Nice....I like the 'there's no crime or corruption on our docks' bit. Closer to what I remember:

In this one, I like the quick shot of Newmarket, the new, hip, 70s modern, heavy on the glass shopping center down by Front Street.  I remember walking this in the 80s, and it was already half empty.  I believe it's all gone and redeveloped now.  Old photo here:

Both of those clips were quite nostalgic, especially the second one, 1976 is when I graduated from high school and remember the big hoopla of the Bicentennial (it was also my school's 50th anniversary, so it was really special!), I can still remember some of the landmarks from the first movie as a little boy, especially the Goldman and Fox Theaters (long gone now with the explosive redevelopment of the West Market Street area).

Great find!

I remember watching the Phillies play there as a kid...ah, the nostalgia.  Popcorn, roasted peanuts, seating that was older than God, we won't talk about the sanitary facilities, but it was all good for a kid in the 60s.  Always wondered why no one sat in the bleachers until I was at a game one day and saw the sun beating down on those seats and went "oh, got it"...

They let it go to hell once the Phillies moved to the Vet, and a few years later it caught on fire and the rest was razed.  A damn shame too.  Just checked Google Maps and looked at the old site and there's a humongous church there now...

According to this 1988 Inquirer article, Newmarket opened in 1975 and was already struggling to find and keep tenants by 1976.

I think the Gallery at Market East is going to be gone before the end of the decade. If you cannot keep K-mart, then you must be doing something wrong.

I think it was discussed in another thread, but I believe the Gallery is going through a big renovation that will close significant sections down at a time.  Not that I think it will have a major impact, and the end result will be the same.  I'll miss it a little bit, as we used to walk it when I was young as part of day trips into the city so I could ride PATCO.

When you lose your two major tenants (JCP and Strawbridge's), you're in dire straits.   The route K-Mart is going it's probably going to go tango uniform before the Gallery...

I think it would be a shame, they were trying to revitalize East Market Street and I thought the Commuter Rail tunnel to Market East would have helped immensely (even though they dragged their feet on it for years).

From what i've read, it was mostly due to the fact that stores like K-mart were in there....it didn't attract the clientele that were normally shopping in that part of town, and people from the areas that would commute there would not shop there due to there being similar stores closer.
