clinton Street becomes Cox Neck Road en route to U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) near North St. Georges. Photo taken 04/04/04.

Delaware 9 turns westward along Wrangle Hill Road from Delaware City to junction Delaware 72. The southern terminus of the state route coincides with the intersection of Wrangle Hill, River, and Clarks Corner Road near the Valero Refinery complex. Delaware 72 northbound continues Wrangle Hill Road west to junction U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) and Delaware 1 (Exit 152) at Wrangle Hill itself. Clarks Corner Road travels southward from the intersection to Cox Neck Road and North St. Georges. The SR 1 Turnpike interchange with U.S. 13 & Delaware 72 exists 1.75 miles to the west. The northbound beginning of Delaware 72 parts ways with Delaware 9 (River Road). Delaware 72 constitutes a circuitous route between Delaware City, Newark, and the Pike Creek Valley. Delaware 9 meanwhile meanders through wetlands between the U.S. 13 & Delaware 1 corridors and the Delaware River itself between Delaware City and New Castle. Photo taken 04/04/04.

Town of New Castle

Delaware 9 travels Seventh Street through southwest New Castle to the intersection of Washington Avenue. There the state route turns northward to junction Delaware 141 (Basin Road) and 273 (Frenchtown Road). The alignment bypasses the previous alignment of 7th Street, South Street, and 6th Street through the heart of town. Photo taken 08/05/07.

Delaware 9 joins Delaware 273 along Delaware Street and Ferry Cut Off Street between Washington Avenue and East 6th Street. The two overlap between the southern terminus of Delaware 141 (Basin Road) and the original alignment of Delaware 9 (East 6th Street). Delaware 273 ends at the Ferry Cut Off Street intersection with 6th and Chestnut Streets. From there Delaware 9 travels Wilmington Road northward along a four-lane arterial. Photo taken 04/04/04.
Delaware 9 northbound at Moores Road. Moores Road travels northward from Delaware 9 (Wilmington Road) to Boulden Boulevard and Landers Lane in the Wilmington Manor community. Cherry Lane crosses Delaware 9 (New Castle Avenue) between Interstate 295 and Landers Lane. The roadway carries Interstate 295 northbound traffic onto New Castle Avenue and serves the Delaware War Memorial to the east of Delaware 9. New Castle Avenue enters a cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 295 & U.S. 40. The junction was reconstructed between 1998-2000 to include new pavement, a replaced bridge deck, and new signs. A collector/distributor roadway exists along Delaware 9 northbound for the Interstate 295 ramps and the Delaware River and Bay Authority Administrative offices within the carriageways of the freeway below. City of Wilmington
Delaware 9 (New Castle Avenue) northbound enters the city limits of Wilmington at Claymont Street through the ghettos of Southbridge. A retro set of mast arm signals remains in place for the short spur of Claymont Street at Eden Park. Several abandoned public housing complexes reside on the street to the left. Photo taken 04/04/04.
D Street carries U.S. 13 northbound from Heald Street one block east onto Delaware 9 northbound (New Castle Avenue) in the South Bridge neighborhood of Wilmington. From here the two routes overlap for five blocks on the one-way street couplet of New Castle Avenue (northbound) and Heald Street (southbound). Photo taken 04/04/04.

One block to the north of C Street is the signalized intersection with B Street. The alphabet series of streets in Wilmington exists south of the Christina River. B, C, and D street are short roadways in South Bridge alone. E, F, and G Streets were planned but never built. Photo taken 04/04/04.

Delaware 9A provides a loop from Delaware 9 via Christina Avenue and Terminal Avenue for the Port of Wilmington. U.S. 13 & Delaware 9 (Heald Street) northbound at Delaware 9A (Christina Avenue). Christina Avenue was once a busier road leading Wilmington area motorists to a Ferry terminal along the Delaware River. Ferry service used to carry cars and trucks across the Delaware River to Penns Grove, New Jersey. When the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened to traffic in 1951 the ferry service ceased. Christina Avenue carried Delaware 48 eastward from Lancaster Avenue to the ferry until that time. The route received its number from the New Jersey 48 counterpart in Penns Grove. However with the ferry crossing no longer in place Delaware 48 saw truncation westward back to Market Street. Photo taken 04/04/04.

U.S. 13 north departs Delaware 9 to the right onto Church Street at the Amtrak overpass adjacent to Christina Park. Delaware 9 remains on Fourth Street westward through the central business district en route to its conclusion at Delaware 2 (Union Street) in the Hill Top neighborhood of the city. U.S. 13 splits between the one-way couplet of Church Street (northbound) and Spruce Street (southbound) between Fourth Street and Eleventh Street. Delaware 9 intersects Spruce Street in one block. One of two original Delaware 9 cutouts remaining as of April 2004 was posted on Fourth Street northbound between Dupont and Scott Streets. The relic dated back to at least the 1960s and was missing by 2007. photo taken 03/20/04, second photo taken 06/00.
Approaching Delaware 2 east (Lincoln Street) on Delaware 9 (Fourth Street) northbound. Several signs are posted for the Delaware 2 & 9 confluence. A beautification project results in the placement of new ornamental light fixtures, decorative mast arms, new signs, and new tree plantings. The project occurred in 2000 and was done to add to the appeal of the Little Italy neighborhood nearby. Delaware 2 east enters Little Italy on its final trek to Delaware 52 (Pennsylvania Avenue). A second junction shield for Delaware 2 is posted between Lincoln and Union Streets on Delaware 9 northbound. The assembly should feature a north placard as Union Street carries the westbound direction of the state route. Two blocks to the west on Union Street is the merge with Delaware 48 westbound (Second Street). Delaware 48 provides the main route through northwest Wilmington to Hockessin via Lancaster Avenue. The end sign for Delaware 9 resides just beyond the Union Street (Delaware 2 west) intersection. Delaware 9 & 273 shield assembly posted at the intersection of Chestnut, Ferry Cut-off and Sixth Street in the town of New Castle. Delaware 9 travels Sixth Street southward from Wilmington Road onto Ferry Cut-off Street and Delaware 273. The original alignment of Delaware 9 took Sixth Street through the heart of New Castle until the early 1990s.
