The Guide to Delaware State Route 92

Delaware 92 composes an arc in northeastern Delaware between Delaware 100 (Montchanin Road) and U.S. 13 (Philadelphia Pike). The east-west route follows Thompsons Bridge Road along a scenic 2.8-mile stretch between Delaware 100 and Beaver Valley Road. Delaware 92 traverses Brandywine Creek State Park and Brandywine Perry Park along Thompsons Bridge Road. Beaver Valley Road carries the state route 0.3 miles to junction U.S. 202 (Concord Pike) just south of the Pennsylvania State line. There is where the story of Delaware 92 takes a dramatic change.

At U.S. 202 (Concord Pike), Delaware 92 changes from a rural two-lane shoulderless road into a four-lane divided arterial. Known as Naamans Road, Delaware 92 arcs between Concord Pike and Claymont amid heavy residential and commercial development. Despite the capacity, many traffic lights dot the 5.6-mile drive, thus slowing the 27,000 plus drivers a day that use Naamans Road. An interchange facilitates the movements between Interstate 95 and Delaware 92 at the Tristate Mall. East of there Delaware 92 nips the northern reaches of the Citisteel industrial site before concluding at U.S. 13 (Philadelphia Pike).

Naamans Road became a part of Delaware 92 as far back as at least 1973. Between that time and 1985 all of Naamans Road consisted of a two-lane highway. As development and its associated traffic grew, Delaware 92 became overrun with congestion and needed expanded capacity. DelDOT broke ground on a widening project in 1985 to expand all of the state route between U.S. 202 and U.S. 13 into a four-lane divided highway. Unfortunately environmental concerns and several construction delays postponed the completion of the project until 2000. Area residents thought the road work would never end, and for many years it seemed as if that would be the case. However by the end of 1999 almost all of the widening was complete and only a few intersection improvements at Delaware 3 (Marsh Road) and 261 (Foulk Road) remained.
