The Guide to Delaware State Route 14

Delaware 14 was a much longer route at time than it is today. In 1938 the highway stretched from the Maryland state line west of Harrington eastward to Milford as it does today. The route continued southeast from there to Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, and ultimately Bethany Beach. By 1944 the connection to Ocean City, Maryland through Fenwick Island was complete and Delaware 14 extended. Delaware 14 remained on this alignment until the mid 1970s.

Delaware 14 from Ocean City, Maryland northward to the city of Milford became apart of a new Delaware 1 in the mid 1970s. The designation resulted in the truncation of Delaware 14 to Milford from the state line and the changing of Delaware 14A in Rehoboth Beach into Delaware 1A. A new Delaware 1 Business also was born in the city of Milford along Rehoboth Boulevard over what was Delaware 14. Delaware 14 than was rerouted onto NE Front Street to a new endpoint at the Delaware 1 Milford Bypass expressway.

Delaware 14 straddles northern reaches of downtown Milford via Northeast and Northwest Front Streets. The state highway ends at a non-descript intersection with the Milford Bypass (Delaware 1). Map created by Kelly Krapp (October 2007).

Delaware 14 (Vernon Road) continues the alignment of Maryland 317 (Burrsville Road) eastward into the Diamond State from Burrsville, Maryland. Vernon Road carries Delaware 14 eight miles to the east where the highway enters the city limits of Harrington. Harrington is probably best known in the state for being home to the Delaware State Fair and slot machines at Harrington Raceway. Other casinos in the state exist at Dover Downs and Delaware Park Racetrack. The state route follows Commerce and Clark Streets through town before intersecting U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway). East of town the route is pretty cut and dry. Delaware 14 travels the Milford Harrington Highway east six miles into Milford. In Milford Delaware 14 follows Front Street between junction U.S. 113 and Delaware 1.
