An interesting thought that I just had regarding this (perhaps better for 'fictional/fantasy highways' discussion) would be that if an 'I-41' ever comes on the scene and it would follow one of the chatted about western bypass routings, assuming that it would cross back to the current US 41 corridor near the south end of IN 641, that IN 641 could then become an 'even' 3DI for I-70.

Isn't that part of the legislated I-69?  They could number it I-69W.

No it isn't , and let's hope not!  US 41 was one of the original considerations for the Evansville-Indianapolis I-69 routing, but was dropped when the present alignment was adopted.

US highways, not Interstate.

Interstate suffixes were dropped except for the two Interstate 35 branches in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. and Dallas/Fort Worth, TX. Now with Interstate 69's construction in Texas, they are being brought back. WTF?

When the Feds pay for 3 trans-border highways instead of just one, all because Texas says they need them, well, you learn to accommodate.

I think its ridiculous as well.

They opened up the roundabouts at the 641 / 46 interchange today.

Is SR 641 open from US 41 to I-70? I also heard the roundabouts were open, but wasn't sure if the spur was completely open for traffic.

Not yet. It should be completely open by December.

Life in Paradise

I've watched this project creep along since my middle son was a Freshman in High School (2009).  He's now in his 5th year in college.  With I-69 progressing, this road is no longer much of an interest anymore.  I always said that they needed to hire a second employee to do the work, rather than do the whole project with just one road worker... :spin:

Your son went from a freshman in HS to his 5th year of college in 7 years?

OK, the first part of his freshman year was 2008 and he has just started his 5th year.  If I could see him getting out of college in 7 years, I might have time to think and figure correctly.

I'm from the Haute and seem to recall that the first work on the bypass started when I was in high school, back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I think there was a gas station where the 41-641 interchange is that was demolished in 1990 when the project started. Is that right?

Yes, it was a pretty large one if I remember correctly, kind of an old school truck stop. I think there was a motel there as part of the complex.

this thing was in the works for how long exactly?

Since the late 1980s at least; a west-end bypass from roughly the same starting point, around West Terre Haute, and meeting up with Indiana 63 north of TH was proposed in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Part of the planning for the current bypass seems to be part of the larger discussion about routing I-69 from Indy to Evansville.

i wished they'd just end 46 at the 641 interchange.

Same. It's kind of stupid to have it run concurrent with 641 and US 40. I really don't understand the point. They've already renamed US 40 (former 46) from I-70 to Wabash Ave, "Old SR 46". If it's "Old SR 46" then it's dumb to also have it signed as "SR 46". I can kind of understand having 641 and 46 run concurrent up to I-70, but I would honestly prefer that SR 46 ends at SR 641. Perhaps on the BGS's they could put "South SR 641 / TO East SR 46" with Bloomington and Evansville as the control cities.

Best case scenario, IMHO, would be to re-route 40 through the city on Wabash, like it always was, then route 46 and 641 up to the old 46-40 intersection near Rose Hulman.
That won't happen, so i think 46 should be signed to I-70, since it goes to Bloomington, but there is no need to extend it beyond I-70, because it would not intersect with any other highway until it reached, what, SR 340?

Interstate 69 Fan

I heard that a section of SR 641 opened up along SR 46. Is there 641 signage? And is there any evidence what so ever of SR 641 along 46?
Apparently I’m a fan of I-69.  Who knew.
