Northbound

Delaware 896 Northbound
Delaware 896 (South College Avenue) departs the Exit 1 interchange with Interstate 95 and intersects Welsh Tract Road. The strip between the Delaware Turnpike and junction Delaware 2 & 4 is lined with the typical travel amenities including lodging, eateries, and gas stations. A "TO Delaware 896" south guide sign directs truckers to a U-turn area on Welsh Tract Road east of Delaware 896. Welsh Tract Road westbound parallels the Delaware Turnpike between Delaware 896 and Otts Chapel Road. Photo taken 04/30/04.
Overhead guide sign for the University of Delaware football stadium on Delaware 896 (South College Avenue) northbound between Welsh Tract and Chestnut Hill Roads. The sign is somewhat unnecessary as football traffic rarely grid locks the area roads. Photo taken 04/30/04.
Left-hand turns are not permitted from Delaware 896 (South College Avenue) northbound onto Chestnut Hill Road (old Delaware 4) westbound. Instead a New Jersey style jug handle is in place to carry drivers onto Chestnut Hill Road west from the right. A guide sign is in place for the configuration on the approach to the roadway. Delaware 896 saw relocation from South College Avenue between Delaware 4 and Delaware Avenue (Delaware 2 Business & 273 east) onto Christina Parkway and Elkton Road during the mid 1980s as well. Photo taken 04/17/04.

Northbound at the westward turn onto Delaware 2 & 4 westbound on Delaware 896 north. A nine ton G.V.W. limit is applied to the Christina Parkway to preclude commercial truck traffic from utilizing the roadway to bypass the nearby Delaware Turnpike toll plaza. To the east Delaware 2 & 4 follow New Chestnut Hill Road to Delaware 72 (South Chapel Street) and Ogletown. Photo taken 04/17/04.
Delaware 2 & 4 westbound join Delaware 896 north on Christina Parkway 1.4 miles between South College Avenue and Elkton Road. Pictured here are reassurance shields for the three-way overlap posted just west of the College Avenue and Chestnut Hill Road intersection. Photo taken 04/30/04.
A second set of shields resides past the south entrance to the Chrysler Assembly Plant on Christina Parkway westbound. The plant builds the Dodge Durango SUV models. Photo taken 04/30/04.
West of the second entrance to the Chrysler Assembly Plant is where Christina Parkway bottlenecks from four to two lanes to cross the AMTRAK northeastern corridor. A Delaware 4 shield is posted along on the ascent above the railroad line. Photo taken 04/30/04.
Descending toward the western terminus of Delaware 4 and Christina Parkway on Delaware 2 west & 896 north. Christina Parkway widens to four lanes before ending at Elkton Road ahead. Delaware 2 Business begins to the right and travels into downtown Newark with Delaware 896 north. Photo taken 04/30/04.
Delaware 2 westbound returns to its original alignment on Elkton Road for the one-mile drive into the state of Maryland. The state route becomes Maryland 279 at the border and intersects the Exit 109 interchange of Interstate 95 one mile south of there. An access road continues northward from Christina Parkway to Suburban Plaza Shopping Center. Photo taken 04/30/04.
Turning northeastward toward downtown Newark on Elkton Road eastbound. Delaware 2 Business & 896 share 1.7 miles of Elkton Road and the one-way couplet of West Main Street and Delaware Avenue. Photo taken 03/28/04.
A mast arm traffic light assembly was installed at the south end of Casho Mill Road on Elkton Road during 2001. The signal was put in place for the left-hand turn from Delaware 2 Business east & 896 northbound onto Casho Mill Road north. Casho Mill Road itself straddles west Newark between Elkton Road and Delaware 273 (Nottingham Road). Photo taken 03/28/04.

Delaware 896 northbound leaves Delaware 2 Business & 273 for College Avenue in the heart of the University of Delaware campus. The state route merges with Delaware 2 Business & 273 west (Main Street) one block to the north. College Avenue southbound constitutes old Delaware 896 between Delaware Avenue and Chestnut Hill Road. The north-south route is still traveled heavily between downtown and south Newark. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The traffic signal at South College Avenue (Delaware 896 northbound) ties into the adjacent south end of North College Avenue. A mast arm and 3M signals are posted for the intersection and associated crosswalk. North College Avenue leaves West Main Street northward to Cleveland Avenue and White Clay Creek State Park by way of Creek Road. Photo taken 03/27/04.
A three-way split occurs at the west end of downtown where Delaware 2 Business joins Delaware 273 east & 896 south on Elkton Road. Delaware 273 westbound continues West Main Street along the middle prong. To the right Delaware 896 northbound travels New London Road toward the Maryland and Pennsylvania state lines. The CSX Railroad line crosses both West Main Street and New London Road just north of the partition. Photo taken 03/27/04.
