Once in awhile, some of us get together and decide that we will pick a weekend as a Website Weekend. Several of us hunker down, shut out the outside world, and try to catch up on a tiny piece of our backlog. While these are by no means official and certainly less formal than a meet, sometimes those of us who are close together will get together and work side by side on our respective projects, or perhaps meet up at the same place for a break in the middle.
So, this thread is to propose and discuss Website Weekends.
And in the spirit of this thread, I hereby propose a Website Weekend this weekend! It appears my Saturday plans are falling through and I have no major home projects distracting me... so I'll be trying to dig through a tiny piece of my backlog and get something up by the end of the weekend. Who else wants to join me?
maybe, though I just did that last weekend. 1500 new photos on the shield gallery.
next weekend may be a vector graphics weekend. gotta make up some sign designs.
I need to CREATE a website, though when I do I'll have to get in on this.
Andy and I used to do this a lot. We found that we got a lot of work done and found the experience to be more productive and enjoyable than its usually. Flaroadgeek has teamed up with me from time to time this year to help me knock out some of my recent backlog too.
Sounds like fun. Wish I was closer, I'd join in ... especially next weekend when I'll be "bach-ing" it with my wife being gone.
I really want to update my West Virginia highways pages and my Kentucky exit guides, but I just can't get motivated to do so. Plus it would require a complete page rebuild and I'm just not ready to jump into that. I've actually thought about giving those pages up, free to a good home, if someone wanted to take the information I've already compiled and update or expand it, and concentrating on photos and videos.

I echo your sentiments H.B. I'm not exactly going to do a two-day drive to change (or in my case, build) a website ;), but I guess taking some time out will be necessary at times. :-D
Given the audience here, I'm not expecting Website Weekends to necessarily be all in person. We could set up in chat here a couple times over the weekend and discuss our progress.
Adam Prince, C.C. Slater and I have done the website weekend a few things when I was living around Albany, NY. Chris Jordan showed up once too. But I found website weekends to be very productive. Adam and I also had website evenings a few times when we lived nearby to each other, same concept as the website weekend, but for just an evening. After Adam moved to Raleigh for the 2nd time, there was another website weekend in Albany, featuring C.C. Slater, myself, and the stylings of Smilin' John OI! O'Krakoff (John Krakoff to you, pal). I was somewhat limited in my action that weekend since I slipped on ice and fell down a long slope of front stairs earlier that week, but I did what I could.
If Dan is free, I should be able to work on the debut of the Canada Highways.com pages for NJ.
I should be around one afternoon or the other. Now, if Scott (Sonysnob) is around, then you'd have the whole team on board for the web weekend. :sombrero:
if the gaming clan doesn't get in the way, i will probably add another JCT list to my page
I'm game for this, Steve. Perhaps I will be able to actually start my website up for real.
Hmm. I have Friday off and C. will be out of town... Might work on my road photo gallery if that's what everyone else is doing :)

Who's C.? ;)
A person...
Website Weekend chat is live 24/7 on IRC. Message me and I'll let you know where.
Now that the days are growing shorter and colder, I suggest we consider another website weekend in the near future.
That might be a good opportunity to start working on the first Ohio Highway Ends update in quite awhile...

heh and for me the exploring season is starting in earnest. I for one love winter; much better scenery, and one does not randomly boil alive in the heat.
(that said, it was 83 yesterday at 6600 feet elevation near the eastern Rockies where I live. WTF!?)

So you don't mind randomly freezing alive?
nope; I can always throw on one more jacket.
even indoors, my ideal operating temperature is between about 55 and 60 degrees. It got kinda cold inside the other day, so I figured I should start getting around to turn the heat on ... I glanced at the thermostat, and it was 49.

That definitely would be a good hint :P
I like 49, and I will prefer 29 or -29 depending
This past weekend would've been the weekend to do it, at least for the East Coasters, given the crappy weather we had (rained more or less continuously in DC from Wednesday afternoon thru Sunday morning)...
While I don't presently have a website, I have a bunch of TN 840 photos to upload to flickr and to send to Alex for use on AARoads, so that might be a good time to finally get around to it.
Here's what's going down:
Last weekend was Bridge Day. Poorly attended on our front, I believe, but of course well attended overall.
Next weekend, as far as I know, is open. But I have some housekeeping to take care of so I'm not proposing it.
Obviously we then have Halloween.
November 7 appears to be at least one, maybe two gatherings involving several of us. I believe one of those is Fort to Port.
November 14 or 21 is the DC meet. The other weekend would be a good candidate for Website Weekend.
Then comes Xmas. Then comes another meet. On the 14th, many contributors here will have finals or studying. The 21st, many will have returned home for the holidays.
So... how about when froggie decides which weekend is DC, we'll make the next Website Weekend on the other one?

