The Guide to Delaware 141 Northbound in Delaware

Delaware 141 Northbound

Delaware 141 Northbound
Delaware 141's first northbound shield, posted after the intersection with Delaware 9 (Washington Avenue) and 273 (Frenchtown Road). William Penn High School lies along the southbound side as Basin Road travels northward toward Wilmington Manor Gardens. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Approaching the intersection at Washington Avenue on Delaware 141 (Basin Road) northbound at Wilmington Manor. Washington Avenue is one of a few east-west residential streets that intersects Basin Road between New Castle and the U.S. 13 & 40 cloverleaf interchange (Exit 1). An upcoming exits sign resides here for the upcoming junction and Newport Freeway exits with Interstate 95-495 (Exits 3A/B) and Delaware 4 (Exit 4). Photo taken 08/05/07.
Delaware 141 (Basin Road) northbound near Bunker Hill Road and the Exit 1A off-ramp to U.S. 13 north & 40 east to Farnhurst (junction Interstate 295) and Wilmington. There is no longer an Exit 1B ramp so Exit 1A should be resigned as Exit 1. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Phase 4 of the SR 141 Basin Road improvement project nears completion on Delaware 141 northbound at Exit 1A (Dupont Highway northbound). U.S. 13 & 40 join together four four miles between State Road (Pulaski Highway) and Farnhurst (Interstate 295). The six to eight lane highway is heavily traveled by both through traffic and commuters alike. New signs here still reflected the closed Exit 1B "ramp" via Delaware Avenue. Photo taken 04/10/04.
Crews installed a new overhead for what was Exit 1B on Delaware 141 (Basin Road) at the departure of Exit 1A onto Dupont Highway northbound. The left-hand panel directs motorists toward the U-turn lane at Jay Drive to replace the movement of the former "ramp" via Delaware Avenue. Photo taken 08/05/07.

A look at the original overheads on Delaware 141 northbound at the northbound Dupont Highway off-ramp. Exit 1B is signed for Dover (U.S. 13 south) and Elkton (U.S. 40 west). The two highways however intersect Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) at Hares Corner before splitting at State Road. Both signs were replaced by 2002. Photo taken 12/99.
The junction of Delaware 141 with U.S. 13 & 40 (Dupont Highway) occurs at Basin Corner. The location is representative of the southern terminus of U.S. 202. The federal highway begins along Delaware 141 and travels northward to Interstate 95 along Basin Road. Pictured here is the first northbound shield, erroneous in that it displays Delaware 202 instead of U.S. 202 and U.S. 141 instead of Delaware 141. The signs have been posted since at least 1999. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Traffic to Dupont Highway (U.S. 13 & 40) southbound from U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 (Basin Road) northbound now must utilize a U-turn lane at the new signalized intersection with Pennsylvania Avenue. The traffic light resides just north of the three-quarter cloverleaf interchange of Exit 1. A new guide sign installed Summer of 2004 directs drivers to turnaround ahead. Photo taken 12/18/04.
Nearing the traffic light at Jay Road on U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 northbound. A Delaware 41 trailblazer is posted along Basin Road northbound for the Exit 6 interchange at Prices Corner. Delaware 41 originally followed Basin Road and Newport Gap Pike northward from New Castle to Prices Corner en route to Hockessin and Gap, Pennsylvania. The state route now ends at the Delaware 2 & 141 junction. Photo taken 04/24/04.
Three U-turn lanes provide the movements between U.S. 202 & 141 north (Basin Road) to U.S. 13 south & 40 west (Dupont Highway) now that the Exit 1B ramp via Delaware Avenue is closed. The second and third U-turn lanes allow for commercial trucks to make the turnaround for the southbound off-ramp. The first lane turns around at Pennsylvania Avenue and does not provide for the turning radius that a tractor trailer needs. The second lane exists at the Jay Drive traffic signal. First photo taken 08/31/04; second photo taken 04/24/04.
Entering the Commons Boulevard intersection with Delaware 37 on Basin Road northbound. Delaware 37 begins here and travels southward through the New Castle County corporate park to Airport Road. The state highway links U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 with Delaware 58 (Churchmans Road) and Delaware 273 (Christiana Road). Photo taken 04/24/04.
U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 northbound at Delaware 37 south (Commons Boulevard). Commons Boulevard carries four overall lanes 1.2 miles southward to Airport Road. Airport Road overtakes Delaware 37 via a two-lane roadway for two miles between Commons Boulevard and the southern terminus at Delaware 273. Photo taken 04/10/04.
