A Winter snowstorm blankets the intersection of Delaware 273 (Nottingham Road) and Casho Mill Road at the neighborhood of Woodmere in northwest Newark. Casho Mill Road begins to the right and links Nottingham Road with Delaware 2 Business & 896 (Elkton Road). Delrem Drive continues Casho Mill Road northward into residential areas where Windsor and Country Club Drives provide access to Delaware 896 (New London Road). Photo taken 01/00. |

Sinking toward downtown Newark and the intersection with Hillside Road (Delaware 896 south) on West Main Street eastbound. Delaware 273 east merges with Delaware 896 south at the upcoming intersection for a two block overlap to Elkton Road and Delaware Avenue. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
Delaware 273 eastbound at Delaware 896 south (Hillside Road). Hillside Road becomes Cleveland Avenue one block to the east at Delaware 896 north (New London Road). From there Cleveland Avenue provides a direct route to Delaware 2 & 72 (Kirkwood Highway) east of downtown. To the right Hillside Road becomes Barksdale Road in three blocks. Barksdale Road links the city of Newark with Appleton Road in Cecil County, Maryland. Photo taken 04/24/04. |
Delaware 273 eastbound merges with Delaware 2 Business east & 896 north at the east end of Elkton Road. The three highways join together on Delaware Avenue eastbound and intersect Orchard Road and the University of Delaware parking garage exit one block east of their merge. Photo taken 03/28/04. |
Delaware 896 northbound leaves Delaware 2 Business & 273 for College Avenue in the heart of the University of Delaware campus. The state route merges with Delaware 2 Business & 273 west (Main Street) one block to the north. College Avenue southbound constitutes old Delaware 896 between Delaware Avenue and Chestnut Hill Road. The north-south route is still traveled heavily between downtown and south Newark. Photo taken 03/28/04. |
At the end of the Delaware Avenue S curve is the signalized intersection with Tyre Avenue. The street travels north from the Christina School District bus yard across Delaware 2 Business & 273 east to East Main Street (Delaware 2 Business & 273 west). The light also slows traffic as it approaches Newark High School. Photo taken 03/28/04. |
Junction shields for Delaware 2-72-273 (Library Avenue) on Delaware Avenue eastbound at Newark High School. Delaware 2 Business ends at the upcoming intersection where Delaware 273 east joins Delaware 2 east & 72 north along Library Avenue for one block. Note the left-curve warning signs predating the 1972 opening of Library Avenue between Delaware Avenue and Wyoming Road. Photo taken 03/28/04. |
Delaware 273 eastbound turns northward onto Library Avenue. Delaware 2 & 72 overlap between Delaware 4 (Chestnut Hill Road) and Possum Park Road east of the city. Straight ahead is the entrance to College Square Shopping Center. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
The only sign bridge in all of Newark resides on Delaware 2-273 east & 72 north (Library Avenue) ahead of the West Main Street/Newark Christiana Road intersection. The assembly saw installation in 1980 to guide motorists through the upcoming junction where Delaware 273 eastbound splits from Delaware 2 & 72 to Ogletown. A greenout over "WEST" above the Delaware 2 shield displays "BUSINESS" for when Delaware 2 relocated around 1990. Photo taken 03/28/04. |
During the Summer of 2004 the left-hand panel of the sign bridge displayed on Delaware 2-72-273 (Library Avenue) northbound was replaced. The new sign includes a trailblazer for the Newark Public Library and a Delaware 2 shield with Highway Gothic Series E Font. Photo taken 08/31/04. |
Mast arm assemblies govern the movements between Delaware 2, 2 Business, 72, and 273. Delaware 2 Business begins to the left along East Main Street with Delaware 273 west. Delaware 2 & 72 continue northward onto the Robert Kirkwood Highway ahead. To the Delaware 273 travels the four-lane Newark Christiana Road to Ogletown, Interstate 95, and Christiana. Shortly after leaving Delaware 2 & 72 (Library Avenue), Delaware 273 (Newark Christiana Road) intersects the north end of Marrows Road. Marrows Road consists of a through route between Delaware 273 and Delaware 4 (Chestnut Hill Road) through the Kimberton and Brookside neighborhoods of east Newark. A lumber yard driveway ties into the signalized intersection from the north. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
