From a look at the FHWA's website today, it appears they've updated the information on their interstate mileage log tables as of 12/31/13. It does include mileage for all new 2di interstates approved of last year, including I-2, I-69 (plus I-69E and I-69C) in Texas and I-49 in Missouri and I-22 as well. Their 3di table (Table 2) has newer information as well, adding mileage for I-495, I-785 in NC, but some of the information is old, still listing the Maine Turnpike mileage for I-495, for example, or missing, where is I-781 in NY? I also cannot see how they derived the mileage for I-74 in NC.

You can judge for yourself how accurate the tables are, starting with Table 1:

The other tables links are at the bottom of the page.

Clinched, minus I-93 (I'm missing a few miles and my file is incorrect)

Traveled, plus US 13, 44, and 50, and several state routes

I will be in Burlington VT for the eclipse.

So I-99 is not in New York yet?

Nope, no movement on that. I'm guessing it won't be until the freeway between Williamsport and Bellefonte is finished... so, give it 20 years at least.
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

Louisiana is missing the new open 18 miles of I-49

I can't tell what happened to I-210 CA, considering that the old part from I-10 to SR 57 has been removed by Caltrans.

At this point, I think it's fair to say that SR 57 between I-10 and I-210/SR 210 remains I-210 in the eyes of FHWA.

I think I have a partial explanation of the FHWA's total for I-74 mileage in NC. If you take the three sections currently signed as I-74: From the VA line to US 52, from Exit 65 in High Point to I-73 in Randleman, and from Alt 74/Bus 74 east of Maxton to NC 41, you get a total of around 57 miles, not the 53.4 listed. However, my 57 includes about 4.5 miles where it is signed with I-77, take that away, as they do (partly) with I-73, and you get around 53. This doesn't explain why they count only 16.3 miles for shared mileage with I-73. The total should be around 55 miles. By looking at the mileage of the different segments signed I-73/I-74 over the years, you only get around 16 miles if you include the original segment that ran from US 220 Exit 51 to 39 (12 miles) and the last segment signed, from Exit 76 to 80, the 4 miles north of Asheboro to where the two routes split.

So the log entry for I-74 should look something like this (counting the Forsyth County section that is approved, but not signed):
I-74 NC  122 miles  -  62.5 (I-74 only)  (w/ I-73 55 miles) (w/ I-77 4.5 miles)

I don't know if other states have this issue, but it fascinates me that California has multiple situations of signage/designations conflicting with FHWA Interstate milage listings:

- the north terminus of I-110
- where I-210 currently ends
- the very existence of I-305
- I-80's post-1968 west terminus as an interstate route

Not sure if the spur segment of the San Bernardino Freeway (former US 60/70/99) between the San Bernardino Split and I-5 is in this awkward category as well.

As more I-15 signs appear sporadically to address the segment of SR 15 between I-5 and I-8, you can also add this to that category. I-15 is signed on one advance sign prior to the exit from I-5 south to SR 15 north, on one reassurance sign along northbound after the I-805 interchange, on 39th Street prior to Adams Avenue, and on one advance sign prior to the transition from SR 94 east to SR 15 north. There is also a city-erected I-15 sign at the southern terminus of SR 15 (intersection with 32nd St and Norman Scott Rd). It is unclear is the installation of these I-15 signs are errors or an intended movement toward changing SR 15 to I-15. However, the mileage log does not include the SR 15 mileage on its total I-15 mileage in California.

No I-41 yet in Wisconsin, but then I'm still confused over whether that got officially approved last year or not.

Has California even submitted a change to the Interstate Highway System since the 1980s? I-15 north of San Diego to Devore is the last one I can think of.

Edit: I-215 south of Moreno Valley might have been early 1990s, if I remember right.

I recall that they sent in the 210 extension twice in the 90s/early 2000s and the FHWA rejected it as it hadn't been completed yet.

As far as I know, there's been no other Interstate submissions by Caltrans. 210 needs to be changed, since FHWA shows the route ending at Interstate 10 in Pomona at the Kellogg Interchange at the convergence with SR 57 and SR 71. Signage of course changes from Interstate to SR along 210 upon crossing the SR 57 interchange. I guess this means SR 57 between I-210 and I-10 is still part of the Interstate Highway System.

Other Interstate changes that probably could/should be submitted at some point would include SR 15 south of I-8 and SR 905 between I-5 and the Otay Mesa border crossing. As far as I know, there are no immediate or pending plans to add either route to the Interstate highway system despite earlier written reports indicating that the intent was to make both routes into Interstates. Maybe an application will happen at some point in the future?

Andy
