I looked up the Monroe Hill ramps. You can still one that looks good, but there are no signs. Is this road not used for trucks, or has it been decommissioned? Thanks.

The truck traffic really no longer exists since the Yankee Rowe Nuclear Power Plant was decommissioned in the early 90's. It's completely torn down by now. Last I knew the bridge into the town of Monroe is closed, so the road isn't technically a through way anymore.

I took a bike ride out there 8 years ago, and one of them was signed, one was unsigned, and one looked liked it was so poorly maintained that mother nature was reclaiming it. It was also the most terrifying descent I had on a bicycle, it averages about a 14% grade top to bottom with a few sharp curves.
Thanks

PA has a total of six on US 30 between McConnellsburg and Breezewood.
I-376 has some between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and I-279. I believe there is 3.
I think there's 2 on US 11/15 north of Harrisburg to Duncannon.
There are several on US 30 between McConnellsburg, but I don't think there are any on I-376 on either side of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, and there aren't any on US 11/15 north of Harrisburg.

Here are the one that I can remember:
I-176 approaching the PA Turnpike
PA 93 approaching US 209 near Jim Thorpe
US 322 east of Potters Mills
US 30 east of Breezewood (several)
old US 422 east of Kittanning

Are there any:
on I-376 west of the Ft Pitt Tunnel?
US 219 south of Ridgway?
PA 8/US 62 approaching Franklin?
US 40 east of Uniontown?
US 30 EAST of McConnellsburg?
US 30 west of Bedford?
US 30 east of Ligonier?
US 119 approaching Punxsutawney?
None on US 119 and US 219.US 119 at Pux and 3 at Ridgway
US 30 there might be east of York, but there's none from there to York.
Not sure on US 30 west of Bedford and Ligonier. There is one in Ligonier
Not sure with US 62 and US 40. Not showing any, either
Not sure with I-376. The only at the 69 mm

Quote...plus they showed one by Philly International Airport that I couldn't find.

I-95 is flat near the airport. Even the nearby Girard Point Bridge's slope is very low-profile. There wouldn't be a need for a runaway ramp there.

VA has at least two on I-77 SB, and at least two on US 52 SB, both coming down from Fancy Gap.

There is also one on VA 100 NB heading down towards Little Walker Creek north of Dublin before its intersection with VA 42.

Thanks for the heads up on Dublin, VA.

According to the 2008 Trucker's Guide to PA map from PennDOT:
I-376 East approaching Ft Pitt Tunnel
US 62/PA 8 North approaching Franklin
old US 422 East approaching Kittanning
US 40 West approaching Uniontown
US 30 West east of Ligonier
US 30 East, east of Breezewood (two)
US 30 West, east of McConnellsburg
US 119 North approaching Punx
US 219 North approaching Ridgway (three)
US 322 West approaching Phillipsburg
US 322 East, east of Potters Mills
I-176 South, approaching Morgantown
PA 93 South, approaching Jim Thorpe

Hawaii has one on Interstate H-3 (signed as Emergency Escape Ramp) after exit #9 to Hawaii 63.
https://www.aaroads.com/west/hawaii003/i-h003_eb_exit_011_01.jpg

And there's another one on westbound H-3, at mile 1.78 between the Tetsuo Harano tunnels and the exit for Interstate H-201. I don't have a photo.

The EB escape ramp east of the Tetsuo Harano and Hospital Rock tunnels is at mile 8.79. The locations for both escape ramps are from HDOT straight-line diagrams.

I don't recall seeing any escape ramps in Alaska, even though it has long steep inclines (like AK 11 through the Atigun Pass) which probably could use them. If I have time, I might pick through the route logs to see if I can find any escape ramps.

Hawaii totally slipped my mind! I do have the two now that have been posted. I guess the 50th state has truckers too! LOL. Thanks for the info.

Also in VA: US 211 on the western side of the Massanutten Mountain-just west (downhill) of intersection with VA 674 ("Run Away Lane").

There are abandoned ramps on the sides of I-39 just north of the IL-38 exit in north central Illinois. There's a bunch of barriers that block it off, could be a runaway truck area.
The local weatherman, trust me I can be 99.9% right!

^^ That was a truck parking area in each direction, equipped with trash bins but not much else.

There are two that I know of in New York, both descending into the Mohawk Valley near Utica:

-NY 28 on the NB approach to Mohawk
-NY 12 in New Hartford

While they would certainly be nice, the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Hudson Valley have none.

I don't know that I've seen anyone mention PA-31 between Mt. Pleasant & Donegal ("Three Mile Hill") yet.
Or the fairly new one on PA-711 just outside of Connelsville.

I don't have opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything

I have both. The one on 31 I drove by once in the opposite direction. LOL!

Minnesota believe it or not has one runaway truck ramp, though it isn't located on a state highway. It's on Cook County Road 12 (the Gunflint Trail) coming down into the town of Grand Marais in the northeasternmost corner of the state.

I've always found runaway truck ramps interesting and I have no doubt that they can be a life and property saver.  However, I can't recall ever seeing evidence of one being used (legitimately) in my travels.  Has anyone here ever come across one that served its purpose?
Photos I post are my own unless otherwise noted.

Haven't seen one being used in person, but here's an old video of one being used (I think it was somewhere in PA, surprise surprise) where the truck using it does an almost full front flip.

A professor showed us this video during a highway design class. The guy filming it was doing it for a news story about the unsafe ramp.

It would be interesting to know what are the types of all the listed runaway truck ramps.  Based on my experience the gravel arrester bed type seems to be the most common.

They weren't on the 2008 Truckers' map that I have...and I had a feeling it was missing a few...

2trailertrucker

In over 23 years of trucking, I have never used one myself. I have seen drivers in them, however.

One driver I knew personally, was coming down Fancy Gap when the brakes failed. He speed was well over 100 mph. He was driving doubles, when he hit the truck ramp. If the rear trailer not flipped over, he would have topped it!

The state police commended him on his driving skills because no one was injured as he maneuvered the set to the ramp.

Yes, they are used. That is why I started gathering the locations for GPS use.