A second signalized intersection governs the movements between Delaware 273 (Newark Christiana Road) and a office park road east of Marrows Road. Continuing eastward, Delaware 273 carries four overall lanes, as of 1997, to Ogletown. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
A pair of additional signalized intersections lie at industrial plants ahead of the Delaware 273 split with Ogletown Road, the pre-1997 alignment of Delaware 273. Ogletown Road acts as a frontage road to Delaware 273 briefly before turning southward under a narrow underpass of the AMTRAK Northeast Corridor. That underpass provided an obstacle for large trucks due to a low clearance and all vehicles during heavy rain events due to frequent flooding. When new Delaware 273 opened, old Olgetown Road was severed from its connection with Delaware 4 at Salem Church Road. The road otherwise still serves local interests. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
Approaching the intersection with Ruthar Drive on Delaware 273 (Newark Christiana Road) eastbound. When the new Delaware 273 alignment opened east of Ogletown Road, Ruthar Drive was extended west from Red Mill Road to the four-lane highway. The east-west road serves an industrial park between Red Mill and Harmony Roads. Additionally, a jughandle intersection was added for large trucks making a U-turn onto Delaware 273 west at Ruthar Drive. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
Delaware 273 eastbound at the Salem Church Road eastbound off-ramp to Delaware 4 (Chestnut Hill Road). Until 1997, Delaware 273 originally joined Delaware 4 via Ogletown Road to the right. At that time a new four-lane alignment opened to traffic between Ruthar Drive and Delaware 4. The previous overlap was eliminated as Delaware 273 travels over Chestnut Hill Road via a pair of 1991 completed overpasses. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
The Salem Church Road off-ramp provides all the movements to Delaware 4 (Chestnut Hill Road westbound and Ogletown Stanton Road eastbound). Salem Church Road otherwise continues southward to Chapman Road and Old Baltimore Pike. Photo taken 03/27/04. |
Beyond the Delaware 4 interchange, Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) returns to grade and intersects Brownleaf Road, a residential roadway serving adjacent subdivisions. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
Delaware 273 next intersects the south end of Harmony Road and Interstate 95 via a directional-cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
A mix of old and new traffic signals, some of which have already been replaced, handles the movements between the intersection of Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) and Harmony Road. Harmony Road ends here and dumps Pike Creek Valley traffic onto Delaware 273 for Interstate 95 from Delaware 2 (Kirkwood Highway) and points north. Photo taken 03/27/04. |
Four lanes of Delaware 273 continue over Interstate 95 as the off-ramp to the Delaware Turnpike veers right. Interstate 95 southbound interchanges with Delaware 896 (Exit 1) in four miles before encountering the Newark toll plaza. Northbound Interstate 95 continues less than one mile to junction Delaware 1 & 7. Photo taken 03/27/04. |
The northbound off-ramp sweeps northeastward to Interstate 95 with two lanes initially. That ramp joins the westbound Delaware 273 off-ramp before merging onto the Delaware Turnpike northbound. The southbound on-ramp brings traffic onto Interstate 95 ahead of the Delaware Turnpike Service Area. Photo taken 03/27/04. |
Mileage sign posted along Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) ahead of the signalized intersection with West Main Street near the village of Christiana. Delaware 273 follows a four-lane divided highway, the Christiana Bypass, around Christiana between West Main Street and junction Delaware 7 (East Main Street / Bear Christiana Road). The bypass replaced the original two-lane alignment of Delaware 273 along Main Street in the mid 1980s. The sign bridge here used to display a "TO Delaware 7 North" overhead for West Main Street. However due to the development of the Christiana Town Center, Main Street's connection with Delaware 273 was severed. Now Main Street ends at the shopping center access road, which ties into this interection. Photo taken 05/01/05. |
Eastbound reassurance shield posted between the Christiana Town Center access road (formerly Main Street) and Old Baltimore Pike along the Christiana Bypass. Access is controlled along the Christiana Bypass. Development does exist along Old Baltimore Pike. However access is restricted to the east-west roadway instead of the four-lane bypass. Photo taken 05/01/05. |
