Same Interchange, Different Exit Numbers

How many places are there that the same interchange carries two different exit numbers based on the direction of travel?

Do not include interchanges where two highways (I, US, State, Etc) cross with their one exit numbering systems.  I mean the same freeway (or other road) that has two different exit numbers for the same interchange solely based on direction.

Here's a few:

1. I-355 at Ogden Avenue (US-34).  Northbound is Exit 20B and southbound is Exit 19.  Reason: ISTHA wanted I-88 to be Exit 20 in both directions for I-355.  Unfortunately, this would make Exit 20 exit before Exit 19.  Hence, Exit 20A and Exit 20B northbound.

2. I-94 and I-294 at Lake-Cook Road.  Northbound is Exit 52 while southbound is Exit 25.  Reason: Exit 52 is for leaving I-294 while Exit 25 is for leaving I-94.

3. I-90 at Indianapolis Boulevard (US-12/20/41).  Westbound is Exit 0 and eastbound is Exit 107.  Reason: Illinois/Indiana state line.

I know there's more out there.

I-90 (Mass Pike) at I-95 (128)/MA 30 in Weston.  Eastbound is Exit 14 and westbound is Exits 15B-A.  The numbers reflect the plaza numbers from the pre-AET tolling system.

Wythe St/Washington St one way pair in Petersburg VA.

SB I-95 it is Exit 52
NB I-95 it is Exit 50D

The ramps meet these streets in the same location but the NB ramp leaves 95 so far back (1.7 miles as part of the Exit 50A-C system) that Exit 51 is after it.  Exit 51 is the same for both directions (I-85), but NB Exit 52 is for VA 36 (there is no exit to VA 36 SB).

I only see one at the NY/CT state line for that road (Exit 30/27).

We have a 4th one here in Chicagoland as well that I forgot about.

I-294/I-80 at I-94/IL-394.  Exit 0 East/southbound and Exit 160 westbound.  Reason: ISTHA uses Exit 0 for the south end of the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), but IDOT recognizes the same interchange as Exit 160 on I-80.

I-95 exit to I-195/US 6 East in Providence.  Northbound is Exit 19, Southbound is Exit 20.

Interstates I've clinched: 97, 290 (MA), 291 (CT), 291 (MA), 293, 295 (DE-NJ-PA), 295 (RI-MA), 384, 391, 395 (CT-MA), 395 (MD), 495 (DE), 610 (LA), 684, 691, 695 (MD), 695 (NY), 795 (MD)

I-85 at I-285 near the Atlanta airport: northbound it's exit 68, but southbound it's exit 70. It's a very, very large interchange that entirely encompasses another one (exit 69 southbound, 69A-B northbound).

Dare I mention exit 39-41 on northbound I-91 in CT, and exit 41-39 southbound?

I don't know how prevalent the opposite is, but on the NYS Thruway near Buffalo, there are several exits with an A or B suffix, and they can be a dozens or so miles apart; Exits 57, 52 and 48 come to mind.

Now that I think about it, there's Exit 52W and Exit 52E (along with Exit 52A), as well as Exit 51W and 51E.
What's not to like about highways and bridges, intersections and interchanges, rails and planes?

Although I/C (Interchange) 19 was the designation of the old mainline plaza, the eastbound exit ramp to Allston-Brighton-Cambridge was (and still is) signed as Exits 18-19.  IIRC, at one point the westbound exit to Brighton-Cambridge was numbered Exits 19-20.

Before the I-91/I-95 interchange project, the exit to CT 10 off of I-95 used to be 44 Northbound and 45 Southbound. (both 44 now)

Such wasn't always the case.  In its original configuration; the I-195 interchange w/I-95 was Exit 20 for both directions.

Oregon has two I can think of off the bat:

  • I-5 at Jct I-84 in Portland is Exit 300 northbound and Exit 301 southbound. Exit 301 used to exist going northbound, but it was underpowered and couldn't handle traffic levels. The I-84 offramp was then widened, lengthened and combined with Exit 300B (Water Ave.) to become the new Exit 300 in the mid-1990s.
  • I-84 at Jct I-205 in Portland is Exits 6 and 8 eastbound (for I-205 south and north respectively) and Exit 9 westbound (for both directions). In short, this is due to highway layout (the roads parallel each other for almost a mile), the cancellation of the Mt. Hood Freeway, ODOT's distinction between internal highway and posted route numbers, and the only sequentially-numbered exits in the state.

Why ConnDOT gave these single ramp exits double numbers I'll never know.  At least with 62-60 on I-84 in Manchester there are 2 legitimately different exit ramps connected by a c-d road.  Northbound should just be 39 (Kennedy Rd) and Southbound should just be 41 (Center St).  Both would probably become 48A if and when I-91 goes mileage based (CT 20 would be 48B).

