Delaware 26 serves the extreme southeastern portion of Sussex County between Gumboro and Bethany Beach. The state highway transitions into Maryland 353 en route to Pittsville and junction U.S. 50 south of the border. North of the state line, Delaware 26 travels north-south with Delaware 54 and Delaware 30 to the village of Gumboro, The three-way overlap ends there as Delaware 54 turns eastward toward Selbyville. Delaware 30 however continues northward with Delaware 26 to Shaft Ox Corner. Delaware 30 did not always travel this far south and only saw extension around 1980. From Shaft Ox Corner, Delaware 26 beelines for Dagsboro and junction U.S. 113. A short overlap with Delaware 20 exists on Main Street through the small town. East of there Delaware 26 travels Vine Creek Road toward the coastal communities of Millville, Ocean View, and Bethany Beach.
The designation of Delaware 26 dates back to at least 1938. Until 1944 the state route multiplexed with U.S. 113 from Dagsboro northward to Millsboro and Delaware 24 (Laurel Road). In Millsboro Delaware 26 turned southwestward with Delaware 24 to Phillips Hill and Mission before parting ways just north of Shaft Ox Corner.
