Just wondering: Wouldn't it be great if they put up signs at each end of the longest Interstate (I-90), showing the distance from Boston to Seattle? I know it's over 3,000 miles to the other end, but still...

IMHO, they should do that at the beginnings of all major interstates.  If there is no major city at the end of the interstate (I-20 at it's JCT with I-10), then use the last major control point.

So you know what I'm talking about! I feel the same way about major interstate highways showing mileage to the other end.

so they're finally updating old US-91 mileage?  wow - how long has the interstate, with its more direct route, been in place?  gotta be 30 years at least.
The one's in Nevada are worse.  In the 15 north in the Las Vegas Valley there is one that says Las Vegas 14  North Las Vegas 16  Salt Lake City  452.

That would be cool to see.

There's an "Omaha - 525" on I-80 just east of Laramie

Back to the I-80 Chicago Mileage: Iowa has several Chicago signs but I dont know how far but I recall over 200 near Iowa City.
Iowa uses 80 in Illinois not 88 which is 10 miles shorter to downtown.
I also remember the Joliet signs and the NYC sign in Ohio
There used at be a big display on the various turnpike options to the east coast cities at one of the ohiop Rest areas. Does anyone recall that one?

There used to be a mileage sign on the California/Oregon state border that had mileage to San Francisco in the 400's and Los Angeles in the 800's

There was a sign in 2006 (not sure if it is still there or not) on US 97 at the California/Oregon state border that had San Francisco somewhere in the 300's I believe. (but I just looked on Google maps and it looks like it has been replaced.)

I did not take this picture (I've never been to Australia, but would love to go). It's of a distance sign on the Eyre Highway. Of course, it's in kilometres, so the distance to Adelaide in miles is 1,234.

(Edited to add: Based on the distances, the sign is in Norseman, WA.)

Also in Australia, this sign is on the Barrier Hwy (NR32) heading west from Broken Hill, NSW.

The sign says that Perth, WA is 2800km (1740mi) away.

It's probably the peeling from the harsh desert sunlight-I reckon the sign itself is about 15-20 years old.

I think it is a piece of sheeting peeling at its edge, similar to the line starting under the last "e" in Adelaide.

Of those, specifically? Yes. There's one more of the Rocky Mount/Miami overheads just south of there at exit 50. There used to be others near the northern junxtion of I-295 that said Miami, but they were greened out and eventually replaced with Richmond Airport in its place. There are also more of the Durham/Atlanta ones.

In general, there are plenty of overheads with long-distance destinations but no mileage.

I think there may be a thread about that already, though I don't recall for sure and I don't want to search since I'm using my phone at the moment.

Really Los Angeles was signed all the way up from Oregon?  Do you have a picture?  Seems like Los Angeles was signed very far away, once from Salt Lake City, over 1,000 miles in New Mexico.

Couldn't find the LA one but here is the the Klamath Falls US 97 sign for San Francisco:

But those are novelty signs, whereas this one is legitimate.

Why is the Cove Fort sign on I-70 in MD a 'novelty sign'  It is the ultimate destination of I-70. If I remember right the sign lists Frederick (next City on I-70, St Louis (Major Midpoint city on I-70), Denver (last major city on I-70) and Cove Fort (end of I-70) I will admit there are days I want to just keep going west until I get there.

Why is the Cove Fort sign on I-70 in MD a 'novelty sign'
Because it doesn't follow the standard rules for control cities on distance signs.

it's not even accurate.  they rounded the last two distances (Denver and Cove Fort) to the nearest 100 miles.

You don't even have to do that. There are some instances on state highways where Oklahoma DOT was hard-pressed to come up with a control point for a route to fill a berth on a mileage sign...so they just went with "END OF ROUTE" and listed the mileage to that.

Similarly, there's a sign near Juneau that uses "End of Road 24," probably because there's nothing else to list.