Drivers destined for Delaware 7 (Old Baltimore Pike / Stanton Christiana Road) northbound are now directed via Old Baltimore Pike east from Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) east in lieu of relocated West Main Street. Old Baltimore Pike intersects Main Street and Delaware 7 in the heart of Christiana. Photo taken 05/01/05. |
Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) crosses the Christiana River on the drive between Old Baltimore Pike and Delaware 7 (Bear Christiana Road). A freeway style guide sign advises motorists of the diamond interchange with Delaware 1 one half mile ahead. Delaware 1 interchanges with U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) three miles to the south at Tybouts Corner. Photo taken 05/01/05. |
Delaware 7 follows East Main Street south from Christiana to junction Delaware 273 (Christiana Road). From there the state highway continues south along Bear Christiana Road to Bear, Red Lion, and Wrangle Hill. The state highway is not a useful through route due to heavy development between Delaware 273 and U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway). Photo taken 05/01/05. |
A signalized intersection handles the movements between Delaware 273 and Delaware 7 in the shadow of the Delaware 1 interchange. Three sets of signals line Christiana Road within one quarter mile at Delaware 1 and 7. The southbound on-ramp to Delaware 1 departs Delaware 273 just east of the Delaware 7 intersection. The freeway continues south to St. Georges, Smyrna, and Dover from Christiana. Photo taken 05/01/05. |
The original Metroform overhead for the Delaware 1 northbound on-ramp saw replacement with a new panel spelling out Churchmans Crossing in its entirety. Planners renamed the area of land bound by Delaware 273, Delaware 1 & 7, and Delaware 2 in the early 1990s after area residents voiced their dislike of the name "Metroform". Delaware 1 progresses north from Delaware 273 to junction Delaware 7 at the Christiana Mall and Interstate 95. Photo taken 05/01/05. |
Just east of the Delaware 1 diamond interchange on Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) eastbound is the north end of Appleby Road. Appleby Road acts as a connector between Christiana Road and U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) east of Bear. The two-lane highway transitioned from a rural highway into a suburban roadway during the 1980s and 1990s. In the distance is the southern end of Delaware 37 (Airport Road). Photo taken 12/21/04. |
Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) eastbound at the southern terminus of Delaware 37 (Airport Road). Airport Road carries Delaware 37 northward to the back side of New Castle County Airport and the Corporate Commons area on the drive between Delaware 273 and U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 (Basin Road). Photo taken 05/01/05. |
Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) eastbound at the terminus of Delaware 58 (Churchmans Road). Delaware 58 comprises all of Churchmans Road between Christiana Road (Hares Corner) and Delaware 4 (Churchman's Crossing). The state route intersects Delaware 37 (Airport Road) 1.1 miles to the northwest. The entrance to nearby businesses ties into the intersection from the right. Photo taken 04/04/04. |
Eastbound reassurance shield posted along Christiana Road after the intersection with Churchmans Road. Delaware 273 dips across a tributary of Army Creek before entering Hares Corner. Photo taken 12/23/06. |
Approaching the busy intersection of Delaware 273 (Christiana Road) eastbound with U.S. 13 & 40 (Dupont Road) at Hares Corner. The congested intersection resides within the flight path of New Castle County Airport and includes runway lights directly across the crossroads. A junction U.S. 13 shield is posted ahead of the Dupont Highway meeting. U.S. 40 is generally ignored on most shields throughout the four-mile U.S. 13 & 40 overlap. Photo taken 04/04/04. |
Hanging guide signs at U.S. 13 & 40 (Dupont Highway) on Delaware 273 eastbound. Ahead Delaware 273 becomes Frenchtown Road en route to New Castle and junction Delaware 9 (Washington Avenue) & 141 (Basin Road). U.S. 13 north & 40 east travel to New Castle County Airport, junction U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 (Basins Corner) to their split at Interstate 295 (Farnhurst). Photo taken 05/01/05. |
