Some more features I am catching up on.  From July 2011.  Pittsburgh and Mount Washington.

Blog:
http://surewhynotnow.blogspot.com/2013/01/catching-up-pittsburgh-from-mount.html

Great pics of Shiloh St - the little business district back in there is surprisingly like a well-kept secret, which is especially vexing when you consider it is literally a block from probably the most tourist traffic in the city. I've mulled moving up there a few times (another incredible thing is how affordable housing is as soon as you get off of Grandview), but never pulled the trigger (mainly because I work in the East End and the public transit connections would be a pain in the ass).

Next time you're up there, if you haven't before, you should definitely check out Chatham Village. It's one of the few successfully-implemented "Garden City" prototypes, and it's a National Historic Landmark.

Blog entry from our Thanksgiving Week visit to Assateague Island:

http://surewhynotnow.blogspot.com/2012/12/assateague-island-national-seashore.html

Yeah... I've read that Hurricane Sandy did a number on the beach.  Chincoteague also had it pretty rough from pics/reports I saw shortly after the storm (I think it was the National Wildlife Refuge site that had a bunch of pics)

Some friends and I are still waiting to see/hear predictions on how the island is gonna be this summer before making vacation plans.

Mother nature can sure be a bitch.
I don't have opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything

Another Catching Up Entry - Part 1 of the August 2011 Trip to Key West. Sunset in Tampa and night shots of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

I was at the edge of Ybor City with my brother in 2009. The furthest I got (on foot) was the front of the Port Authority and the Florida Aquarium. We had walked from the then-Saint Pete Times Forum (box office and gift shop portions) and the Channelside open air "mall."

Beautiful photos.  You certainly had a very nice day to take all those pictures.

Key West is a destination I'd love to get back to.  24 hours isn't enough.  But sometimes, just a small taste of somewhere makes your next visit even better.  Hopefully, I'll get back there someday.

An interruption from the Catching Up Series for the first photo trip of 2013 taken yesterday with Joe Babyak.  Just a brief roadtrip exploring parts of old US 64 in Wake, Franklin, and Nash Counties.

Over the weekend my friend Chris Allen and I completed US 601 in NC.  It was surprisingly a rather boring drive - I think I took all of eight photos.  His roadtrip summary covers the trip a lot better than I could!

I never got around to putting this feature up on the old gribblenation site. Here's a small feature on Grandfather Mountain from a trip in April of 2008.

http://carolinaxroads.blogspot.com/2016/11/grandfather-mountain.html

I'm slowly moving my Blue Ridge Parkway feature to Sure, Why Not.  Most of the original pages have transferred and a handful of new stops have been added from trips in 2008 and 2010.  I hope to have them completed by the end of the year. With that most of the North Carolina that was on gribblenation will have migrated to the blog.  I will get to a number of the flickr features from NC after all has been migrated or if a comment on the blog or flickr generates moving it ahead.

CanesFan27

This is another former feature I had on All Things NC! - this one covers Mt. Mitchell State Park here in North Carolina.  It's been updated with new photos from my wife and I's visit to the park in May of 2010. Another place we can't wait to take the boys to when they get older.

On of my favorite parts of the old gribblenation site was the Blue Ridge Parkway Photo Journey - well I have transferred all the pages to the blog.  But at the same time - I have updated a number of stops including Mt. Mitchell State Park (NC 128) and added six new stops.

The new Gateway Page for the Blue Ridge Parkway Journey is here:

http://surewhynotnow.blogspot.com/p/the-blue-ridge-parkway-drive.html

Future trips and features along the parkway will be incorporated via this gateway page. With my wife's father's side of the family in Charlottesville, we hope to add more to Virginia than the existing three features sometime soon!

Sometimes town or village names are named after people like the family that first settled there or the first postmaster, etc. Other places are named for a feature in the area. Then there is White Post, Virginia which is literally named after the white post that has stood near or at the intersection of White Post Road and Berrys Ferry Road for over 250 years.

Legend has it that in 1750, Lord Farifax directed George Washington to erect a white post near Ashby Gap-Winchester Road to direct travelers to nearby Greenway Court, home of Fairfax's Library. Obviously, the post is not the original. It has been knocked down numerous times by unsuspecting motorists.

White Post is an unincorporated village off of US 340 in Clarke County. Like many nearby areas, there are a number of Bed & Breakfasts within the town. Also nearby is a classic roadside attraction, Dinosaurland. This family friendly has been over for 50 years and features over 50 different dinosaurs.

One of the more unique features of North Carolina are the three remaining cable pulled river ferries.  The ferry crossings at each of these three locations are each over 100 years old and have a unique history and connection to the communities that surround them. On the old All Things NC! website I was able to feature the Elwell Ferry in the Southeastern part of the state.  I never got around to doing features on the other two (Sans Souci and Parker's) until now.  I have them up on my Carolina Crossroads blog:

Elwell Ferry:
http://carolinaxroads.blogspot.com/2016/07/elwell-ferry.html

Sans Souci Ferry - located in Bertie County:
http://carolinaxroads.blogspot.com/2017/01/the-second-cable-ferry-in-north.html

Parker's Ferry - located in Hertford County:
http://carolinaxroads.blogspot.com/2017/01/parkers-ferry.html

All three ferries are free and if you live in NC or Southeastern Virginia - they are worth the day trip to check out.

One of the first in depth highway features I wrote was on US 29 (Seminole Trail) in Virginia.  It is also one of my favorites.  I did some touch up work and brought it back to the blog this evening.

Meanwhile, I added my own post to the blog as well, this time regarding a covered bridge in Oregon.

Another great Virginia drive is US 15 and the James Madison Highway.  Just like the Seminole Trail page - I've moved to the blog and did some tweaking:

One of the features I enjoyed doing and was slowly developing on gribblenation was the Small Towns of Virginia Series.  Over the past month, I have moved over the features from the old website, and also added a half a dozen more new towns and villages from throughout the state. (Dillwyn, Floyd, Pound, Clintwood, White Post, and Brookneal)

As a result, I have added a new index page on the blog for the series and any additional new towns, villages, and historically significant locations featured in the future.

http://surewhynotnow.blogspot.com/p/small-towns-of-virginia-series.html

Enjoy!

If you've traveled on US 19 in West Virginia for any reason - you've most likely crossed over the New River Gorge Bridge.  If you are like myself - you've stopped at the Canyon Rim Visitors Center a number of times.  I've redone a feature page I used to have on the bridge with new photos and some new information.

Sure, why not take a cruise to the Caribbean. Then take some road photos during your port excursions. After that, send those photos to your road enthusiast brother. That is precisely what happened here. My brother and my sister-in-law sent me a bunch of road photos that they took in the Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands a few years back. I'm finally getting around to posting them now on the Sure, Why Not? blog.

One of the West Virginia features that I never got around to was a history and feature on Corridor L / US 19.  This route I am very familiar with as I travel it anywhere from 6-10 times a year going between NC and PA.  It is a very important highway in Central WV and really has had a positive impact within that region of the state.  So please take a minute to read and learn a bit about West Virginia's Gateway to Adventure - Corridor L

Sure, why not take a gander to the sign garden in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
