Delaware 58 joined the state highway system in 1988 along with Delaware 37 in the Churchmans Crossing and New Castle County Airport area of northern New Castle County. The state highway follows all of Churchmans Road between Delaware 4 & Delaware Park Racetrack and Slots to Delaware 273 near Hares Corner.
In 1996 a project began to upgrade the busy intersection of Delaware 7 & 58 at Churchmans Crossing near Interstate 95 and the Delaware Technical and Community College Stanton Campus (DTCC). The grid lock at the intersection increased steadily with development in the Pike Creek Valley (Delaware 7 corridor) and east Newark (Delaware 4 corridor). The project entailed replacing the wide intersection with a partial-cloverleaf interchange just north of the Interstate 95 (Exit 4) cloverleaf interchange. In order to build the exit, land from the DTCC campus, Christiana Hilton Hotel, and the adjacent shopping center west of Delaware 7 was needed for the road work. In 1999 most of the construction was complete and by 2000 Delaware 1 saw extension from Interstate 95 (Exit 165) northward to Delaware 58 (Exit 166). The interchange is still missing one element however, a direct ramp from Delaware 1 & 7 south to Interstate 95 south. Demand for that ramp was low enough to allow for the postponement of its construction until a later date. Therefore Delaware 1 & 7 southbound traffic must use the Delaware 58 off-ramp and on-ramp to access Interstate 95 south.
In March of 2004 a bridge replacement project began for the Churchmans Road crossing of Interstate 95. The current two-lane span is in a state of deterioration and needs to be replaced. Therefore DelDOT is building a new wider bridge along the west side of the current span to replace the old one. Upon completion Delaware 58 will expand from two to four lanes over Interstate 95 and the Delaware Turnpike below will expand to ten lanes.
Other projects involving Delaware 58 that are not set in stone involve the addition of a northbound Interstate 95 off-ramp from Churchmans Road. Currently traffic from Delaware 58 must use either the Delaware 1 & 7 southbound loop ramp to Interstate 95 north or use Delaware 37 (Airport Road) to the ramps at U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 (Basin Road/Newport Freeway). It is unclear if the ramp will be built or if the plans were shelved. An additional project involving Delaware 58 involves the extension of the route northward from Delaware 4 (Ogletown Stanton Road) through Delaware Park to Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway). The idea behind the lengthening entails improved access between the Delaware 2 corridor and Churchmans Crossing. Included in the 1990 issued New Castle County 2010 Transportation Plan, the four-lane extension appears to be in serious doubt if not cancelled altogether.