The northbound carriageway way separates from the southbound one after the Commons Boulevard intersection. An upcoming exits sign indicates the mileage to Exits 3A/B (Interstate 95 & 495), Exit 4 (Delaware 4) and Exit 5 (Delaware 62 to Delaware 41). Note the 2007 sign replacement. Photos taken 04/24/04 & 08/05/07.
The Exit 3A advance guide sign was missing from an overhead sign assembly on U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 northbound. The Newport Freeway begins here and continues one half mile to the Exit 3A off-ramp to Interstate 95 & 495 (and U.S. 202) northbound. Airport Road ends midway between Delaware 37 and Exit 3A at a stop sign along Basin Road north. Photo taken 04/10/04.
Sign crews replaced the missing Exit 3A overhead on U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 (Basin Road) northbound depicted in the above photobox. The new sign mentions the fact that U.S. 202 overlaps with Interstate 95 northbound from here unlike other new sign replacements in the early 2000s. Unfortunately however, the sign is somewhat small and omits the control cities of Wilmington and Philadelphia. Photo taken 08/31/04.
A second sign installation replaces the undersized sign with a full-sized panel on U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 north after the Newport Freeway beginning. Unfortunately, control cities were again omitted. Photo taken 12/23/06.
Between 1999 and 2001, U.S. 141 & 202 shields were posted on the Newport Freeway northbound at the Interstate 95 & 295 northbound on-ramp. The erroneous U.S. 141 shield however was replaced by late 2001 with a Delaware 141 shield. Other U.S. 141 shields at Delaware 34 and U.S. 202 (Concord Pike) have also been corrected. Photo taken 06/00.
The corrected shield assembly and its 2006-replacement near Exit 3A on U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 northbound. This is the only location where both routes are signed together on the mainline of Basin Road or the Newport Freeway. U.S. 202 saw relocation from the city of Wilmington and an overlap with U.S. 13 to Interstate 95 (Exits 5 through 8) and Delaware 141 on December 7, 1984. Photos taken 04/24/04 & 12/23/06.
New signs posted along Delaware 141 between 1999 and 2002 were done to the exact specifications of the original signs. Unfortunately several changes have occurred in signing practices since 1979 and 2002. For one U.S. 202 is not mentioned on the Exit 3A overhead for its split with Delaware 141. Additionally several "Must Exit" placards remain in use instead of the modern "Exit Only" verbiage used today. Photo taken 04/10/04.
A look at the 1979 overheads at Exit 3A on U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 northbound. Note the duplication between these signs and their replacements. Photo taken 12/19/01.
Again the departure of U.S. 202 from Delaware 141 northbound is only mentioned with a trailblazer at the Exit 3A left-hand loop ramp. The one-lane roadway joins the southbound Delaware 141 off-ramp before merging onto Interstate 95 below. From there traffic has approximately 0.75 miles to maneuver Interstate 95 before the split with Interstate 495 north. The overhead installed in 2000 was replaced by 2006. Photos taken 04/24/04 & 12/23/06.
Interstate 295 southbound features an on-ramp to the Newport Freeway northbound within the Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 cloverleaf interchange. The ramp merges onto Delaware 141 north to create the exit-only lane for Exit 3B (Interstate 95 south). Interstate 95 becomes the Delaware Turnpike west of Delaware 141 en route to Newark and the Maryland state line. Photo taken 04/24/04.
Leaving the confluence of Interstates 95-295-495 & U.S. 202 on Delaware 141 northbound. The Exit 5B off-ramp of Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 southbound adds a third northbound lane to the Newport Freeway. Delaware 141 crosses over the Christina River on the approach to the town of Newport. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Delaware 141 enters the corporate limits of Newport via a four-lane viaduct. Exit 4 departs the freeway for Marshall Street northbound and the split one-way couplet of Delaware 4 (Justis & Main Streets). An upcoming exits sign features the mileage to Exit 5 (Delaware 62), Exits 6A/B (Delaware 2 & 41 north) and junction Delaware 48 & 100 (Lancaster Pike). Photo taken 03/23/04.
Delaware 4 composes the main route into Newport between Stanton and Wilmington. Known as Newport Pike outside of town, the state route splits between Justis Street (westbound) and Main Street (eastbound) underneath of Delaware 141. The Exit 4 off-ramp descends to the intersection of Marshall and Main Streets. Photo taken 08/05/07.
