East Ohio Street is another step closer to having its at-grade intersections at the 31st and 40th Street Bridges eliminated. PennDOT District 11 awarded a contract to prepare PA 28 and relocate railroad tracks for the future upgrading project.

Where is the widening going to?  Just the 31st and 40th Street Bridge areas, or down to the 16th Street Bridge and Chestnut Street off-ramps?

East Ohio Street interchange north to the Millvale interchange is the extent of the project area.

I took Route 28 from Brookville to Pittsburgh this week.  There is a lot of demo taking place along the Ohio Street portion.  Many of the old, abandoned eyesores are gone.

In addition, almost all of PA-28 from Pittsburgh to Kittanning has Clearview font, now.  With the projects near the Highland Park and 61st Street bridges, as well as the repaving between Creighton and Natrona Heights, almost all of the signs have been replaced.

They're also about to start working on upgrading intersections on alternative routes on the other side of the river.

Over the past few weeks a bunch of utility poles have been put in along the highway.  (I'm sure for some lighting, and cameras and such).  The railroad also put in a new overhead signal thing as well recently.

Another benefit of the Route 28 project....

I can vouch that the trail it's replacing is pretty crappy for bike riding... I'm looking forward to enjoying that.

Starting tomorrow, Inbound PA-28 will be restricted to one lane from 9AM to 3PM so that crews can start taking down billboards for the next stage of construction.  Heard this on the local news.

Of course, in various places along the road, Route 28 work has been snarling traffic for many years.

Or that 28's substandardness has snarled traffic for many years ;-)

On the news tonight (KDKA-TV2), they will show the brand new official plans for the widening of PA-28.

And here's the news article from KDKA:

No video yet.  Will update this post when and if they add the video to the site.

I thought about going to the open house, but LHHC business took precedence.  It's too bad since Jim Struzzi was there, and I heard from a District 11 employee years ago that he would put a link to my site on their page but won't because I mention Overdrive's ranking.  I did go to the one back in 2004, when the project was to be done by now, where I met Dick Skrinjar who once e-mailed me saying "Who are you and why?"

I'll have to update my unofficial site about the project.

Your link's a bit weird.  Thank the forum software for not recognizing FTP...

agentsteel53

I can't fix the link ... even editing it to remove the excess "http://" results in it being put back.

I had edited it to go to the District 11 site then with a note as to where it was located there.

Four years seems to be a bit long.
Speed limits limit life

Makes sense in this case, since you have a very constricted right-of-way and have to keep traffic flowing on the existing road.

Then there's that thing called ol' man winter that cuts into the calendar year...

The entire corridor will not be under construction at the same time, but the project will encompass four sections of work with start and completion times varying from now until 2014.

rickmastfan67

All I know is that traffic will be horrific during this project.  But at least I live in the North Hills and I can totally avoid the construction area on PA-28 if I want to go into town by using I-279. :)  Odds are, I'll not be on PA-28 (at least in the construction area) until this project is over.

Looks like people get a week reprieve.
Though for a project of this magnitude, the week postponement won't amount to much.

According to the District 11 press release, the reason for the delay is because temporary traffic signals need to be installed at the 28 southbound/40th Street Bridge intersection.

rickmastfan67

Tonight is the night for the NB lane closings.  NB PA-28 above the 31st Street Bridge will be restricted down to one lane starting @ 9PM tonight.
