AR 100/MO 88 or US 71?

Originally, US 71 ran from Bentonville west on what is now AR 72, then north on AR 59/MO 59 to meet back up at Anderson.  What is now US 71 and 71 Business between Bentonville and Anderson was mostly AR 100 and MO 88.  When that setup existed, which was considered the through route?  I think the 100/88 route was built later than the 72/59 road, so I expect it was built to a more modern standard.  Were there big billboards saying "Take 88 to 100?"

US71

Likely 71, since MO 88 ended in Lanagan, which later became 71.  The Pineville-Anderson section was built circa 1970 IIRC.

Oh, and 71 originally ran west to Centerton then north to what's now 72. But that only lasted a couple years.  :coffee:

What evidence do you have?  I've never seen this on any map.

I notice on a 1936 Benton County map that the 102 route is shown as FA and the 71 route is not.  I bet it was originally routed down the straight AR 102 route but Bentonville whined and got it routed through town and down the curvy substandard AR 72.

It shows US 71 along Walnut and into Bentonville as an FAS and AR 102 and AR 94 as FAP.  This seems to indicate that AHTD was planning on rerouting US 71 off of Walnut and onto AR 102.

Possible. One would probably have to ask AHTD (if anyone has a clue).

Interesting that the FAP that's N. 8th St eventually became part of US 62 (now part of AR 94)
