Delaware 15 represents one of the younger entries into the state highway system having only been commissioned since the late 1980's. The original alignment linked the city of Milford (pop. 6,732) with U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) outside of Viola (pop. 156). Delaware 15 follows Canterbury Road northward from Delaware 14 (Milford Harrington Highway) ten miles to junction U.S. 13 at the village of Canterbury. Until the early 1990's the intersection with U.S. 13 represented the northern end of the route.
In the early 1990's both Delaware 1 and Delaware 15 saw extension from central Delaware into New Castle County. Most of the fanfare followed the Delaware 1 lengthening for obvious reasons, however the growth of Delaware 15 was hardly worth overlooking. Beginning at Canterbury, Delaware 15 continued northward via U.S. 13 Alternate (Upper King Road) 1.8 miles to Woodside (pop. 2,174). There the state route joins 1993-created Delaware 10 Alternate along Main Street through the heart of town. The short marriage between the two state highways ends at Dundee Road when Delaware 15 resumes a northerly course.
Delaware 15 stays west of Camden (pop. 2,100) on both Dundee and Moose Lodge Roads. However the route snakes its way into the Camden counterpart of Wyoming (pop. 1,141) via Westville Road and Railroad Avenue. The oscillation of Delaware 15 does not end there as the state highway jots back and forth through west Dover on Wyoming Mill Road, North Street, Saulsbury Road, McKee Road, and Central Church Road. The usefulness of the route improved with the completion of Scarborough Road between McKee Road and the Exit 104 interchange of the SR 1 Turnpike at U.S. 13. The connection provides a bypass route for West Dover between Delaware 8 and U.S. 13 & Delaware 1.

A look at the jagged path of Delaware 15 through western reaches of Dover.
Delaware 15 leaves the city limits of Dover (pop. 32,135) via Kenton Road. The north-south highway carries the state route 1.7 miles northward to junction Delaware 42 (Seven Hickories Road) at Moores Corner. Delaware 15 & 42 share Seven Hickories Road from there westward 1.2 miles to Brenford Road. Delaware 42 continues west to Kenton (pop. 237) and junction Delaware 300. Delaware 15 meanwhile joins Delaware 300 (Wheatleys Pond Road) via Mt. Friendship Road in 2.7 miles. The third overlap of Delaware 15 lasts just 1,000 feet.
Alley Corner Road migrates Delaware 15 northwest to Delaware 6 (Millington Road). A fourth cosigning for Delaware 15 brings the state route into the town of Clayton (pop. 1,273) by way of Delaware 6. The 1.3-mile multiplex ends at the Millington Road intersection with Duck Creek Road. From there Delaware 15 again turns northward across Providence Creek into New Castle County.
The convoluted alignment of Delaware 15 continues northward in rural portions of southwest New Castle County through the settlements of Greensburg, Dexters Corner, and Taylors Corner, as well as swaths of the Blackbird State Forest. The last leg of the routing via Levels Road brings Delaware 15 to U.S. 301 & Delaware 299 (Middletown Warwick Road) and the city limits of Middletown (pop. 6,161). Delaware 15 joins the tandem for a one mile trek to the intersection of Main Street and Bunker Hill Road west of downtown. Delaware 299 departs U.S. 301 for Main Street east and Delaware 15 turns northwest on Bunker Hill Road and Choptank Roads. The final stretches of Delaware 15 are slowly succumbing to suburban sprawl as the Wilmington metropolitan area expands southward by way of Middletown and Summit Bridge. The rural intersection of Choptank Road and Bethel Church Road (Delaware 286) may someday feature a traffic signal and commercial businesses. For now Delaware 15 remains somewhat rural between Delaware 286 and the three-way multiplex of U.S. 301 & Delaware 71 & 896 nearby.

| Delaware 15 draws to a close at the Choptank Road intersection with U.S. 301 & Delaware 71-896 outside of the settlement of Summit Bridge. The Summit Bridge itself crosses the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal just north of the signalized intersection. Several hundred new single family homes are built or planned along U.S. 301 within the vicinity of the north end of Delaware 15. Thus the signals in the background are fully activated now. They were set to flash at the time of the photograph. Photo taken 08/05/07 |