3 from San Mateo County:

- US 101 at Millbrae Avenue has been signed for years Exit 420 southbound and Exit 421 northbound (https://goo.gl/maps/AeremGfjsTr ) .  (The exit number sign for southbound Bayshore Freeway at that point is unique, a button copy attempt at the internal exit tab that is CalTrans's current trademark - https://goo.gl/maps/WjhPvHMJzq32 )

- I-280 at Sneath Lane/San Bruno Avenue and at I-380: southbound, Sneath/San Bruno ramp is Exit 43B and I-380 east is Exit 43A; northbound, San Bruno/Sneath is Exit 43A and I-380 east is Exit 43B.  (This actually makes way more sense than the US 101 example above, due to the fact a driver will encounter the Sneath/San Bruno offramp before the 380 ramp regardless of which direction they were going on - a function of the Sneath exit being originally planned to also contain ramps to the unbuilt 380 west extension).

- Another example a few miles north in Daly City: due to ramp placement, Eastmoor Avenue's offramp from I-280 north is part of Exit 47 (which also leads to Route 1 south) while from 280 south it is Exit 48.

I only see one at the NY/CT state line for that road (Exit 30/27).

I forgot that they corrected and tinkered with some, but there are a few along the way. 61/62 in Hamden is one.

New York has a couple downstate:

- Northern State Parkway at the Sag/Sunken Meadow Parkways is 44/45 (cloverleaf)
- The infamous Exits 30/27 on the Hutch/Merritt for NY 120A at the NY/CT line (cloverleaf)

For New Jersey, Exits 16E/17 on the Eastern Spur of the Turnpike is the NJ 495 interchange.

On I-96, the northern (western) interchange with I-69 near Lansing is exit 89 eastbound and exit 91 westbound. This could be either because of the interchange's massive footprint or the presence of the Grand River Ave interchange (exit 90) in the middle of it. Or both.

Pennsylvania has a few:

- I-76 @ PA 23: Exit 331B eastbound, Exit 332 westbound. A slip ramp connects I-76 EB to I-476's Exit 16A exit ramp, which also leads to PA 23, explaining the suffixed exit.

- I-95 @ PA 291: Exit 10 northbound, Exit 12B southbound. I'm not sure as to why this isn't signed as exit 10, but Exits 12A-B actually occur on a frontage road. This is also one of the few places in PA to have sequential numbering, since the numbering was very close to the mileage based exits (this is only south of Exit 12).

- I-83 @ US 322 East (end of multiplex): Exit 46B northbound, Exit 47 southbound. I believe that this section of I-83 between Exits 41 to 46 was built as either US 322 or US 230, which means it's very antiquated. I-83 was an afterthought in this area, and so it takes a one lane left exit to head north towards I-81. Lane counts favor US 322, which makes sense considering this was built as part of it.

And one for Maryland:

- I-70 @ US 15/US 340 West/US 40 East/I-270 South: Exits 52A, 52B and 53 eastbound, exits 53A, 53B and 52 westbound. These three roads form a small triangle, and so WB leaves later for US 15 (which also includes US 340 and US 40), but earlier for I-270, and EB leaves earlier for US 15/US 340 (and has a full interchange to boot), but later for I-270.

That 389 probably is... but I think the others have to do with CalTrans putting the exit number divisions at the .5 mile (Exit 1 is MP 0-1.5, 2 is 1.5-2.5, 3 is 2.5-3.5, etc), so the exit midpoints might fall on the divisions.

That's because PennDOT views the westbound Exit 332 on/off ramps as a separate interchange whereas Exit 331 is largely the I-476 interchange.  Back in the days of sequential numbering; I-476 was Exit 28 (A-B) & PA 23 (off I-76 westbound) was Exit 29.

Had the interchanges been built further apart, a separate ramp to PA 23 from I-76 eastbound would've been feasible.

This is also one of the few places in PA to have sequential numbering, since the numbering was very close to the mileage based exits (this is only south of Exit 12).
Worth noting:

1. There are two ramps from I-95 northbound to PA 291; Exits 10 (to 291 eastbound only) & 13 (for both directions).

2.  Prior to the interchange renumbering & the interchange modifications that took place in 2000.  The southbound exit for the airport & 291 (current Exit 12A-B) was indeed Exit 10.  The second northbound exit for PA 291 & Island Ave. was originally Exit 11.

When the interchange modification plans (which involved relocating the ramp to the Departures roadway further west (to accommodate the then-new Terminal A-West) as well as a direct ramp to the airport from I-95 northbound) were submitted & approved for bids; the signage plans still had sequential interchange numbering on them.

The sequential numbers for the ramps were as follows...

For I-95 North:
Exit 10 (no change, access to 291 East)
Exit 11 (new direct access ramp to the airport, current Exit 12; such was never signed as Exit 11 more on that below)
Exit 12 (current Exit 13, for 291/Island Ave.)

For I-95 South:
Exit 12 (current Exit 12B, for 291/Bartram Ave.)
Exit 11 (current Exit 12A, for the airport)

Needless to say, when this project broke ground; PennDOT implemented its conversion of numbered interchanges to mile-marker based ones and the new signs had the exit numbers revised (via a Change Order) to reflect that change prior to being erected.

While one can debate that I-95's interchanges (more like cross-connections in most instances) to PA 291 have different numbers for each direction; the interchange numbering for the airport ramps are essentially the same outside of a suffix for the southbound exit ramp.
