Interstate 295 in Delaware provides a major corridor between the Southeast United States, the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area, and the Delmarva Peninsula and the state of New Jersey, New York City, and the New England states. The freeway is heavily traveled as the link between Interstate 95 (Delaware Turnpike) and the New Jersey Turnpike. During peak travel hours, Interstate 295 northbound motorists often clog Interstate 95 between Delaware 141 (Exit 5) and Delaware 1 & 7 (Exit 4). During holiday travel periods traffic also slows at the Delaware Memorial Bridge and New Jersey Turnpike toll plazas. The freeway constitutes only four lanes between Interstate 95 and U.S. 13 & 40 (Dupont Highway) and eight lanes between Farnhurst (U.S. 13) and New Jersey 49 (Broadway) in Deepwater, New Jersey. U.S. 40 joins the freeway between the Dupont Highway and the New Jersey Turnpike.

Interstate 295 & U.S. 40 utilize the suspension bridge between Penns Grove, New Jersey and New Castle, Delaware. The twin bridges carry eight overall lanes between the two states. Lane control signs are found along both bridges to close lanes as needed during accidents, congestion, or construction situations. Photos taken 10/04/04 by Carter Buchanan. |

Touching down in the state of Delaware ahead of the Delaware Memorial Bridge toll plaza on Interstate 295 south & U.S. 40 west. All passenger vehicles are charged a $3.00 toll at the plaza ahead. Large Variable Message Signs are found throughout the length of both Interstates 95 and 295 to advise of traffic congestion, construction, or accident related delays. Photo taken 10/04/04. |

The Delaware Memorial Bridge toll plaza resides on Interstate 295 southbound between the span and the Delaware 9 (New Castle Avenue) cloverleaf interchange. Pictured here is departure of the New Castle Avenue collector/distributor roadway. Delaware 9 links the city of Wilmington with the town of New Castle just west of the Delaware River itself. Photo taken 10/04/04. |

A cloverleaf ramp carries Interstate 295 southbound & U.S. 40 westbound drivers onto Delaware 9 (New Castle Avenue) southbound. The exit serves the Delaware War Memorial at the intersection of New Castle Avenue and Cherry Lane. The memorial honors those New Jersey and Delaware veterans who died during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm. Photo taken 03/27/04. |

Delaware 9 gore point sign at the New Castle Avenue southbound loop ramp. The full cloverleaf interchange resides in tight quarters between commercial and residential areas to the north and south of the freeway. The interchange saw improvements between 1998 and 2001 including a bridge redecking and new asphalt pavement for the associated ramps. Photo taken 05/19/07. |

U.S. 40 and Interstate 295 prepare to split between the Delaware 9 cloverleaf and the U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) interchange at Farnhurst. The four southbound lanes of the freeway partition between two for Interstate 295 and two for U.S. 13 south & U.S. 40 west. The Farnhurst interchange saw reconstruction between 2001 and 2003. The ramps from Interstate 295 south to the Dupont Highway were realigned to provide a smoother transition to U.S. 13 below. Photo taken 03/27/04. |

Interstate 295 and U.S. 40 part ways at the Farnhurst interchange. U.S. 13 & U.S. 40 travel the Dupont Highway southward four miles to State Road. From there U.S. 40 turns westward along the Pulaski Highway to Bear, Glasgow, and Elkton, Maryland. U.S. 13 continues on a southward trajectory to the SR 1 Turnpike, Odessa, Smyrna, Dover, Salisbury, Maryland and Hampton Roads, Virginia. The ramp is a pivotal movement in the Delmarva Peninsula traffic movement. The city of Norfolk is a 270 mile drive south on U.S. 13. Photo taken 05/19/07. |

Depicted here is the same sign bridge and scene displayed in the above photographed 35 years prior. Two major historical points here: 1) U.S. 301, the lengthy highway between the state of Delaware and Sarasota, Florida, saw its original terminus at the Farnhurst interchange. U.S. 301 remained on Interstate 295 area guide signs for the U.S. 13 interchange until 1996. 2) U.S. 202, another substantially long route between the Small Wonder and Bangor, Maine, also saw its terminus at the same interchange. Note that both federal highways were signed for the Dupont Highway off-ramp. U.S. 202 was relocated to Interstate 95 and Delaware 141 by 1984. Before that relocation, U.S. 202 saw truncation to the intersection of Concord Avenue and Market Street in the East Lawn section of Wilmington. It is unclear when that truncation occurred. At the time of this photograph, Interstate 495 was just a proposed route and therefore there is no mentioning of it on the Interstate 295 panels. The Wilmington Bypass opened to traffic in 1979. Interstate 295 prepares to enter the Interstate 95 & 495 junction near Newport. The ramps for the Dupont Highway partition to the right and descend to their respective directions. Long gone are the control cities of Annapolis, Baltimore, and Norfolk. Those points are replaced with the DRBA favored New Castle Airport and Dover. Note the airport trailblazer between the U.S. 13 & 40 shields as well. Photo taken 05/19/07. |

