The Salt Lake Tribune reports:
http://www.sltrib.com/news/4295457-155/long-awaited-layton-hills-mall-interchange-rebuild

QuoteState Rep. Steve Handy says the No. 1 campaign issue for decades for all candidates in the Layton area was to improve the congested Interstate 15 interchange at Hill Field Road near Layton Hills Mall.

That long-awaited $38 million project – with an unconventional and somewhat controversial design – is now officially complete, and state and city officials celebrated with an on-site ceremony on Wednesday.

... It uses, in part, a "ThrU Turn," or "Michigan U-Turn," design that has been controversial. Similar designs at 12300 South at I-15 in Draper and at 5400 South and 4015 West in Kearns were blamed for killing nearby businesses by complicating access.

... On top of that, the new design incorporates a "single-point urban interchange" at I-15 and Hill Field Road.

Am I stupid or is it actually called a "Michigan U" instead of a "Michigan left" as I thought? I mean, the maneuver's objective is to turn left.
They put in what I believe was Arizona's first "Michigan Maneuver" in 2013 and added another a year ago, both around Tucson. Both are in heavy retail corridors. I hadn't noticed any business changes but I'll have to look into that.

You're lucky they even use the word "Michigan" when describing the maneuver. WSDOT calls the maneuver an "indirect left" (unless those are two different things -- I'm not totally certain).

There should be a description for this that doesn't use the word Michigan.  But yes, for those of us who are familiar, by describing it as Michigan we know exactly what you are referring to.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, some locals are confused and upset over the new Michigan lefts. KUTV reported on the situation today; the link includes a full video report with scenes of the area:

I can't tell how well it's signed, but given the urban density on that road, I think it would also confuse me:

When you come to a fork in the road... TAKE IT.
