Northbound - Dover to State Road
Known as the Dupont Highway or Parkway from Wilmington to the Maryland state line,
U.S. 13 composes the longest signed highway within the state of Delaware. U.S. 13 enters the state
north of Salisbury, Maryland at the town of Delmar. From there the federal highway continues northward
to Seaford, Laurel, Greenwood, Harrington, Camden, Dover, Smyrna, Odessa, Wilmington, and Claymont.
The federal highway crosses the Pennsylvania state line via Philadelphia Pike into Marcus Hook,
Pennsylvania. U.S. 13 varies between four to six lanes throughout the entire state.

U.S. 13 (DuPont Highway) shifts to the east of its original alignment at Fieldsboro to accommodate the alignment of the SR 1 Turnpike. The two four-lane roadways parallel each other closely within the vicinity of the Old State Road intersection. Photo taken 05/15/05. |

Just north of the Appoquinimink River crossing, U.S. 13 enters the town of Odessa. There the federal highway intersects Delaware 299 (Main Street), an east-west route between Delaware 9 and the Maryland state line. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
 |
Delaware 299 (Main Street) interchanges with Delaware 1 (Exit 136) at the western edge of Odessa. The state route otherwise continues a short distance through growing suburbs to Middletown and junction U.S. 301. Delaware 299 east travels nearby to its end at Mathews Corner. Photo taken 05/15/05. |

Northbound reassurance shield posted along 5th Street north of the intersection with Delaware 299 (Main Street). U.S. 13 partitions briefly into a one-way street couplet through Odessa. Southbound follows 6th Street one block to the west. Photo taken 05/15/05. |

5th and 6th Streets combine and U.S. 13 passes underneath the SR 1 Turnpike on its departure of Odessa. Photo taken 05/15/05. |

Bayview Road intersects U.S. 13 (DuPont Highway) south of Boyds Corner. Bayview Road travels west from Delaware 9 (Silver Run Road) to U.S. 13 at Greylag Road, a suburban street. Vance Neck Road ties into Bayview Road east of the turnpike, an alternation from its original intersection with U.S. 13 made by the construction of Delaware 1. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
 |
Approaching the increasingly busy intersection between U.S. 13 and Delaware 896 (Boyds Corner Road) and Pole Bridge Road at Boyds Corner. Delaware 896 begins here and travels west to junction U.S. 301 & Delaware 71 at Mt. Pleasant. Pole Bridge Road continues Boyds Corner Road east to Port Penn Road and Thorntown. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
 |
A diamond interchange joins Pole Bridge Road with the adjacent SR 1 Turnpike east of the U.S. 13 and Delaware 896 intersection. Explosive growth associated with Middletown and other area developments has drastically changed the cosmetics of the areas in and around Boyds Corner. Subdivisions now occupy lands along both Delaware 896 and Pole Bridge Road nearby, adding to the increasing daily traffic counts on both Delaware 1 and U.S. 13. Historically, Delaware 896 west to U.S. 301 at Mt. Pleasant represents a former alignment of U.S. 301. Photo taken 05/15/05. |

U.S. 13 northbound reassurance shield and mileage sign listing the distances to both Wilmington and the Delaware Memorial Bridge. U.S. 13 & 301 used to share pavement from Boyds Corner northward to Farnhurst (junction Interstate 295). A plan is underway to construct a toll road for U.S. 301 that may redirect the route northeast to Delaware 1 near the Biddles Corner toll plaza nearby. Photo taken 05/15/05. |

Nearing the northbound on-ramp to the SR 1 Turnpike at South St. Georges. U.S. 13 overlapped with Delaware 1 across the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal between 1995 and 1998. However when it was decided to keep the St. Georges Bridge open, U.S. 13 returned to its Dupont Highway alignment through St. Georges. Guide signs for the upcoming ramp still referred to the U.S. 13 overlap with the turnpike through 2004. Photo taken 05/15/05. |

U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) northbound at the intersection with Port Penn Road at Biddles Corner. The SR 1 Turnpike parallels the Dupont Highway closely between Odessa (pop. 286) and the St. Georges Bridge. Photo taken 08/10/04. |