It would be as good of a time as any.

There are also a few of us from the roads community that are making a roadtrip to Columbus, Ohio for a hockey game the weekend of November 7th.

It's possible to do something on the same weekend as a meet, since I would more than likely upload pics from Fort-to-Port either later that evening or the next day anyway. Of course, people could filter in and out during the weekend as availability warrants. (I sincerely doubt you'll find a specific time where everyone who wants to participate will have time to access the Net.)
I need to do some type of update period - thank goodness for flickr and the blog though. I've been finding that a lot quicker and better interaction. THough based on a few things that have happened, I think I am going to work on Keystone Town MArkers and items in PA soon.
I just have writer's block in trying to come up with a description and page flow for the WV projects I have been staggering on - King Coal, Tolsia, Coalfields and Corridor L.
Any suggestions to flush this out - http://www.gribblenation.com/wvpics/kingcoal/ (http://www.gribblenation.com/wvpics/kingcoal/) - is appreciated.

Don't be in any rush. None of us who participate on this forum today will ever live to drive on a completed King Coal Highway.
HB,
True we won't. But there's nothing that really tracks this highway's progress - what little there is. (WVDOH's site is a joke) From the feedback I get with the general public, I've found that pages that I have that are more focused to general/human interest features and news related on specific projects garner the most interest. (Hence why I am trying to slowly spin off various sign galleries.)
Corridor H in WV and some of the North/South Carolina construction projects are examples.
Though the Keystone Town Markers project has recently been getting a lot of e-mails from local communities looking at restoring or trying to find ways to purchase a 'new' one.
Given the crappy weather in DC today, I'm probably going to turn today into a "website half-weekend"...
WEBSITE WEEKEND: NOVEMBER 13-15
We're still working out the logistics. But it's a weekend between two meets, which is a perfect time to upload the photos from the first so you're not swamped by the second. Or just to get some stuff done. Coordinate with other people in your region and turn it into a get-together event!
I plan on participating in next weekend's Website Weekend, but I'll probably just do so from home. I've been traveling a lot, so it would be good to just make a pot of chili and work on my backlog from the comfort of my own home. Of course, I would make myself available that weekend to chat about Website Weekend.
ditto. Got a "road trip" coming up, but it's business and also using a company car so no roadgeeking on this one :-|
I am currently in the midst of Website Weekend, uploading ALL of my Ohio photos, which number into the thousands. This will be followed by a greater interoperability between the GN Roadtrips page of yore with my Flickr gallery.
My modest contribution to Website Weekend is downloading my pics from my Fort-to-Port meet trip from my cameras to my computer. I'm currently sitting in the hospital with my dad, who was hospitalized the night of the Nov. 7 meet, and the 'Net connection I've been able to secure isn't fast enough for a massive upload of pics.
All I've been doing is editing (several hundred photos), linking (several dozen pages), and now I've just begun to write some of the new pages (got through the CR's). I don't know how much time I have tomorrow to continue. Update should be coming before Thanksgiving...
I'm in the middle of building an "Exit guide" for Wisconsin freeways - at least the Interstates will be up when I'm ready to publish. If time, I'll add more photos to my flicker collection and write the first blog entry for my road trip summary.
Something above and beyond what Matt Salek (http://www.mesalek.com/exits/index.html) has?
(though, to be fair, he doesn't have anything east of I-39...)

