The Guide to Delaware State Route 36

Delaware 36 came into existence by 1944 between Delaware 16 (Beach Highway) and Bay Avenue in Slaughter Beach. The east-west route saw extension westward with Delaware 16 through Greenwood to Scotts Store Road and Delaware 404 at Scotts Corner during the early 1990s.

Beginning in northwestern Sussex County, Delaware 36 links the Delaware & Maryland 404 corridor with Delaware 16 and the town of Greenwood. Delaware 36 follows Scotts Store Road northeast from Delaware 404 (Seashore Highway) 3.6 miles to junction Delaware 16 (Hickman Road). There the two highways join together for a two-mile trek through downtown Greenwood via Hickman Road, Market Street, and the Beach Highway. A short distance east of junction U.S. 13 is the split of Delaware 16 & 36 at the intersection of Shawnee and St. Johnson Roads.

Milford Map - AARoads

Delaware 36 travels through downtown Milford on its routing between U.S. 113 and the Delaware 1 Milford Bypass. Map created by Kelly Krapp (October 2007).

Delaware 36 angles northeast from the village of St. Johnson via Shawnee Road to the city of Milford. The ten-mile drive features wetlands, farmland, and a scattering of homes and small businesses. In Milford Delaware 36 turns onto Lakeview and Causey Avenues between Shawnee Road & U.S. 113 and the central business district. The state route stays south of the Kent County line (the Mispillion River) along Front Street before exiting the city by way of Cedar Beach Road. The junction with the Milford Bypass (Delaware 1) features the only full interchange within all of Sussex County. Five miles east of the diamond interchange is where Delaware 36 draws to a close. The official endpoint of the state route occurs at the Cedar Creek drawbridge just outside of the Slaughter Beach corporate limits.