Access to the SR 1 Turnpike and the cable-stayed Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Bridge allows the span to remain a free crossing as mandated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Delaware 1 increases with commuter traffic every year as development south of the canal increases. Thus the on-ramp here onto the turnpike provides a pivotal movement in the daily traffic movements of the Wilmington metropolitan area. Photos taken 08/10/04 & 05/15/05. |

The left-hand turn lane onto Delaware 1 northbound is governed by a traffic signal. The "T" shaped signals in place allow for a turn after a complete stop when the red arrows flash. After a set amount of time the flashing arrows will be replaced by a red ball to stop traffic on U.S. 13 southbound for the green cycle. U.S. 13 enters South St. Georges ahead. Delaware 1 crosses the canal and intersects U.S. 13 again with Delaware 72 at Wrangle Hill. Photos taken 08/10/04 & 05/15/05. |

At the village of South St. George, U.S. 13 crosses the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal via the 1950s constructed St. Georges Bridge. The four-lane steel arch bridge underwent a repainting and redecking in 2001 and remains in service after several years of debate as to whether or not it should be dismantled. Lightly traveled, the bridge joins the split town of St. Georges and offers motorists an alternative to the nearby Delaware 1 Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Bridge. Photos taken 04/17/04. |

Approaching the junction with Delaware 7 & 72 on U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) northbound at Wrangle Hill. The upcoming intersection represents the departure point of U.S. 13 for the SR 1 Turnpike. Until 1995 U.S. 13 continued northward to Tybout's Corner via the four lane Dupont Highway. However the construction of the Delaware 1 Turnpike overtook part of the original roadway between Delaware 7 (Bear Corbitt Road) and Tybout's Corner. Photo taken 04/17/04. |
 |
Delaware 7 saw extension from its original south end over the Dupont Highway to Wrangle Hill in 1995. The state highway begins at the upcoming intersection in the absence of U.S. 13. Delaware 72 meanwhile travels east-west between Delaware City and the Pulaski Highway (U.S. 40). Photo taken 04/17/04. |
 |
U.S. 13 turns westward onto Delaware 72 (Wrangle Hill Road) briefly to the adjacent Exit 152 diamond interchange of the SR 1 Turnpike. From there U.S. 13 joins Delaware 1 to Tybout's Corner. Delaware 72 arcs from the junction northwestward to Newark. Photo taken 04/17/04. |
 |
The once bustling intersection now sits somewhat quiet at Wrangle Hill. Delaware 72 traverses rural environs eastward to Delaware 9 near the Texaco Industrial complex and town of Delaware City (pop. 1,453). Westward Wrangle Hill Road is succumbing to suburban sprawl, but the highway remains open in places. Delaware 7 draws northward from U.S. 13 to the village of Red Lion in sleepy fashion. The four-lane Dupont Highway is vastly over capacity now that the bulk of area traffic is on the nearby six-lane turnpike. So it appears that for the immediate future the intersection will remain under used. Photo taken 04/17/04. |

Closer look at the U.S. 13 & Delaware 72 shield assembly at Wrangle Hill. U.S. 13 & Delaware 1 share four kilometers of pavement between here and Tybout's Corner. The six-lane freeway overtakes old U.S. 13 between Delaware 7 and the Exit 156 trumpet interchange. A pair of segments from the old highway remain to the west of the new freeway. The northbound carriageway of old U.S. 13 is no longer in service. However the southbound carriageway serves local interests with two-way traffic now. Photo taken 04/17/04. |
| See Delaware 1 North (St. Georges to Churchman's Crossing) for photos covering the U.S. 13 overlap with Delaware 1 between Wrangle Hill and Tybouts Corner. |
 |
Northbound after the partition with Delaware 1 and the intersections with Delaware 71 and Hamburg Road east / Bear Tybouts Road west. This mileage sign references New Jersey in place of Delaware Memorial Bridge, a rareity in the First State. U.S. 13 travels through growing suburban areas developed only in the late 1990s between Delaware 1 and Schafer Boulevard. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
 |
U.S. 13 (DuPont Highway) passes under the Norfolk Southern Railroad before its merge with U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) state State Road. The two four-lane highways combine to form an eight-lane roadway northward to junction Interstate 295 at Farnhurst. Photo taken 05/15/05. |