Two auxiliary lanes add to the fold of Interstate 295 southbound between Farnhurst and the southern terminus. From the left is the Dupont Highway northbound on-ramp merge. On the right traffic from U.S. 13 southbound forms the exit-only lane for Interstate 495 northbound. The next three set of Interstate 95 southbound panels are the only three within the state to retain Delaware Turnpike trailblazers. Those signs were installed in 1995. Photo taken 03/22/04. |

Original concrete remains in place at the Interstate 295 southern terminus. Departing to the right is the northbound on-ramp to Interstate 495 (Wilmington Bypass). The bypass provides four interchanges for the city of Wilmington itself. Otherwise the mainline continues to the left for Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 and Delaware 141 (Newport Freeway). Photo taken 03/22/04. |
 |
The northbound ramp to Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 leaves Interstate 295 southbound. 2.7 miles to the north is the first of three downtown Wilmington area interchanges at Delaware 4 (Maryland Avenue). Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 bisect the city between Adams and Jackson Street. The two part ways at Exit 8 in north Wilmington. The northbound mainline of the said pair travels above Interstate 295 southbound at the gore point. Photo taken 03/22/04. |

Continuing on Interstate 295 southbound toward the Interstate 95 southbound ramp and Delaware 141 northbound ramp. A mileage sign resides past the gore for Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 north for Newport, Newark, and Baltimore. A guide sign also resides on the northbound ramp to Interstate 95 with Wilmington (3) and Philadelphia (34) displayed. Photo taken 03/27/04. |

Diagrammatical overhead for the upcoming off-ramp to Delaware 141 (Newport Freeway) northbound. Delaware 141 exists as a four-lane freeway between Interstate 95 & U.S. 202 and Delaware 2 & 41 (Kirkwood Highway) at Prices Corner. The limited access highway cuts a swath through Newport itself before becoming Centre Road north of Kirkwood Highway. The control city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania relates to the Delaware 141 connection with Delaware 41. Delaware 41 becomes Pennsylvania 41, a busy truck and through route between the Diamond State and junction U.S. 30 at Gap, Pennsylvania. U.S. 30 links Pennsylvania 41 with the city of Lancaster from there. Photo taken 08/07/04. |

The ramp to Delaware 141 northbound departs the southbound lanes from the left. Drivers utilizing the connection merge onto the Newport Freeway just ahead of the Interstate 95 southbound cloverleaf ramp (Exit 3B) of Delaware 141. Photo taken 05/19/07. |
 |
A second sign bridge is in place for the "Exit 5" off-ramp to Delaware 141 north. The numbering convention of Interstate 95 applies Exit 5B/5A for the Delaware 141 respective ramps. Interstate 495 also sees a ramp for Delaware 141 that is signed as Exit 5. The pull-through panel indicates the upcoming left-hand merge onto Interstate 95 south. Photo taken 05/19/07. |
 |
The ramps for Interstate 95 south and Delaware 141 diverge. Interstate 95 is officially the Delaware Turnpike between Exit 5 and the Maryland state line. However the only tolled section of the highway is the three-mile stretch between Exit 1 (Delaware 896) and Exit 109 (Maryland 279) in Cecil County. Photo taken 05/19/07. |

Interstate 295 draws to a close at the southbound merge onto Interstate 95. The confluence of the ramps from Interstate 295, 495, U.S. 202, and Delaware 141 onto Interstate 95 southbound creates an almost daily bottleneck here. It is not uncommon to encounter long traffic delays on both Interstate 295 and 95 southbound through the marshy area. To the right is the U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 southbound off-ramp of Interstate 95. There is no direct access from Interstate 295 south to this ramp. However motorists using the Delaware 141 northbound ramp to the left can use the Exit 3B cloverleaf ramp of the Newport Freeway to Interstate 95 southbound to use the U.S. 202 & Delaware 141 southbound ramp.