So far. I've only got it partially done at the moment, it will cover the whole state when it is done.
I spent the majority of this weekend getting some I-70 East backlog out of the way, and I didn't even know that this was THE Website Weekend!!!
Anyhoo, I just completed a 260-Mile stretch of Eastbound I-70 from UT to West Denver. it can be found at (Click There --->) http://www.flickr.com/photos/virtual_freeway_tours (http://www.flickr.com/photos/virtual_freeway_tours).
Proud to announce 793 photos left before the update. At the beginning of the "official" weekend, I still had nearly 300 photos to sort and about 500 to edit. I was at about 1160 photos when all was said and done. Let's see what I can crank out... and maybe I'll bring my laptop to DC for some extra productivity.
A little late to the game here, but I've announced Ohio and Maine road photo gallery additions through the course of Website Weekend. Perhaps we should have another one next month, provided that it avoids Christmahanukwanzaakah and Solstice.
Also, would it be a good idea to post future announced website weekend events to the forum calendar?
Not a bad idea, though they tend to be spontaneous so far :hmmm:
Let's have a Website Weekend, this weekend, starting now. How's that for spontaneous?
Given the weather, it's actually not a bad idea...
I should have an update up tonight around midnght. Productive day indeed. Good idea, Doug!
With the weather being what it is, this may well be a "website weekend" for me...
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Depending on how the snow falls tomorrow I may be able to escape and still make it a ROADS weekend instead...
[EDIT: No way. Gonna be a Website Weekend for sure. If I can get through Michigan I'm doing pretty well.]
Not I.
I've got too much to do before heading north for Pennsylvania next week.
However, I'll take my laptop and my memory cards and try and get caught up on images that have been sitting around since summer.
(And, finally get Alex the TN 840 West End pics he asked for ages ago.)
I wasn't originally going to be working on any website stuff over the weekend, but since I don't have much going on, I may as well get up to date somehow.
And I will be uploading Connecticut road photos to my Flickr account. If for whatever reason, I finish today and have more energy and gusto to go further, I will commence uploading Massachusetts road photos.
definitely not for me this weekend, up for family x-mas.
Next 2 weekends - if it snows (it's supposed to on the 24th and 25th.) otherwise its ROADS!
Due to a change of plans because of a sell-out for the Oswego-Plattsburgh hockey game at my alma mater on Saturday (A few friends and I who were planning to go didn't buy tickets in advance), my weekend plans are now suddenly free. Would anyone be interested in an impromptu website weekend this weekend?
^^^
I might be. The whether is supposed to suck here (snow and ice) and there's no football or racing. (Yes, there's the Pro Bowl, but that's not football. :sombrero:)

I still have a handful to post from my Christmas trip including an example of Button Copy and Clearview at the same exit on I-80 in PA!
But, mostly I have a big backlog of middle-TN pictures including TN 840 construction photos.
I got some photos to upload and more blog and site to write so I can go in on it. :sombrero:
Since I may be snowed in tomorrow - I'll probably start trying to go through Doug and other's keystones and who knows what. That may get sidetracked though in favor of looking up in more detail various TIGER Grant proposals.
I'll still be updating pages that I couldn't during the A-Plus "upgrade" and maybe finally finish the blog entry that has been sitting in the drafts folder.
It's snowing in the Bluegrass and I have already gotten one trip's worth of pics uploaded. Have been working on my Texas trip photos as well, but probably won't get them posted this weekend.
I've got 1,499 Ohio photos/videos ready to update... now it's a question of how fast I can write pages.
I've been working on uploading New York photos onto my Flickr account. I knew that I wouldn't be finished with that project over the weekend, but I've covered some good ground.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dougtone/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dougtone/)
I've gotten all the pictures from my current digital camera onto my computer and a fair portion of them uploaded to my flickr account.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mightyace/
I've added a new categories for street signs and funny signs.
With a virtual guarantee that I'll be snowed in at least until Monday, I'll probably be doing some updates this weekend, or at a minimum working on some hobby-related GIS projects...
It's raining, it's pouring, it's time for a website weekend! I'm going to see how many Ohio photos I can get through for the All Ohio 1500-photo update that should be coming soon.
Sunny skies down here...it's a tailgate weekend!
It's dodge the gaps in internets weekend for me :(
Well, if you see my recent post - this weekend was a huge success! 1,000 photos captioned and uploaded, update complete. Probably my last Website Weekend for a good long while.
It's another Website Weekend for me! I've sorted the last 650 photos in my next update, and now plowing through editing - hope to edit at least that many today. I'd like to get the Southern roads out before I have to start studying for my PE exam (as if I'm really going to study... but I know I should).
I'll be adding some road photos to my Flickr account tomorrow, from Pennsylvania and possibly elsewhere.
I'm close to getting photos from the latest trip ready - but I'm going to blog it as well.
My contributions to the latest installment of Website Weekend were the addition of numerous new photos to my Flickr account, from Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. Enjoy!