The first guide sign of Exit 5 for Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road) on Delaware 141 northbound. Delaware 62 travels Boxwood Road 1.2 miles west from its beginning at Delaware 4 (Maryland Avenue) to the Exit 5 modified diamond interchange. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Attached to the Highland Avenue overpass is the 0.25-mile overhead for Delaware 62 (Exit 5). Traffic enters the freeway from Marshall Street and Delaware 4 to form a third northbound lane between the two ramps. Delaware 62 follows the southern leg of the Newport Gap Pike between Boxwood Road and Old Capitol Trail (old Delaware 2) at Prices Corner. Photo taken 03/23/04.
Traffic to Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road) departs Delaware 141 northbound at the Burnside Boulevard overpass. The off-ramp merges onto the Newport Gap Pike ahead of the Boxwood Road intersection at the GM Auto Assembly Plant. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Looking northward at the Exit 5 off-ramp and Delaware 141 freeway from the Burnside Boulevard overpass. The Newport Freeway saw major reconstruction in 1999 and 2000 to replace all of the original concrete. Premature cracking was found in the pavement similar to that found on Interstate 495. Thus DelDOT had to reconstructed the entire freeway with new concrete. The project also entailed a resigning project. Photo taken 06/00.
Exit 5 brings drivers onto Newport Gap Pike northbound just south of the Delaware 62 intersection. The Newport Gap Pike was displaced by the construction of the Newport Freeway. The name however was retained on the north and southbound frontage roads of Delaware 141 north of Newport. Photo taken 04/24/04.
Sign bridge on Newport Gap Pike northbound at junction Delaware 62. To the right Delaware 62 eastbound follows Boxwood Road to Richardson Park. Ahead Centerville Road begins its trek to Prices Corner. Delaware 62 westbound overtakes the Newport Gap Pike northward to Old Capitol Trail to the left. It is unclear if the Delaware 62 designation continues north of Old Capitol Trail to Delaware 2 & 41. Newport Gap Pike travels that stretch before becoming a part of Delaware 41 at Kirkwood Highway. Photo taken 04/24/04.
Delaware 141 northbound reassurance shield near the Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road) overpass. The Newport Freeway expands to six overall lanes between Boxwood Road and junction Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway). Photo taken 03/23/04.
The final exit of the Newport Freeway is that of the partial-cloverleaf interchange with Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway). The upcoming exits sign attached to the Boxwood Road over crossing indicates the freeway end in one half mile. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Northward view of the Delaware 141 freeway as it ascends over the CSX Railroad and Centerville Road. Ramps are visible from Centerville Road onto Delaware 141 north and from Delaware 141 south to the intersection of Boxwood Road and Newport Gap Pike. Photo taken 06/00.
Continuing northward on the Newport Freeway near Prices Corner. Motorists merging onto Delaware 141 north from Centerville Road and Delaware 62 forms a third auxiliary lane for Exits 6A/B (Delaware 2 & 41 north). The center panel indicates the mileages to Delaware 48 & 100 (Lancaster Pike), Delaware 52 (Kennett Pike), and Delaware 100 (Montchanin Road). No entry exists for the intersection at Delaware 34 (Faulkland Road). Photo taken 08/05/07.
A collector/distributor roadway handles the movements between Delaware 141 northbound at Exits 6A (Delaware 2 east - Elsmere) and Exits 6B (Delaware 2 west - Newark & Delaware 41 north Lancaster). The northbound mainline reduces to one lane briefly as the freeway ends. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Exit 6A departs Delaware 141 northbound for Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) eastbound. The ramp joins a second ramp from Centerville Road northbound before ending at Kirkwood Highway. Delaware 2 enters the town limit of Elsmere 0.4 miles to the east and the city of Wilmington 2.5 miles to the east. Note the missing shields for both Delaware 2 & 41. The sign contractor for the Newport Freeway overall was somewhat sloppy by posting signs with missing shields, "Must Exit" instead of "Exit Only", and making no needed adjustments between the 1979 and 2000 signs. Photo taken 08/05/07.
The c/d roadway ends prematurely at the Exit 6B loop ramp to Delaware 2 west & 41 north (Kirkwood Highway). The junction represents the northbound beginning of Delaware 41. Delaware 2 & 41 multiplex for one half mile between the Newport Freeway and Newport Gap Pike. The state highway otherwise provides the main route between northern Delaware and the U.S. 30 corridor outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Photo taken 12/21/04.
A stub ramp remains at the end of the collector/distributor roadway over the Delaware 2 westbound ramp to Delaware 141 south. The c/d roadway forms the second northbound lane of Delaware 141 otherwise. No plans remain to extend the freeway any further north at this time. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The Newport Freeway ends and Delaware 141 becomes an at-grade facility at Woodward Road. The westbound Delaware 2 ramp to Delaware 141 north ends at a stop sign to the right. Photos taken 12/21/04 & 08/05/07.
Three northbound reassurance signs guide Delaware 141 onto Ferris Road north of Prices Corner. The four-lane arterial is undivided and shoulderless between here and junction Delaware 34 (Faulkland Road) and the speed limit reduces from 50 to 35 mph. Note the removed trees and house from the right-hand side of Delaware 141 between the 2004 and 2007 photos. Photos taken 03/28/04 & 08/05/07.
Delaware 141 narrows between the freeway end and junction Delaware 34 (Faulkland Road). This stretch of roadway is well known for accidents and near misses with its lack of turn lanes to the adjacent neighborhoods. Visible here are early signs of construction and results of condemnation for a wider right of way that will support a wider Delaware 141. Historically, the Newport Freeway was to continue northward to Delaware 34 through this stretch. Photos taken 05/17/07.
Junction Delaware 34 shield posted on Delaware 141 (Centre Road) northbound west of Elsmere. Photo taken 12/21/04.
Northbound within the intersection at Delaware 34 (Faulkland Road). Delaware 34 constitutes a short route between Duncan Road and Delaware 41 (Newport Gap Pike) and Delaware 100 (Dupont Road). The east-west highway also serves Brandywine Springs State Park. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Delaware 141 (Centre Road) widens to include full shoulders and a grass median between Delaware 34 and Delaware 48 & 100 south (Lancaster Pike). A pair of traffic lights line the 0.9 mile stretch for the Delaware Family Center/Dupont and a corporate complex. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Junction sign for Delaware 48 on the approach to Lancaster Pike north of Wilmington. Delaware 48 composes an east-west route between Delaware 41 near Hockessin and downtown Wilmington. The state route joins with Delaware 100 between Delaware 141 and South Dupont Road at the city line. Photo taken 03/28/04.
An expansive intersection facilitates the movements between Delaware 141 (Centre Road) and Delaware 48 (Lancaster Pike). Delaware 100 turns northward from Lancaster Pike onto Centre Road for a 1.5-mile overlap with Delaware 141. Until 1989 the state route followed Montchanin Road, Delaware 52 (Kennett Pike) and North Dupont Road south of Delaware 141. A change was made to bypass a residential area on North Dupont Road between Delaware 52 and 48. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Delaware 100 & 141 northbound reassurance shields posted after their merge at Delaware 48 (Lancaster Pike). Centre Road becomes Barley Mill Road at the upcoming intersection. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Barley Mill Road upgrades to a freeway between Centre Road and Montchanin Road (Delaware 100). The 0.9-mile limited access highway passes underneath the Brandywine Valley Railroad on the approach to the Delaware 52 partial-cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Northbound at the Delaware 52 southbound off-ramp to Kennett Pike and the city of Wilmington. Kennett Pike carries four overall lanes to the city line at Rising Sun Lane. There Delaware 52 name changes to Pennsylvania Avenue and descends into downtown. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Delaware 100 & 141 northbound at the loop ramp onto Delaware 52 (Kennett Pike) northbound. The state route enters Greenville just north of Delaware 100 & 141 before continuing northward to Centerville and Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania 52). Delaware 100 splits from Delaware 141 northbound at the next intersection for Montchanin Road. Photo taken 12/18/04.
A look at the 2004 reconstructed intersection of Delaware 100 & 141 with Montchanin Road east of Delaware 52 (Kennett Pike). The intersection sees the departure of Delaware 100 northbound onto Montchanin Road and the descent of Delaware 141 to the Tyler McConnell Bridge. A Delaware 92 Truck shield was installed upon completion of the project at the intersection. The truck route likely encompasses Delaware 141 north to U.S. 202 north to Naamans Road (Delaware 92). There are no Delaware 92 Truck shields posted along the route however. Photos taken 12/18/04.
The two-lane Tyler McConnell Bridge travels high above the Brandywine Creek below between Delaware 100 (Montchanin Road) and Powder Mill Road. Despite years of planning and numerous proposals, the span remains the only two-lane bottleneck along the entire Delaware 141 routing. Eventually a four-lane span will replace the overwhelmed Tyler McConnell Bridge. Photo taken 12/23/05.
Delaware 141 turns northward onto Powder Mill Road from the end of the Tyler McConnell Bridge. The intersection coincides with the entrance to the Dupont Experimental Station. Photo taken 12/23/05.
