Serious question, asking from a Canadian perspective, is Memorial Day supposed to be "Happy", isn't the point of Memorial Day to honor those who have fallen in battle, moreso I assume its purpose is to be a somber day, like with Remembrance Day up here.

Usually, yes. It is considered to be the unofficial start of summer. (I say usually because of possible weather conflicts, like today.)

Well, I found indisputable evidence that in Maytown, PA, Alanland is invading and not invading.  I'll explain.

I help out at the local scout troop's sausage stand at the fair type deal that happens every year on Memorial Day in Maytown.  On the brick wall closest to the stand was the word Alan scrawled onto it.  Furthermore, there was a goat petting stand right nearby.

I was pleasantly surprised this afternoon to see two places where the flags had been lowered to half-mast, although I was disappointed that they had forgotten that at noon you raise them to full-mast. I was surprised that anyone had remembered it's customary to lower them at all on this day (as opposed to, say, September 11).

I like Memorial Day weekend because of auto racing (Indy 500, Coke 600), but also to salute the troops. Both of my grandfathers were World War II veterans and are buried in veterans' cemeteries - my mother's father, in fact, is buried at Gettysburg.

Funny, I'd list auto racing too, but I'd list the Monaco GP and Indianapolis, in that order.