Very cool! I especially liked the photos of PA 452, PA 261, and PA 491, which are in my neck of the woods.
I'm going to be busy this weekend.
However, I may be taking some extended time off from work. Maybe I can get at the backlog of my photos then.
I'm storming through my South update this weekend, hoping to be able to update sometime next week. Maybe even Sunday? I just have Oklahoma left to go, 520 photos. I knocked off Alabama between yesterday and tonight, so just maybe I'll have something to announce shortly...
Oh, the weather outside is frightful. Really, it is, at least where I live. Therefore, I am declaring an impromptu Website Sunday for whomever wishes to participate.
nope, the weather here is really nice, so I'll probably be working on signs outdoors.
Today is fairly wet here. What a great day to put up Christmas lights! But to contribute correctly to this thread, I may finish uploading the DC photos I took this past Thanksgiving.
Fresh snow on the ground, good football on Sunday, all sorts of nasty colds going round, I declare this a fine Website Weekend to sit in, stay warm, and be productive!
I have six Billy Joel records I haven't spun yet, and a 10,000 photo backlog. As I edit new Maryland photos and pages for everyone, have a WEBSITE WEEKEND!
I will soon have a website weekend too as I caption and upload more photos to my gallery. I will also start designing a decent website and perhaps find better hosting.
I may have to declare a self induced website Sunday this weekend, since I'll be weathering a tropical storm. At least I plan on getting some photos up onto Flickr, both of the roads and non-roads variety.

I don't even know if I will have power this Sunday, but I have a lot of roads photos to upload (from the New Haven and Central NJ meets), so it should be fun.
I'll either be hunkered down somewhere in greater Boston or less hunkered somewhere in greater Scranton. One way or another, my Sunday will involve some form of productivity.
Sunday might be the day I upload all my New Hampshire photos to Flickr (if I have power or internet).
With up to 18" of snow forecast for the Northeast (depending on location and which model you hope to believe), it's a great weekend for hot cocoa, staying in pajamas... and working on a website!
Unless one's on duty...
It's always a great weekend to serve your country.

It's winter, and that means Website Weekend season! I've edited about 700 photos so far, and will have captioned at least 300 by the end of the day. So I'll start announcing these in December. Ideally, those of us with websites could get together, update together, eat, drink, watch football, etc. Anyone still maintain them? I'll accept Wikipedians only as a last resort.

Yes, I certainly do.
If I were local, I'd be interested. Plus I'd hate for someone to be desperate enough to include wikipedians :)
I've been putting all my stuff on Flickr, but I need to update my site pages to provide links to the newer Flickr pages and the EveryTrail GPS tracks.

The beauty of a Website Weekend is that it applies wherever you are. I just figure that a few of us CAN get together. There could be multiple meetups that weekend, in fact!
I have quite a backlog for exit lists to add to NYS Roads, so I could attend in spirit.
It's 100 degrees tomorrow. I don't want to even think of being outdoors. Anyone up for a climate controlled website day? Would love to get a small group in the NJ/NYC area as well as sympathizers from cooler parts of the country. Could even start tonight.

Well, they did used to recommend that server rooms be kept quite a bit cooler than other rooms.
Starting a Website Weekend right now. Hoping to push through some updated information this morning and get back to work on long-overdue New Zealand (7 years) in the afternoon. Trying to reignite the creative fire.
Edit: 2 hours in, updated clinched log through 2018 and updated NJ route histories.
I was hoping to post new Florida materials on Surewhynotnow this weekend but I've barely made a dent. Trouble is every time I sit down is when I get asked to do something or go somewhere. I'll probably be mostly working on updates Thursday/Friday due to fowl weather in Sierras making a trip to Yosemite not look promising. I still have to finish the FL 50 series before I can get to some monsters like I-4 and I-275.

Battle royale in Yosemite, my ace in the hole my snow chains.
Really I "think" that I can get everything done by the end of the week. I have about a dozen Bay Area Highways coming up the second week February if weather permits for good photos.
Powered through 4 blogs today; FL 50 Part 4, I-275, I-375/I-175 and FL 679/Pinellas Bay today. I had to switch my day off to Saturday so that probably doesn't bode well getting through some of the larger stuff I have remaining like I-4. I'm pretty confident I can finish up blog entries for the Courtney Campbell Causeway and FL 52 but familial obligations seem to have interjected. The weather in the Bay Area keeps switching by the day but 9 days out is difficult to predict.
