The Guide to U.S. Highway 13 Southbound in Delaware (Dover to Maryland)

Southbound - Dover to Maryland

Dover Map - AARoads

U.S. 13 (DuPont Highway) passes Dover Mall and Dover Downs on the southward drive through developing north Dover. U.S. 13 Alternate splits at Silver Lake near Delaware State University for downtown, while Dupont Highway stays east as a commercial arterial.

U.S. 13 Southbound
Traveling southbound on the Dupont Highway within the capital city of Dover. Pictured here is the junction shield for Delaware 8 (Division Street) and the first of two sign bridges for the former split of U.S. 113 (Bay Road) southbound from U.S. 13. The right-hand overhead was a bit premature as U.S. 13 does not veer southwesterly for another half mile. Note the sign replacements that remove U.S. 113 from the left and Norfolk from the right. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
Delaware 8 provides the main east-west arterial through the city of Dover. East of town the state route travels Little Creek Road to junction Delaware 9 at Little Creek (pop. 195) itself. A new half-diamond interchange opened at the SR 1 Turnpike for Delaware 8 in 2002. Photo taken 04/13/04.
U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) southbound at Delaware 8 (Division Street). Delaware 8 westbound travels through the heart of downtown Dover. West of the city Delaware 8 takes Hartley and Halltown Roads to the Maryland state line at Marydel. In conjunction with Maryland 454 and Maryland 302, Delaware 8 links the state capital with U.S. 301 for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and points west. Find the photocop assemblies in the second photo! Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
The former southbound beginning of U.S. 113 on U.S. 13 southbound at Bay Road. DelDOT truncated U.S. 113 southward from Dover to Milford officially in February of 2004. The state contended that the overlap between the federal route and Delaware 1 between Dover A.F.B. and the city of Milford was confusing and economically costly. Therefore DelDOT petitioned AASHTO to remove U.S. 113 along the overlapped portion of Bay Road between Milford and Dover during the Summer of 2003. Initially rejected by AASHTO, the request was granted at the February 2004 meeting. Photos taken 04/13/04 & 08/05/07.
A view of the historic northbound end of U.S. 113 as seen four years earlier. Bay Road links U.S. 13 with the SR 1 Turnpike at Dover A.F.B. The four-lane highway provides the main route between Dover and the Delaware Beaches by way of Delaware 1. U.S. 13 meanwhile turns southwestward to Camden, Harrington, Greenwood, Bridgeville, Seaford, Laurel, and Delmar in southern Delaware. The federal highway is still 200 miles plus north of the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Photo taken 01/00.
U.S. 13 (DuPont Highway) continues beyond the partition with Bay Road to Public Safety Boulevard, across the St. Jones River, and through the intersection with Roosevelt Boulevard before meet State Street at this signalized intersection. State Street travels south out of downtown Dover as U.S. 13 Alternate. Former U.S. 113 Alternate used to turn from Dupont Highway south onto State Street south for its return to Magnolia. The alternate route represented the original U.S. 113 and this intersection was the historic north end. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Southbound reassurance shield posted after the intersection with State Street. U.S. 13 Alternate parallels the Dupont Highway nearby on Governors Avenue. Photo taken 08/05/07.
A short distance separates Dover from the nearby towns of Camden and Wyoming. U.S. 13 meets Delaware 10 (Camden Wyoming Avenue) at Camden east of Wyoming. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Southbound U.S. 13 at the split with Southbee Drive. South bee Drive provides a direct connection to U.S. 13 Alternate (Governors Avenue) through the Rodney Village community. Photo taken 08/05/07.
Approaching the intersection with Webbs Lane south of Dover on U.S. 13. Traffic from the SR 1 Turnpike merges onto the Dupont Highway behind the camera from the four-lane Puncheon Run Connector. The freeway links U.S. 13 with the SR 1 Turnpike and Bay Road to allow through traffic a bypass of the city. Photo taken 04/13/04.
U.S. 13 southbound at Main Street outside of Bridgeville (pop. 1,436). Main Street carries U.S. 13 Business through downtown Bridgeville and once carried the mainline of Delaware 404 (as pictured here). However a relocation of Delaware 404 onto Newton Road north of town and U.S. 13 for 2.5 miles between Newton Road and the Seashore Highway leaves Main Street as Delaware 404 Business. Delaware 404 Business follows all of the former mainline routing in Bridgeville via Main Street, Market Street, and the Seashore Highway northwest of town. Photo taken by JP Nasiatka (09/04/01).

U.S. 13 returns to rural environs on the trek between Bridgeville and Seaford. Pictured here is a Delaware 20 guide sign for Seaford that is posted south of the U.S. 13 Business & Delaware 404-404 Business intersection at Main Street. U.S. 13 & Delaware 20 share a one mile overlap at outside of Seaford (pop. 6,699). Photo taken 04/13/04.
Two miles south of Bridgeville is the Delaware 18 (Bowdens Garage Road) junction with U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway). Delaware 18 provides the main route between U.S. 13 and the city of Federalsburg, Maryland. The highway once traveled Federalsburg Road into Bridgeville itself but was relocated to an alignment south of town in the 1950s. Photo taken 04/13/04.
Eastbound shield for Delaware 18 posted ahead of the Bowdens Garage Road intersection on U.S. 13 south. Delaware 18 merges with Delaware 404 1.5 miles to the east. From there the tandem follows the Seashore Highway to the county seat of Georgetown and junction U.S. 9. Before the U.S. 9 extension into the state of Delaware in the 1970s, Delaware 18 continued east of Georgetown to Five Points (junction Delaware 14 at the time) and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. U.S. 9 overtook all of Delaware 18 east of Georgetown. Photo taken 04/13/04.
Delaware 18 westbound meanders 7.5 miles westward to the Maryland state line. The state route becomes Maryland 318 upon entering Caroline County. Three miles west of the border is the town of Federalsburg. Maryland 318 and Maryland 313 bypass the community to the south and west. Photo taken 04/13/04.
Nearing the southern terminus of U.S. 9 outside the town of Laurel (pop. 3,668) in southwest Sussex County. U.S. 9 travels 12 miles southwest out of Georgetown via the County Seat Highway to its conclusion at U.S. 13 (Dupont Highway) east of Laurel. Georgetown Road continues from the intersection one half mile westward to Seaford Road and downtown. U.S. 9 between U.S. 13 and Delaware 18 in Georgetown constitutes the historic routing of Delaware 28. Photo taken by JP Nasiatka (09/04/01).
U.S. 13 southbound at the Maryland and Delaware state line in Delmar (pop. 1,407). Delaware/Maryland 54 straddles the border between Delmar and junction Delaware 26. Known as Delaware Maryland State Line Road, State Route 54 sees Maryland 54 shields in the eastbound direction and Delaware shields in the westbound direction. Photo taken by JP Nasiatka (09/04/01).
The first southbound U.S. 13 reassurance shield posted within the state of Maryland. U.S. 13 is known as the Ocean Highway between the Delaware state line and Norfolk Virginia. The designation also applies to U.S. 13 northward to New Castle but is rarely used within the Diamond State. The Ocean Highway concept relates to the idea of the highway as a touring route in the 1950s and 60s. U.S. 17 continues the Ocean Highway moniker from Norfolk into the Southeastern States. Photo taken by JP Nasiatka (09/04/01).
