The Guide to 48 westbound in Delaware

Westbound

Delaware 48 Westbound
The first westbound reassurance shield for Delaware 48. Posted between French Street and U.S. 13 Business south (King Street), Second Street carries three overall lanes between Walnut Street and the U.S. 13 Business southbound split from King Street at Martin Luther King Boulevard. The left-hand lane allows traffic to use Martin Luther King Boulevard for the Interstate 95 access ramps. Photo taken 03/30/04.
Market Street intersects Delaware 48 westbound one block away from U.S. 13 Business south. The north-south street merges with the business route one block to the south at Martin Luther King Boulevard (Delaware 48 east). To the right the two-lane street continues into the central business district. Photo taken 03/30/04.
A close-up view of two ground level traffic lights at the Market Street intersection. Second Street westbound retains many 30" Eagle signals dating from the 1960s in the city of Wilmington. In the background is the junction with Shipley Street. Photo taken 03/30/04.
Descending along 2nd Street into the intersection with Madison Street in Wilmington's Westside neighborhood. Madison Street travels east from Frawley Stadium, the Riverfront area, and Delaware 4 to Delaware 52 (Delaware Avenue). Photo taken 08/05/07.
The westbound beginning of Delaware 4 departs Delaware 48 (Second Street) westbound via Monroe Street at the Adams Four Shopping Plaza. Delaware 4 westbound merges with eastbound at Maryland Avenue two blocks to the south. Maryland Avenue provides the main route through the Browntown section of the city. Photo taken 03/21/04.

A Interstate 95 northbound detour shield was posted on the approach to Adams Street northbound on Second Street westbound. The left-hand lane ahead defaults onto Jackson Street westbound. As of August 5, 2007, the Interstate 95 north assembly remains and acts as if 2nd Street west is a part of Interstate 95 north! Photo taken 03/21/04.
Delaware 48 westbound at Adams Street northbound at the Interstate 95 viaduct. Overhead is the Martin Luther King Boulevard westbound access ramp to Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 northbound. The flyover becomes the exit-only for the Delaware Avenue (Exit 7) off-ramp. A good way to get from downtown Wilmington to the West Side is to take King Street of Second Street to Martin Luther King Boulevard westbound and the boulevard onto Interstate 95 northbound and the Exit 7 ramp to Ninth and Adams Streets. Photo taken 03/21/04.
The original overhead of Interstate 95 southbound is placed high above Delaware 48 westbound on the northbound viaduct. The on-ramp itself merges with the Jackson Street ramp at Lancaster Avenue before joining the southbound mainline itself. A new Interstate 95 shield was placed on the 1961 overhead in 2000. Photo taken 03/21/04.
Detail of the Interstate 95 southbound guide sign on Second Street westbound. Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 southbound depart the city within one mile. 2.2 miles to the south is the northbound beginning of Interstate 295 for the Delaware Memorial Bridge, New Castle, and Atlantic City, New Jersey. Photo taken 03/21/04.
Interstate 95, Delaware Memorial Bridge, and New Castle County Airport trailblazers are posted at the Delaware 48 westbound ramp to the southbound freeway. The Delaware River and Bay Authority maintains both the bridge and airport and thus posts trailblazers for each throughout northern New Castle County. Photo taken 03/21/04.
Ascending toward the Hill Top neighborhood of the city on Delaware 48 westbound at Broom Street. Broom Street is southbound only at Second Street but converts into two-way traffic at Delaware 48 eastbound (Lancaster Avenue). The street constitutes a main route between here and Delaware 4 (Maryland Avenue). Photo taken 03/21/04.
Delaware 48 westbound merges with Delaware 2 west (Union Street) from Second Street for one block to rejoin Delaware 48 eastbound via Lancaster Avenue. The one-block overlap consists of four overall lanes as Delaware 48 turns to the north. Delaware 2 otherwise continues westward to Canby Park and the town of Elsmere. Photo taken 04/27/04.
The split of Delaware 2 west (Union Street) from Delaware 48 west (Lancaster Avenue). Lancaster Avenue is one-way eastbound to the left and carries two-lanes northward to the city line at Dupont Road. Both state routes junction with Delaware 100 within one mile. Photo taken 04/27/04.
Westbound reassurance shield for Delaware 48 posted between Greenhill and Ford Avenues in northwest Wilmington. Between Greenhill Avenue and the city line the state route consists of a four lane roadway. During the peak hours of travel all four lanes are available for traffic. However during off-peak hours the outside lanes provide for on street parking. Photo taken 03/29/04.
Delaware 48 west & 100 northbound reassurance shields on Lancaster Avenue northbound between the split Dupont Roads. Former Delaware 100 turned right at the upcoming signal to follow Dupont Road between Delaware 48 and Delaware 52 (Kennett Pike). The north-south road still represents the northern reaches of the Wilmington city limits between Lancaster Avenue and Westover Hills. Photo taken 04/26/04.
The split of Delaware 48 west and Delaware 100 northbound occurs at Delaware 141 (Barley Mill Road). Delaware 100 turns eastward onto Centre Road with Delaware 141 to Greenville and Montchanin Road. Delaware 48 continues along Lancaster Pike to Hockessin and Delaware 41 (Newport Gap Pike). Photo taken 04/22/04.
