The Guide to the Puncheon Run Connector in Delaware

Puncheon Run Connector

Around New Years Day of 2001, the Puncheon Run Connector was finally opened to traffic. The Puncheon Run Connector consists of a freeway between the SR 1 Turnpike via Exit 97 and U.S. 13 south of Dover. This limited access segment allows travelers bound for southern Delaware, Salisbury, Maryland, and Norfolk, Virginia convenient access to the Dupont Hwy (U.S. 13). The name of the roadway derives from the small creek that parallels it - Puncheon Run. The roadway has a set of exit numbers independent of the main SR 1 Turnpike.

The Puncheon Run Connector provides a free limited-access route between U.S. 13 and Bay Road (former U.S. 113) through south Dover.

Puncheon Run Connector Eastbound
The beginning of the Puncheon Run Connector eastbound as it departs U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) northbound in south Dover. Since the four-lane freeway receives no number, a pair of trailblazers takes the place of a reassurance shield for Delaware 1 and Interstate 95. Photo taken 04/13/04.
A partial cloverleaf interchange exists on the Puncheon Run Connector for Bay Road (old U.S. 113) in East Dover. Depicted here is the one-mile guide sign for the Exit 2A/B interchange. Visible to the right is the namesake of the freeway, the Puncheon Run. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07./td>
The 0.50-mile guide sign for Bay Road resides near the St. Jones River crossing on the Connector eastbound. Exit 2 signs two months after the truncation of U.S. 113 was made official retained shields for the federal highway. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Trailblazers partition traffic bound for Delaware 1 south onto Exit 2A (Bay Road south) from the Puncheon Run Connector east that defaults onto the SR 1 Turnpike north. Bay Road merges with Delaware 1 at Exit 95 (junction Delaware 10). Photo taken 08/05/07.
The Puncheon Run Connector receives its own set of exit numbers independent of the SR 1 Turnpike mainline. Exit 2A carries eastbound motorists onto historic U.S. 113 (Bay Road) southbound for Dover A.F.B. and Delaware 10 (Lebanon Road). Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Traffic that does not utilize the Exit 2B cloverleaf ramp onto Bay Road northbound defaults on the SR 1 Turnpike northbound. There are no exits for northbound travelers between here and the Smyrna-Dover Bypass toll plaza at kilometer post 100. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.

Puncheon Run Connector Westbound
There are no westbound exits along the Puncheon Run Connector between the split with Delaware 1 south and the end at U.S. 13 (DuPont Highway). Pictured here is the bridge over the St. Jones River. Photo taken 08/05/07.
No sooner than just west of the on-ramp from Bay Road (old U.S. 113) is the one-mile guide sign signaling the end of the Puncheon Run Connector westbound. The freeway is signed as either "TO U.S. 13" or "TO Delaware 1" at all access points and on the mainline. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Several signs advise motorists of the impending conclusion of the Puncheon Run Connector. The freeway provides through traffic with a bypass of Dover for the long distance control cities of Salisbury, Maryland and Norfolk, Virginia. Before the 2001 opening of the highway, motorists were directed southward on U.S. 113 & Delaware 1 to Delaware 10 (Lebanon Road) westbound. An Delaware 10 Alternate route was created in the 1990s to help carry traffic to/from Delaware 1 and U.S. 13. Photos taken 08/05/07.
A ramp is available for drivers bound for downtown Dover via U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) northbound from the Puncheon Run Connector. Traffic otherwise defaults onto southbound ahead. Photo taken 08/05/07.
U.S. 13 shields posted at the gore point between the north and southbound ramps. The end of the freeway resides just west of the south end of U.S. 13 Alternate and former U.S. 113 Alternate (State Street). A Bay Bridge trailblazer directs motorists southward to Delaware 10 west for the Chesapeake Bay crossing at Annapolis. A second trailblazer mentions the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel for U.S. 13 south. Photo taken 08/05/07.
