Lots of good maps and stats.

Its been truncated by sixteen miles between the Strangler and the Skyway.
https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8337329,-87.7319639,11z

Heck get US 12 & 20 on the diagonal as well. There is actually a US highway version strangler just a couple miles away when US 20 joins US 12 & 45 at Mannheim and Lake to cross a four lane bridge.

An interesting read... http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~dreyfus/history.html

So stop the "railroad warfare" and shorten I-90 in one fell swoop.

http://imgur.com/E6RD2Co

Makes www.greatlakesbasin.net superfluous and even more ridiculous.

So you prove my point. 1929? 1939? 1977? 1978? Moving road signs around is NOT doing it. The FACTS are its NOT what it should be in 2017, or 2027 and beyond, is it? "Trust the state to have historical knowledge"? What "state" are YOU talking about? IL, Cookco, Chicago, IDOT D1, ISTHA?

Theres this...https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8337329,-87.7319639,11z

And this...http://imgur.com/E6RD2Co

If you think the southside and NW IN (hell the whole MSA) is doing just fine and needs nothing, you go with that.

I bake to differ. Look how well ORDs area is doing.  And Im a NORTHsider by a kilometer. Hell yeah I want the whole southside (and west & east) to get up-to-snuff in TWENTY years. We dont need another Detroit here, do we?

Quote from: hobsini2 on September 25, 2016, 07:33:58 AM
Oh and the CN railroad that you want to put this on is actually at surface level for most of it especially from Midway heading west. And the CN uses that railway to carry freight on an hourly basis. So if you get rid of the CN line, you are putting that freight either on to trucks, means MORE traffic, or you are putting it on other lines which are already busy with traffic. Getting rid of that line to convert it to an expressway is a bad idea.

NEVER suggested "getting rid" of the CN line. Just the opposite actually. Grade-separating it as well, with at least two tracks.

It seems apparent that you have not, after all this time, even read the complete proposal in this.... https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=16790.0

"New grade-separations along CN rails in this area would include Riverside Dr., Harlem (IL43), 26th St., Veterans Dr., Hainesworth , DesPlaines Av, Cermak, First Av.(IL171), 17th Av., Oak Ridge Av., Harrison St., and Wolf Rd.

Heres a recent Tribune article describing an $8B rail bypass plan??

   http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-illinois-rail-line-0322-biz-20160318-story.html

Why not just build the few miles of rails needed between CN & BNSF in Cicero and CSX and NSX in Englewood?

As six of seven Class 1 RRs, numerous short lines, METRA and AMTRAK collide here everyday, grade-separated rail lines along the same Hypo route would enable the RRs to get thru town in an hour, instead of days. The old IC (now CN) RR line can be seen briefly at the Strangler. Thats the vector.

Whats an alternative?? Widen the IKE?
http://eisenhowerexpressway.com/pdfs/i290%20alternatives%20evaluation%20summary2013apr02.pdf

It could take TEN years and cost $4B? Not insurmountable for a region that has a $550B a YEAR GDP. In NYC thats pocket change. A public-private partner-ship (PPP) would be needed to fund a project like this which would have to include IDOT, ISTHA, CMAP, CREATE, Federal & CMAQ, state, county, city, the RRs, construction contractors, tollway funders...even the bastards that stole (then sold for 50% profit?) the Skyway rights. :spin: Yes it would be like nailing jello to a wall. This is like a chess game, jigsaw puzzle, and crossword rolled into one."

Heres 1929... http://imgur.com/a/D0amN Thanx h2.

Heres post 1978 (today) https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8337329,-87.7319639,11.

If you dont see I-290 or US 20 and 12 (from 355 to 294) (1977 I-90) lining up like a dueling pistol against the other end, the Skyway, the first place one can actually head/go east (ie Indiana), what I believe is the CRUX of many of the regions traffic and transport (and social and economic) problems, then you dont.

To paraphrase another poster... Once you read/see something (maps), you cant unread it. Half has been studied (Crosstown "I-494") at least twice from Cicero to the Skyway, but dies because of a foolhardy notion to go north instead of NW. There is a way to ease/appease the Strangler by jumping/flyover 294.

It is SRO (standing room only) on roads/rails around here. This is the only way I see to correct that without too many toes getting stepped on. No more than 20 residences demolished or a 100 more "impaired" (mostly by a late-afternoon shadow) for this whole 16-mile corridor.

Heres a "missing part".

"4.  I agree that Chicago east of 294 is in need of an additional expressway or two.  Driving a long distance on Harlem or Cicero is excruciating.  However, I don't see a reasonable way of fixing it."

Well lets just start with ONE reasonable way. OK? The Strangler and the Ike ARE "excruciating", Harlem and Cicero are secondary problems and transit corridors for both of them have been proposed so YOU dont have to drive.

I didn't realize that so much of Cook County was still unincorporated.

Lots of good maps and stats.

* Page 43:  Some needs to explain to me how I-355 at I-88 and I-290 at I-355  can be freight bottlenecks while I-90 at I-290/IL 53 is not?  The first two only seems to back up during peak hours, while the third backs up seven days a week and well outside of peak hours.  And how did I-290 at I-294 escape being on that map?

Overall I'd call it a fluff piece that does not do much good for much of the county, particularly the outer regions.

^^ Cook County government seems to think very Chicago-centrically.  It's a major sticking point that commonly pisses off the South Suburbs (Orland, Matteson) and the NW Suburbs (Schaumburg, Palatine).

Seriously where? All the unincorporated land left in Milwaukee County disappeared in 1960.

It's in the study linked in the original post.

I note lots of talk, but very few - if any - suggestions.

If, as the document suggests, Cook County wants to have a "seat at the table" with its transportation infrastructure, then ideas and suggestions need to be proposed.

It should be noted that a lot of the unincorporated area in Cook County is actually forest preserve space, little incentive for most municipalities to incorporate those areas. As far as this "plan" document, I consider it more of an "assessment". An assessment is merely a good start, but I agree with Stratus that Cook County needs to have some legitimate and tangible ideas, not just "concepts" of what needs to be done. Show us some actual projects they propose and would like to take the lead on.

I agree. How is the #1 problem in the region (the Strangler) overlooked? It didnt deserve a little brown ring?  :ded: Sometimes these maps are as interesting in what they DO NOT show.

Ya gotta cut 'em some slack. Its taken seventy years just to get out of denial. Its going to take a bit more to get up to speed. And nobody seems to give a shit.