Shifting to the east of the Tyler McConnell Bridge and Brandywine Creek on Delaware 141 northbound (Powder Mill Road) near Alapocas Drive. From the east end of the bridge and entrance to the Dupont Experimental Station, Delaware 141 follows Powder Mill Road northward to Childrens Drive at Route 141 Spur. The roadway carries four lanes from the creek eastward. Photo taken 04/26/04.
Nearing the relocated intersection of Powder Mill Road (Delaware 141 north) and Childrens Drive. Delaware 141 used to follow Powder Mill Road east directly to U.S. 202 (Concord Pike). That alignment was shifted onto Route 141 Spur south to the partial interchange with U.S. 202 and Foulk Road. Photo taken 12/23/06.
Powder Mill Road was shifted from a curve to a right angle at the intersection with Route 141 Spur and Childrens Drive. Delaware 141 north continues south on Route 141 Spur. Childrens Drive spurs west to Rockland Road and the Alfred Dupont Hospital for Children; Powder Mill Road still intersects U.S. 202 (Concord Pike) directly at Murphy Road. Photo taken 12/23/06.
Leaving the signalized intersection with Childrens Drive and Powder Mill Road on Delaware 141 north (Route 141 Spur). The state route actually travels southeast at this point, looping around the Astra-Zenica campus to junction U.S. 202 and Delaware 261 (Foulk Road). Photo taken 12/23/06.
The planned signalized intersection providing an additional entrance to the Astra-Zenica campus is now open and fully operational, even when the gate is closed. Photo taken 12/29/07.
A second reassurance shield resides nearby along Delaware 141 north (Route 141 Spur south). Interstate 95 and U.S. 202 trailblazers were added to the assembly by late 2007. Photo taken 12/29/07.
New sign bridge posted along Delaware 141 (Route 141 Spur) north for the approaching junction with U.S. 202 (Concord Pike) and transition to Foulk Road. Photo taken 12/29/07.
Delaware 141 (Route 141 Spur) north at the intersection with West Park Drive. West Park Drive travels south to Rockland Road, East Park Drive, and Augustine Cut-off parallel to U.S. 202 south. East Park Drive loops underneath U.S. 202 between West Park Drive and Caruthers Lane. Photo taken 12/23/06.
Traffic interests to U.S. 202 (Concord Pike) depart Delaware 141 north via an off-ramp adjacent to the West Park Drive intersection. A second traffic light exists on the overpass above to allow motorists access onto U.S. 202 north. Photo taken 12/29/07.
Scenes pertaining to Delaware 141
Marshall Street northbound parallels Delaware 141 between the Exit 4 off-ramp of the Newport Freeway to the beginning of the Newport Gap Pike within the town of Newport. The one-way street intersects the Delaware 4 couplet of Market and Justis Streets before splitting with Newport Gap Pike. Pictured here is Marshall Street northbound at Justis Street (Delaware 4 westbound). Photo taken 12/24/04.
Marshall Street travels in the shadows of the Newport Freeway viaduct before splitting with the Newport Gap Pike ahead of its on-ramp to Delaware 141 northbound. Newport Gap Pike turns northwest alongside the Newport Freeway to Belvidere and Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road). Marshall Street continues two more blocks to the right before ending. Photo taken 12/21/04.
The northbound component of Newport Gap Pike parallels Delaware 141 above the Newport Freeway between Marshall Street and Centerville Road at junction Delaware 62 (Boxwood Road). An on-ramp to Delaware 141 north departs Newport Gap Pike ahead of its intersection with Highland Avenue. Photo taken 12/21/04.

The construction of the Newport Freeway resulted in an underpass for Centerville Road at Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway). Access between the two highways occurs via Greenbank Road and Albertson Boulevard. A guide sign directs Delaware 2 west & 41 northbound drivers onto Greenbank Road. The traffic light ahead also brings Delaware 141 southbound traffic onto Centerville Road and Delaware 2 east. Photo taken 04/23/04.
Replaced Eagle traffic signals at the intersection of Greenbank Road and Albertson Boulevard. Greenbank Road continues westward to junction Delaware 41 (Newport Gap Pike) from here. Albertson Boulevard leaves the residential area to the north to Delaware 2 & 41 (Kirkwood Highway) and the Prices Corner shopping center exit. Photo taken 01/00.
Powder Mill Road straddles the east bank of the Brandywine Creek between New Bridge Road and the Rising Sun Bridge and Delaware 141 (Barley Mill Road) and the Tyler McConnell Bridge. The two-lane back road is composes a short cut between North Wilmington and Delaware 141. Pictured here is an old shield assembly for the upcoming intersection of Powder Mill Road with Delaware 141 (Barley Mill Road) and the Dupont Experimental Station entrance (D Road).
