Delaware 52 Northbound
Faded Delaware 52 northbound reassurance shield on the block of Twelfth Street between Washington and Jefferson Streets. The north-south streets between West and Franklin Streets are named after the first nine U.S. Presidents. Photo taken 03/30/04.
With the former Chase Manhattan buildings as the backdrop, Delaware 52 (12th Street) intersects Jefferson Street. New mast arm traffic signal assemblies dot the downtown area as part of a citywide beautification plan. Photo taken 03/30/04.
Four lanes of Twelfth Street prepare to merge with Delaware Avenue near Madison Street. Small guide signs advise motorists of the upcoming movements for Interstate 95 and the Delaware and Pennsylvania Avenue split. These overheads were supported on a span wire. Now a ornamental mast arm holds them. Photo taken 03/30/04.
Sandwiched between the old Chase Manhattan high rises and the Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery the eight-lane Delaware Avenue. The divided highway northbound prepares to cross over Interstate 95 & U.S. 202. Situated ahead of the Adams Street intersection were a pair of original guide signs with 2000-replaced shields for the freeway. Both signs were carbon copied by 2007. Photos taken 03/30/04 & 12/29/07.
Delaware 52 northbound traffic to Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 northbound utilizes the Adams Street on-ramp to access the freeway. The ramp adds a third northbound lane of the freeway over the Brandywine Creek Bridge for Exit 8 (U.S. 202 & Delaware 202). Adams Street otherwise descends to Lovering Avenue and Park Drive. The carbon copied overhead continues to omit U.S. 202. Photos taken 03/30/04 & 12/29/07.

Looking at the intersection of Adams Street and Delaware Avenue from the northbound sidewalk. No left-hand turns are permitted from Delaware 52 southbound for Adams Street northbound and Adams Street northbound traffic entering the intersection cannot continue straight across. Photo taken 03/30/04.
Approaching the intersection of Jackson Street on Delaware 52 (Delaware Avenue) northbound. An Interstate 95 trailblazer is in place for the upcoming movements to reach the southbound on-ramp. There are no turns permitted at Jackson Street itself on Delaware Avenue northbound. Photo taken 03/19/04.
Delaware Avenue northbound at the split from Delaware 52 (Pennsylvania Avenue) and Van Buren Street northbound. Motorists bound for Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 southbound are advised to turn right onto Van Buren Street to loop via Gilpin Avenue to Jackson Street southbound. An original overhead that once displayed "Interstate 95 South Baltimore" was overlayed with greenouts and a new shield. It was entirely replaced with a copy of the original sign by 2007. Photos taken 03/19/04; 12/99, and 12/29/07.
The original and replacement Interstate 95 Delaware trailblazer at the junction of Delaware Avenue and Van Buren Streets. Additional trailblazers are found on Van Buren Street northbound, Gilpin Avenue eastbound, and Jackson Street southbound to access the various ramps to Interstate 95. An older Delaware 52 shield points toward Pennsylvania Avenue at the Delaware Avenue split. A small park and fountain encompass the wedge between the two avenues and Harrison Street ahead. Photo taken 03/30/04.
Delaware 52 northbound at the west end of Harrison Street. Harrison Street carries Delaware Avenue southbound drivers onto Pennsylvania Avenue. 30" Eagle signals remain in use at the intersection. Photo taken 03/30/04.
No Delaware 2 shields are posted on Pennsylvania Avenue northbound for the Union Street westbound intersection. The roadway does widen to five lanes with the addition of a dedicated left turn lane for the westbound beginning of the state route. Depicted here is the eastern terminus (Lincoln Street) on Delaware 52 northbound. Photo taken 04/01/04.
Union Street splits between two components east and west of Pennsylvania Avenue and north and south of the CSX Railroad line. Delaware 2 westbound skirts alongside the railroad between Delaware 52 and Eleventh Street before traveling into Little Italy. Union Street eastbound departs Pennsylvania Avenue just north of the CSX Railroad overpass for the Trolley Square vicinity at Delaware Avenue. Photo taken 04/01/04.
Pennsylvania Avenue becomes Kennett Pike as Delaware 52 northbound departs the city limits of Wilmington. Pictured here is the first northbound shield posted outside the city north of the intersection with Rising Sun Lane. Photo taken 03/19/04.
Delaware 100 trailblazer on Delaware 52 (Kennett Pike) northbound at Dupont Road. Dupont Road was apart of Delaware 100 between the Kennett Pike and Delaware 48 (Lancaster Avenue) until 1989. The route saw relocation then to bypass the Westover Hills neighborhood to the west. Delaware 100 intersects Delaware 52 ahead via Delaware 141 (Barley Mill Road). Photo taken 03/20/04.
A partial-cloverleaf interchange provides some of the movements between Delaware 52 (Kennett Pike) and Delaware 100 & 141 (Barley Mill Road). Delaware 52 drivers use Montchanin Road northbound for access to Delaware 100 north (Montchanin Road) or Delaware 141 north (Barley Mill Road) and the Tyler McConnell Bridge. Pictured here is the intersection of Kennett Pike and Montchanin Road to the south of the Delaware 100 & 141 split. Photo taken 04/26/04.
Northbound Delaware 52 after the Montchanin Road intersection. A loop ramp serves Delaware 100 & 141 (Barley Mill Road) southbound ahead. The tandem travel a short freeway between Montchanin Road and Old Barley Mill Road to the west. Photo taken 03/20/04.
Traffic from Delaware 100 & 141 northbound merge onto Delaware 52 north ahead of the southbound off-ramp for Barley Mill Road. Delaware 100 & 141 overlap for 1.5 miles between Montchanin Road and Delaware 48 (Lancaster Pike). There Delaware 100 turns southward toward Wilmington and Delaware 141 continues southwest to Prices Corner and the Newport Freeway. Photo taken 03/20/04.
A parting shot of the southbound loop ramp to Delaware 100 & 141 from Delaware 52 northbound. Ahead is the community of Greenville, junction Delaware 82 (1.2 miles), and the Pennsylvania state line (4.4 miles). Photo taken 03/20/04.
