throwing ideas around: New Haven

I've been considering maybe trying to organize a meet in New Haven sometime this summer. The center point, of course, would be the 95/91/34 construction, but there are also a couple freeway stubs in town (CT 34 and East Rock Connector), both of which could be potential stops. I have a tentative route in mind (though I'm open to suggestions), but I don't have a spot for lunch - so if anyone has any recommendations, let's hear them.

And, of course, who might be interested, and when would work best?
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

The Central Jersey meet will be in August, so I'd suggest something in July. Don't think we have any July meets yet. There's more interesting stuff up by Harrrrrrtford (as the pirates would say), which may be a bit far. You could check out Milford Pkwy. and the (relatively) new bridge on the Merritt from there, or clinch CT 40. Be sure to see the West Rock tunnels. Not much else really springs to mind in that area.

Not in the vicinity, but I have planned a meet in Wausau, Wisconsin, likely July 9.  Going to set the date this weekend.

Ah, the open skies, wind at my back, warm sun on my... wait, where the hell am I?!
As a matter of fact, I do own the road.

I would be interested. And I know a good lunch spot in New Haven: Louis' Lunch. It's a burger place that's been around forever and is very very good.

CT 40 and West Rock were both on my list. Milford Parkway and Sikorsky Bridge were not but are both perfectly doable.

Louis' Lunch is intriguing, but... tiny. Doesn't look like the sort of place you could squeeze a group into, and the parking lot is packed when I look at it on street view. I was thinking something outside of downtown for both of these reasons.

As for the date, I'll exclude July 9th on account of Waussau... and July 16th is also out on account of I will be in Cincinnati that weekend. Ideally I'd like to do a final scout-out the weekend before, so, let's tentatively say July 30th. Is that really bad for anyone? I suppose we could also do the 23rd, but we'd be winging it a bit more.

If you go a little bit early (think maybe an 11 AM lunch instead of 12), Louis' wouldn't be a problem. As for parking, my dad and I drove with a big cargo van into downtown New Haven and found plenty of parking spots (obviously this was because Louis' lot was full).

If I spend my summer "downstate" (fairly decent chance of that happening) I'll go.  But that depends on what internships I get offers for.

If I'm free, I'll attend New Haven (not too far for me).  Last weekend of July, I would definitely be out, since I'll be on vacation in the Pacific Northwest.  But don't plan around me.

One possibility for eats -- if one of the North Haven service areas on the Wilbur Cross Parkway (CT 15) gets renovated in time, and with a new "Fast Break"  sit-down restaurant (sponsored by UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma).  I know ground was broken on the renovations last July, and it'll cutting it close on time, but worth watching for.  Last summer, on my way back from the Providence meet, I stopped by the Geno's Fast Break in an Indian casino in southeast Connecticut.  Good variety of hot foods (including, of course, Italian), and with lots of service area parking should be road-meet suitable.

"Fast Break" will also be added to some I-95 service areas as they're renovated, but the North Haven areas on CT 15 seem to be first on the renovation program.

I went to school in New Haven a long time ago, but I was car-less and ate mainly at places within walking distance of my dorm, all of which have only limited on-street parking and so don't work for a road meet.  I occasionally walked past the CT 34 stub end underneath a parking garage.  As far as I can tell, other than the ongoing interchange reconstruction, nothing much has changed in the past three decades.

Another possibility for eats, and I mention this only because of the location (and from what I can recall from memory), is the SBC Restaurant and Brewery on CT 10 (Dixwell Ave.) right off of CT 15 (Wilbur Cross Pkwy.) in Hamden.  Since I never ate there, I can't vouch for the food, but I figured I'd mention the eatery anyway.

Wait, there's an SBC up by New Haven? That's perfect! We've got one here in Stamford and it's a great place.
I think we found our lunch spot!
