The Guide to Delaware State Route 286

Delaware 286 was commissioned in 1993 to provide a continuous route between Chesapeake City, Maryland and the Delaware 15 corridor. Maryland 286 (Bethel Road) becomes Delaware 286 (Bethel Church Road) two miles east of Chesapeake City. From there the state route continues a short distance to the 1990-extended Delaware 15. Development is encroaching upon both routes as suburban sprawl pervades outward from the U.S. 301 corridor between Summit Bridge and Middletown.

Western terminus
Delaware 286 (Bethel Church Road) westbound at the Cecil County, Maryland line. Like most crossings between Delaware and Maryland, a pavement change and small Maryland welcome sign are present. Maryland 286 ends at Maryland 213 (Chesapeake City Bridge) 2.5 miles to the west. Photo taken 12/21/01.
The first eastbound reassurance shield of Delaware 286 resides just beyond the state line. Bethel Church Road follows a curvy alignment between here and Delaware 15 (Choptank Road). Notice the single family home subdivision representative of the growth along the highway to the left. Photo taken 12/21/01.
Eastern Terminus
At present a stop sign governs the movements between Delaware 286 (Bethel Church Road) and Delaware 15 (Choptank Road) at the eastern terminus. As growth continues along both corridors it is likely that an upgrade to a signalized intersection in the near future will occur. Delaware 15 continues Bethel Church Road eastward 0.9 miles to U.S. 301 & Delaware 71-896 (Summit Bridge Road) to its respective terminus. Photo taken 12/21/01.
Approaching the eastern terminus of Delaware 286 (Bethel Church Road) on Delaware 15 southbound. Delaware 286 was commissioned in 1993 to link Delaware 15 (Bethel Church Road) with Maryland 286 (Bethel Road) and South Chesapeake City, Maryland. The state route continues Bethel Church Road westward from Delaware 15. Photo taken 08/10/04.
Delaware 15 southbound at its departure from Bethel Church Road onto Choptank Road. Delaware 286 westbound begins and carries Bethel Church Road 1.7 miles to the Maryland state line. South Chesapeake City, Maryland is 3.5 miles west of Delaware 15 along the Maryland 213 corridor. Although presently farmlands dominate the landscape on both Delaware 15 and 286, development is encroaching at a rapid pace throughout this part of New Castle County. Photo taken 08/10/04.
