Some nice views of from the top of the Old Ridge Route, hard to believe almost 700 curves in such a short span was acceptable for US Route:

Nice, interesting reading about how the place somehow managed to incorporate in the 1960s despite having less than 100 residents.

Considering the volume of stuff I added to Flickr so far I'll stick to the new stuff.   That being the case here are some of the good monochromes from the Bay Area and points beyond trip I just did.

I actually ended up taking about 900 photos on this trip, slowed me down on uploading old stuff to Flickr.  I have a solid library back to 2011, I'm somewhere in mid-2015 presently.

Max Rockatansky

Some new stuff from recent albums that I thought turned out well in B&W.

CA 198 over Peach Tree Valley/San Andreas Fault with the Gabilan Range, Salinas Valley, Santa Lucia Range, and Pacific Ocean all up ahead.  There was a weird Illuminati tag on one of the rocks that I thought made for a really nice effect.  I have a similar picture to this elsewhere but this was a wider pano shot that than one:

z10 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

The gate that blocks Old SSR 25/Lewis Creek Road from CA 198.  Granted I know Lewis Creek Road barely resembles a roadway anymore given has been abandoned for over half a century and was never paved in Monterey County:

Peach Tree Road dropping from two lanes down to a single lane:

A couple miles south on Peach Tree Road:

Peach Tree Road on the edge of Slack Canyon:

Indian Valley Road dropping elevation out of the Galiban Range:

An old windmill on Indian Valley Road.  For some reason I always thought windmills and farm equipment really stood out in B&W:

z22 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Long view down a stretch of single lane on Vineyard Canyon Road:

z45 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Single lane bridge over the San Andreas Fault on Parkfield-Coalinga Road:

z49 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Old single lane steel truss bridge on Cholame Road.  This one made a whole crap load of noise when I crossed it:

Partially flood part of Southside Drive in Yosemite Valley.  I like that the guide sign shields got picked up in the reflection of the water even in B&W:

Z16 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

El Portal Road with CA 120/140 shields.  There was a MUTCD compliant US 395 here last year and I have no idea what Happened to it:

Another El Portal Road with the Merced River visible:

CA 137 terminus at CA 43, one hell of a weirdly aligned highway:

Z5 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

A completely underrated gem of a road with MTN 296/Yokohol Valley Drive.  This is criminally underrated for scenic value:

J37, the only Signed County Route I know of in Tulare County which is "actually" signed crossing the North Fork Tule River on a 1927 era bridge:

Speaking of J37 shields:

Some original alignment photos of old SSR 198.  First in Tulare County on Road 228:

What's left of Avenue 340 which leads right up the Terminus Dam:

Z7 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

What was likely the original 1934 alignment of SSR 198 on West Lacey in downtown Hanford approaching Irwin Street.  Signage still directs you to East Lacey Blvd:

Finally getting around to posting some of the B&Ws from yesterday out in the Sierras.  We'll start with stuff on CA 198 east of the Terminus Dam.

-  Looking east above Lake Kaweah facing the 13,000 foot peaks of the Great Western Divide:

Z4 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

-  198 looking west over the Salt Creek bridge which dates back from the 1920s:

z5 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

-  The Pumpkin Hollow Bridge facing westbound over the Kaweah River, this one has a handy historic sign:

z8 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

The eastern terminus of CA 198 at the Generals Highway in Sequoia National Park with a new "End" placard:

z10 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

The Generals Highway really ends up popping in B&W, a lot of it looks like old Park Service photos.

-  What I assume is an older road deck underneath Tunnel Rock.  I've never been able to confirm on the NPS website but I'm fairly certain that this was a minor realignment of the Generals Highway:

z3 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

-  Along the Kaweah River at about 3,000 feet above sea facing Moro Rock and the Great Western Divide before the switch backs.  It would seem that the original Middle Fork Road actually followed the Kaweah River past Hospital Rock and took a much longer swing via Moro Creek to reach Amphitheater Point:

z5 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Facing Moro Rock from the switchbacks:

z7 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Amphitheater Point overlook with all the switch backs from the Kaweah River to Giant Forest in view.  I actually have a lot of decent photos from atop Moro Rock looking at the Generals Highway also:

z13 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

z15 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

A divide through the Redwood Sequoias entering the Giant Forest at about 6,500 feet above sea level:

z20 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Empty turn off for Moro Rock and the Giant Sequoia Museum, lots of snow from this point and above:

z21 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Max Rockatansky

Some more Generals Highway stuff starting with the Clover Creek Bridge:

z35 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Above 7,000 feet the road was basically a tunnel of snow:

z36 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

z37 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Not much fanfare in terms of signage between Sequoia National Park, the Giant Sequoia National Monument, and Kings Canyon National Park:

z42 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

The north end of the Generals Highway at Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park.  Really this isn't part of CA 180 although the signage and quality of the road bed is consistent with Caltrans standards:

z43 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Some stuff from CA 245 starting with the first reassurance sign southbound from CA 180 looking over a cliff face at just above 5,000 feet above sea level:

z3 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

That 31 miles of turns is no joke, really it is a couple hundred in fact:

z6 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

z7 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Really aside from Woodlake there isn't any communities on 245, part of it is actually in the Giant Sequoia National Monument:

z8 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

z11 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Max Rockatansky

More from 245 with the sign for Badger which essentially is now a ghost town.  There are some old abandoned buildings along 245 that are worth taking pictures but there was a Caltrans truck obscuring things that would have looked terrible in B&W:

z12 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

245 at the junction for Signed County Route J21 which of course isn't actually signed by Tulare County anymore:

z13 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Really isn't any "official" overlooks on 245 but there plenty of great views of the Sierra Foothills:

z14 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Even below 2,000 feet above sea level 245 still doesn't level out and stay straight:

z17 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

The Cottonwood Creek Bridge along with plaque showing it was completed in 1923:

z19 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

z20 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

The final drop to below 1,000 feet into San Joaquin Valley:

z21 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

245 is flat below 1,000 feet but still takes a ton of 45 and 90 degree turns in the farm lands:

z22 by Max Rockatansky, on Flickr

Speaking of 90 degree turns this was 245 on Avenue 380 facing east towards the Great Western Divide for about a mile before swinging south on Road 204:
