Temporary arrows like that are used by numerous non-profit groups as well.  Bike runs, Walks, etc.  Could've been an charity organization that told the drivers to follow the 3 white-on-black arrows to their destination.

Military convoy?

That's what GPS is for.

That's why I thought military convoy.  Training for drivers to follow marked signs, so they'll be able to when the enemy is jamming GPS.

And that's why I thought film shoot. Those are often located in hard-to-describe locations, or are widely spread over an area, not easily referenced by a GPS-friendly address.

I saw a few of those MA 71 signs last weekend, but it was too dark to safely take a good picture. Town maintenance does wonders for keeping old signs around.

I saw them when I went to Thanksgiving in Sheffield. They were only on the eastbound/southbound side. When returning to New York, I didn't see any old signs.

There is an Arrow-Per-Lane installation on I-55 in Barnhart, Missouri, The only Arrow-Per-Lane installation i seen outside of St Louis.

Here is another overhead installation in Festus, Missouri, where US 67 meets with I-55.

It's on a county road so I'm pretty sure it'll be there for a long time (or until a car wipes it out). Thanks!

Fixed for you. That long URL actually points to image data contained within itself, rather than hosted on a website somewhere, but the forum mangles data-URL hyperlinks and image embeds, so I hosted the pic myself.

PS – That looks like it might have come from one of our own threads in Road-Related Illustrations.

You're right.  The above drawing is mine...

...and it was posted to the original Road-Related Illustration thread (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=575.msg107061#msg107061) before we got our own sub-board.

This drawing was also posted to Skyscraper City in a discussion about the newly-introduced arrow-per-lane signs in the 2009 MUTCD.

Oh and FWIW, this sign doesn't really exist so it shouldn't be considered a "best of".

Perhaps the wrong thread for this question, but I'll try:

I was driving the other night on a newly reconstructed stretch of I-75 near Toledo Ohio the other night, and all of the brand new BGSs were almost unreadable.

The weather conditions were wet/foggy and hovering around 31F. The roads were wet, but frost was developing on everything else, including the BGSs on the interstate I believe. I'm guessing that the frost was obscuring the signs at night?

Last night driving the same stretch, everything was bright and clear.

Anyone else noticed something like this?

Yes, that happens sometimes. Condensation on humid nights can cause a similar effect. Not much that can be done to counteract it.

Oh, yes.

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Any idea if this issue is more prevalent with incremental or extruded panels? Washington (who uses incremental) doesn't seem to have too much of an issue with frosty signs (at least from my experience).

The same thing happens out here in northern California but in our case, condensation from fog or humidity is the culprit.  This concerns me a little because Caltrans has issued a directive to remove the lighting fixtures from overhead signs when Type XI sheeting is used.  What good are highly reflective signs when they can be obscured by condensation?

I've always seen it on extruded panels, but that's because nobody uses incremental around here. Keep in mind that local weather tendencies are going to cause a lot of variance, too (the dew point has to be high enough).

Well is it frost or condensation? Because Washington gets plenty of frost this time of year. This is also a very humid part of the US. During the summer, the dew point is usually lower than the temp, so it doesn't feel humid. But the winter regularly deals out brutal humidity/dew point combos.

This was a test ignore it.

I know, I know. Just testing ya.

Jokes aside, do they have different effects on the signs?

spooky

The condensation/frost effect obscuring sign visibility is common on cold mornings in MA, at least based on my observations of new-ish BGS on MA 3, I-93 and I-95.

PurdueBill

Speaking of frost on signs: Took this picture on OH 315 at I-270 5 years ago tonight driving home from the Super Bowl in Indianapolis.  Too bad the lighting was turned off or else the signs would have looked fine.

(Photo was taken around 2am as I recall.)
